I got two laptop HDD off ebay for my I/O. The add neglected to mention bent and missing pins on both! Can proper gauge wire be inserted into the holes on the drives for the missing pins?

Bent pins can be straightened out with a pair of forceps. Some pins are usually not present, by design. These include the pins adjacent to signal pins 1 & 2, and pin 19 (20?). But these will be the least of your problems. Any HD that has experienced such abuse will also have a large number of bad sectors, if it runs at all.
