Alternative Case for i-Opener

I believe that this has been reported before, but I think it is worth mentioning again.

TRCSX has been auctioning empty cases on eBay. IMHO, these cases would be perfect if you are looking for an alternative case for your i-Opener. The current actions are here and here. Obviously, the first auction is the better deal at $12.88 + $13.00 shipping.

I have purchased two systems that use these cases. They are very well made. There seems to be plenty of room for the guts of the i-Opener in the top part of the case. There is also plenty of room for a hard drive and a laptop cdrom drive in the upper portion. There is a mount for a laptop harddrive included. There seems to be plenty of room for a regular sized harddrive.

The base of the unit is designed for a standard floppy drive and a power supply. One may be able to fit a full size CD-ROM drive and power supply into the base. This would be a very tight fit so the drive and power supply whould have to be chosen carefully.

There is also one more of the complete systems available for action here. I have purchased two of these in a previous auction. This is an awesome deal. The motherboard (Advantech PC-5862) alone is worth twice+ the opening bid. One of the two systems that I recieved had a very nice VGA TFT display. The second had a VGA DSTN display which is on par with the i-Opener. The systems have on-board sound and ethernet. I was going to use it for a car based MP3 player, but it is almost too nice to hack apart.

I have no connection with TRCSX other than being a very happy customer. The machines were shipped promptly and were VERY well packaged (i.e. I got what I paid for in the shipping cost).

I will try to answer any questions about the cases or systems if you are interested.

I got one to create a cleaner mount for the Turbochip modification and power supply.

The case consist of two boxes. The front box fits on the outside of the rear box. The width of the front box is exacty the size of the i-opener still in it's case. The with of the rear box is slightly smaller. By notching the rear box's sides to wrap around the front lip of the i-opener case, the two halves come together and hold the i-opener firmly in the case. There's just enough room to mount a 12.5MM HD on the back of the i-opener (still in case). Power supply was mounted in the base.

Slotted the front box for the contrast, volume, power controls. Slightly off centered; but not too bad. The metal is soft; but it's fairly thick. Used a jigsaw and dremel tool to shape the holes.

Haven't decided how to bring out the parallel port and usb port yet.
