Do I have an F5 Key?
I need to get into safe mode on purpose

New MessageDo I have an F5 Key? (modified 0 times) cadetpc

Codeman, Starfish, CKBONE and others were very, very helpful last winter when a download of McAfee blew up my iOpener. It was brought back from the dead, even though I am not a tekkie. xxx

Well, my *%^%#! CPA just sent a virus to all his clients (of which I won't be one any longer.)

I'm supposed to go to McAfee.com for the fix. I can't subscribe(obviously--see above) but there *are* manual instructions. It calls for one to be in safe mode but it gets you there via the F5 key which I don't think the iOpener has. Do I have one? If so, which key is it? If not, how do I get into safe mode (on purpose)?

Thanks--this is really wreaking havoc. My AOL "sent mail" shows that I'm sending mail (mostly obscene) to all the spammers who have bothered me. Of course *I* didn't send them at all. This will cause me to very popular with some most unsavory characters. Most women won't share their age, but I will be 60 in a couple of weeks and this I don't need.

Thanks very much.

Actually...I think you hit F8 to get a startup menu in W98...then you can boot into the safe mode or to a DOS prompt, etc. If you have TweakUI installed, you can set Win98 to always show the boot menu. Where've you been?

Also if you boot up holding the control key it (win98) should boot to the menu.

My iOpener doesn't have any Function keys (unless they are the silly ones at the top which don't seem to work), so, CKBONE, I can't get to F5 or F8?

YouBecha, thanks, I will try that. Part of the "fix" when my iOpener crashed last winter is that I have to tap on two screens of b/w garbage before Windows 98 actually starts. I will try it on all three screens--but I don't know that I can "time" the moment before the actual Windows screen starts appearing. I have to go Christmas shopping this a.m. (you guys are probably at work) so I will let you know later.

CKBONE, if you are there, I'm still interested in knowing if there's a trick on the iOpener keyboard to get to those keys. Thanks.

the F# keys are located on the top of the I-Opener keyboard. I usually just count them off, but here is the list:<BR>
F1 = Back<BR>
F2 = Forward<BR>
F3 = Web Guide<BR>
F4 = Shop<BR>
F5 = Address Book<BR>
F6 = Mail<BR>
F7 = Weather<BR>
F8 = News <BR>
F9 = Chat<BR>
F10 = Print <BR>
F11 = Hang Up<BR>

The pizza key is the Windows key. It's the same as clicking on the start button.

Ragner1 and Deanbag1: V-e-r-y cool. BUT, I can't seem to attack/time the striking of the keys before the WINDOWS screen comes up. Short of a malfunction in my iOpener, is there any other way to purposely invoke Safe Mode?

Thanks very much.

Hi Lady,

You could just keep Tapping the Key 2 or 3 times a Second.
or My Favorite Way is Just to Power Down in the Middle of your Windows session.
normally that is enough to give you the Menu on reboot.

Good Luck, * StarFish *

Hi, Starfish!

What do you mean by power down--hit the power button and turn everything off? I do that occasionally when my screen gets hung (usually by AOL), but that never brings me up in safe mode.

BTW, I sent a pitiful message to Codeman asking him to do a post for me. I tried holding the CTL key and weird things happened. I ended up with a blank, bright blue screen. So I figured I had wiped out my iOpener again. This morning I turned it on, went away and did some things, and just left the blue screen there. A few minutes later, everything came up fine. How embarassing. ':-}

I still want to get rid of this virus (called GONER) but am chicken to do anything myself at the moment. What I am going to do is purchase McAfee (again), install it on my very old computer (Windows 95)and then see if, as a licensed user, I can go to their site on my Windows 98 iOpener and select the fix. I hate to buy McAfee because I like Norton a lot more.

Nice of all of you to respond. Thanks. I'll let you know if this works.

BTW, it would appear (with any luck) that this virus only affects e-mail and so far it has only affected one of my screennames. Apparently it is sends mail to everyone in MSOutlook. If that's the case, I may just drop that screenname. Of course, it's the one I use the most. Murphy's Law.

You Like NORTON, I like NORTON.
Let's give it a Try !
(You Don't need Safe Mode & the Removal Tool is FREE)

@ Local Compter shows, Norton System Works 2002 is $20
& it keeps itself updated !!!

