Something Cool about WindowsXP on an iO.

I've got parts hanging around to really get some use from my io, but I haven't had time to play with it again until just recently. I got a two device ide cable from badflash, and hooked up an old toshiba xm-1402b I found on the net nearly a year ago.

I loaded XP on the drive to see how speedy it'd (not) be, and I found that I can play audio cds, without any audio cable being hooked up.

The app doesn't matter; I tried the built-ins, and winamp.

All the devices are properly detected and activated with no problem too.
I only needed to load the win2k driver for my Linksys USB 802.11b network adapter, and I was good to go.

XP stays. :)

Next up:

1. Get a new bios with the usb & pci fixes, and CD boot.
2. Add a 2nd usb port.
3. Install PT6702.
4. Replace NOISY lasagna fan with blue orb.
5. Crank the AMD k6-III+ 500 ( currently running at 95x3.5 ) to 660.

Anyone know a good place to get a cable for the higher current delta power supply?
Right now I'm sharing the one with my epods' power brick.

I've seen them all over when I wasn't looking for one, but now that I actaully want one,
I can't remember where to get one. :)

Audio can be played across the data cable in WinME and Win2K as well. Possibly Win98, I don't remember.

There is a checkbox under the CDROM properties in Device Manager that allows you to "enable digital audio playback for this device" or some such.

Plex

Yes, but even this isn't necessary in XP. The box wasn't checked.
In fact, I checked it later, and it told me there were DMA errors when I checked it, and it asked if it could revert to analog playback.

Under 98SE at least, checking the box merely causes it to revert to being unchecked upon reboot, with no sound played.

The only thing I don't like about XP is it takes approx 67 minutes to install as an upgrade.

Ewwww!
Wouldn't know. As a matter of policy, I never do upgrade installs.
