I've been using a serial -> infared receiver like the IRMan for about a year. It is currently in use for in-car I-Opener control, and it is very very cool... I rarely have to pull out the keyboard or mouse for normal operation.

I am using a remote control for Winamp control and visualization. I also use the remote with StreetFinder Deluxe to start/stop the GPS, scroll the map, zoom in and out. I can shut down windows with two keypresses on the remote.

IRAssistant is powerful IR control software, check it out at http://www.antenet.fi/irassistant/

Redwood asked > regarding Perfect's serial port.. does VCC, on CN12, hook to the VCC on the MAX chip?

My Short Answer is Yes. But I don't know what MAX chip you have or anything about your 3 volt GPS.

So for You to Answer Your own Question, Find the Data Sheet for your MAX chip & see if VCC is listed as 5 VDC

hi SF
ok, my garmin etrex gps ... only uses TX and RX ... http://home.cdsnet.net/~purple/projects/g45contr/ePlug/assembly.jpg shows the connections...
since I get power, Elsewere... the question IS.. do I Need to power VCC on CN12 .. in order to send power to my MAX chip? or, do the two lines I need, Work, running thru this chip without any power ? ( sorry, Clueless here..)
now, I would Love, to hookup all the lines necessary for a 'normal' com port.. (to use an IR remote... ) but, for Now, I'm willing to just get my GPS going..
I guess, I just Don't understand, why, in Perfect's drawing... there Isn't a line connecting VCC ... all the connected lines make sense to me, (well, mostly, :) ) thanks!

redwood, You are Scaring Me ! (but, I haven't fully understood everything I have done either)
Anyhow, Lines aren't drawn for grounds or supplies, to keep the drawing clean & easy to read.
The Max chip is an Active Component & must be Powered. You have Not read it's Datasheet.

From http://www.Dictionary.com to http://www.acronymfinder.com
VCC = Voltage at the Common Collector (positive [+] electrical connection)