Don't worry... The blank blue screen is a GOOD thing! That is scandisk checking your harddrive after an "ungraceful" shutdown. If you add the line: mode CO80 to the end of your autoexec.bat file, the entire blue screen will be visible while it does its magic. BTW, I've been told that the "home" key next to the poining disk is the f12 key; you've already found out the the top row are f1-f11.

Thanks, Spike and SF. I'm out early today to dentist, mall, etc. Will try both. Greatly appreciate Norton effort--esp. since I can't download. Wonderful. Will do the other modification too.

To *SF*: Thanks much for the link directly to the Goner virus--I'm impressed with your taking the time. I followed the prompts, put it in my download folder and tried to run it from Windows Explorer. I got an error message so I think I have to go to my other computer, print everything it said, and try again. I am going under the assumption that this bug is not violent/virulent so am not rushing to fix it since I am so busy doing other stuff at the moment. I hope I'm not wrong and will let you know when I try again (sometime this weekend). I guess the only thing it is doing is causing fake mail to go out in my name. I hate that but it's the price I pay for having this (wonderful) iOpener that can't handle the download of an anti-virus program.

And I am so glad to hear about the function keys. I sort of get sore wrists and will start using them. I'm going to stick little tabs on them.

I don't think this is a Hardware Problem.......
I Recomend You find someone to Rebuild Your Operating System.
I Suggest an Ad in the SwapMeet Section might Help.
Make a List of what You want installed, & include the CDs.
Win98se or WinMe
Norton System Works 2002
an Office Suite
Your Printer Driver
etc.
I would charge $100, If I was looking for WORK.
(maybe this will start a Bidding War,
& someone would do it Cheaper or be Local to You ?)

But as long as it does what you want of it,
You can wait until it crashes for good.

Good Luck ! * StarFish *

Dear Starfish and SF,

Eureka! Goner is a goner. When I tried SF's link I got an error message and gave up. Starfish, yours [which is probably the same destination](?)worked. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Starfish, you obviously have not started any kind of bidding war. Besides you've been so-o-o helpful all along, and since it's my birthday on the day after Christmas (terrible birthday) and I will be the big 6-0, are you SURE *you* won't take me on? I am patient. If not, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and all you great people.

You only see me here when I have problems because I don't have much to add except chatter, and that's not really the point. It would be nice if I could give instead of receive, but I just consider myself lucky to have one of these darling computers and this place to go.

Cadetpc,
If you're serious about formatting and re-installing, I'd do it for the price of a six pack and shipping both ways.

Dear Ragnar1,

Are you Santa Claus? and are you the least bit serious?

Where do you live? (I'm not sure it's legal to ship beer.) I'm in McLean, VA which is a suburb of DC.

I do think I need a re-install. I get thrown off AOL constantly, my system freezes up more than it should, and there is more software that I should have put on the first time and didn't, not the least of which is Norton Anti-Virus. To think that I have been running unprotected for almost a year. No wonder I have problems.

You weren't part of the saga last year when I bought McAfee and opted (by necessity) for the download. My computer couldn't handle it and I have about 40 printed pages of this BBS walking it (and me) back to life.

I did something really ignorant--I don't have enough RAM to download AOL 7.0 (you need 64) which I thought might solve my e-mail problems, so I deleted Access out of MSOffice 2000 since I don't use it. Memory and space aren't the same thing, are they? How embarrassing.

Cadetpc,
This is what I do for fun (at least one of the things). Yes I will do it for what I said. I live in North Alabama just outside Space Cadet City (otherwise know as Huntsville). I have some free time over the holidays so why not? What version of I-opener do you have? I have a V4b and a V5 right now. If yours is one of those versions, setting up your drive will be a snap. If not, don't worry, the cab files will be on the drive and when you hook up and boot up windows will look for the necessary drivers and load them. Contact me at (EndorphinJunkie AT earthlink.net) A six pack of TECATE is about $6. The cost of shipping round trip would surely be less than $10. So, if you feel that you can trust me, let me know.

Thanks, SF--did you find all that chatter from last winter? I did install the DeskJet 420 and the printer's not working properly--it did just fine until I had to put in a new cartridge. I must have screwed up. :-}

Starfish--message follows. Thanks!
