Lots of places seem to have the other orbs, but not the Orange, which would actually fit my K6-II+, without cutting the case.

I am running a lasagna on my K6-3+ and it is so quiet I can't hear it running. It is the 12 volt model sold at http://www.mpja.com/product.asp?product=12813+FN
I run it on 5 volts, K6-3+ at 300mhz, and it stays at room temp.

OK, so you still want an Orange Orb?

Please be aware that the Orange Orb is made for chipset cooling, not CPU. To mount it on a CPU would require thermal tape or epoxy.

I am looking for a cooling solution as well. I've seen many blue orbs but not an orange one. How does running the 12v fan on 5v affect it? Will it shorten its life or anything? Does it spin fast enough to cool the chip(rise266) good enough?

I have a 5V lasagna, and to me its LOUD!

The orange orb supposedly has more airflow, and also fits in the case without spacers or cutting, unlike the blue. The orange orb has more contact surface than the blue, and has beaten it in OC tests where beating is defined as either lower temp, or higher stable system speed.

I checked with the company that is at the above link for info on the orange vs blue orb. The guy I talked to said they are the very same thing! In fact the orange orb is only available in europe for some reason and if you order it from the website you will be sent a blue orb instead. They look very cool either way but I'm still not sure about how to connect and if it is a good idea to connect a 12v fan with three wires to the I/o. Anyone got some info on that?

I have a blue orb in my IO....

I honestly don't remember how I mounted the heatsink...probably used the thermal pad that was provided with the cooler. As for running the fan off of the IO power, I used the +5 and gnd from the serial port header (cut the connector off of my lasagne fan (too loud).

Cheers,

Rich

After, no lie, several hours on the web I think I have found the cheapest/best fan solution. http://www.mpja.com/product.asp?product=12853+FN This fan is 5v, in a metal housing so heat transfer from the chip to a plastic housing wont be a problem and it's $4! P.S. I'm trying to find 2 cheap laptop drives. 2-4 gigs would sufice. Any ideas?

Hi inx3us,
In post 2 on this thread Reverend_Jones pointed to the exact product you discovered and suggested (as you do) it is a good alternative... glad to see so much agreement if not as much thread reading

Ah, a closer read reveals the fan mentioned earlier is a slightly different model number than my post. The earlier mentioned fan is 12v with a three wire connector. The one in my post is 5v with a convenient two wire connector, perfect for the I/O

The fan/heatsink combo I suggested was a 12 volt Lasagna. The one Inx3us found is different. It is a smaller unit designed for cooling chipsets. Its a little smaller than I wanted to use.
