user needs help with disabled I-Opener

I'm an internet appliance (I-Opener) user. The stuff you guys write is over my head. I figure if there is any help for me I'll find it here. AT&T is terminating support for the I-Opener as of 12-31-2001. I have received an e-mail directing me to Earthlink.
My I-Opener 2001 (dated 8-28-2000 from HSN) does not have the "change your ISP" option in my help menu. Earthlink told me, Netpliance is no longer reprogramming this option into the I-Opener. The Earthlink tech said only about 25% of the I-Openers coming over from AT&T have this option. The techs at Earthlink are telling those without it to throw their I-Openers in the trash. I need to get this option added to my I-Opener so I can use it again.

Can anyone help?

If no one has figured out how to copy this option from an I-Opener with it to one without, I'm going to need someone to hack this I-Opener for me or trade for a used notebook.

post here or get my e-mail from my profile.

First you will need an image of the operating system that allows you to change your isp. But you will have to hack your machine just to change it. Short of buying a machine that allows you to change it, you are out of luck. If you don't want to hack it, there are plenty of people on this board who will buy it. Or try eBay. There are people on this board who will help you hack it, but the bios chip, cable, and hard drive, will cost you between $50~$150, depending on if you buy a new or used hard drive. Ol la.

I'm hopeing to find someone with an I-Opener having the ISP option or find a software hacker who is familiar with the programming used in the I-Opener. Altering the software will be the best fix for me. Can't give up yet. This I-Opener is used by my dad (78) and was perfect just the way it was.

Your input is most appreciated. Thank you Ragnar1

Good luck to you.

I say this to start because almost every sandisk image in the I-Opener community is based off the original hacked V1, which did not have this feature.

The only alternate isp capable v1 images actually using the default I-Opener browser had to be hacked using the QNX command-line for a specific phone number and ISP login, and if most of this is over your head, doing that might be difficult indeed.

But at least you're looking in the right direction.

Seeing as the service is shutting down support, you may get lucky, and happen upon a fellow disconnected owner with the upgrade.

Stranger things have been known to happen. =)

TOSK, I have an I/O with the ISP option. I'll trade ya if you can find out what version you have and make sure there is NO epoxy on the BIOS. I do not want to deal with that mess! LMK
ps I have two and am in the middle of the hack on the first one, if it's not the one w/ISP option were good.

inx3us: Would you be willing to create a dolly image of your SanDisk and place it in a Yahoo briefcase? It should be possible to reflash the SanDisk of machines that don't have the ISP option with this image. I know of at least one person that was trying to do this. However, I don't think that he ever obtained the image with the ISP option (i.e. the one that you could create).

My IO came from HSN. The box sticker is dated 2000/08/28 In side: CPU Rise MP 266 2.8V core 3.3v 2x100mhz. No epoxy on bios. All pins on IDE intact. It has the sw4 dip switch. The spot were the Yamaha chip goes has never been used. I don't know who made the display screen. There are no security Torex. This IO has only had the case opened one time, just a few days ago when I took it back from my dad. I is in excellent condition. Complete with original box and packing. I think it is a v5. What do you say it is? Can you tell me which ones have the ISP option? Which one do you have? Will it work the same as mine did once I get it online?

Hey TOSK. I would say you have V5 except for the fact that you have no TORX screws. It might be a V4b or V5a or something like that. Can you e-mail jack@badflash.com and give him all your specs and ask him if the V5 bios chip that he sells will work in what you have. I have that chip so I want to make sure I can hack your I/O.
I have a V5 and as far as I know it works just like all the others except for the option of entering your ISP (usually Earthlink) number and password.

inx3us I pulled one of the four screws that mount the base to the IO. These were the only screws that I remembered being different. Looking down into that hole they looked like Allen headed screws, which I assumed had been the standard mounting hardware until the TORX were introduced. I had removed them with a small blade screwdriver without any trouble and never gave them another thought. I put on my glasses an got a lens. They are six pointed star with a raised stud in the middle. I'm sorry about the confusion.

GLITCH, If you would be interested in doing some research to make sure the Sandisk can be re-flashed I'd be up for it. As far as
TOSK is concerned, If you dont wanna go thru the hassle of re-flashing We can still trade I/Os. I think having an image that would give people the option of keeping their I/Os "stock" and use them on the web is a good idea though. By the way just to make sure you cant change ISPs the path is (From the I/O start screen)

I need an I-Opener I can plug in and turn on. I don't know what creating a dolly image of the Sandisk will do to your I-Opener or it's programming. I do think Glitch has a great idea. It's what I was looking for when I found this web site - some way to add the ISP option to an I-Opener.

A trade for your I-Opener is the best possible solution to my problem. If I can send my I-Opener to you or someone else and get the ISP option added, It should be about the same thing. But, I don't want my I-Opener toasted, leaving me with nothing to work with. If you or anyone else can help, let me know.

In my preferences all I get is a list of AT&T numbers.

inx3us: AFAIK, flashing the SanDisk is pretty straightforward. I've extracted images of a virgin SanDisk by booting DOS from a harddrive. I then used dolly to create an image of the SanDisk. A similar procedure could be used to flash a newer image to the SanDisk.

Of course, you have to have the necessary hacking "tools" to be able to do this. These would consist of a BIOS that could boot from the hard drive, a i-Opener hard drive cable, and a hard drive. You mentioned that you were hacking another i-Opener. Hopefully you have all the "tools".

I can dig up a copy of Dolly if you don't already have one.

It seems like the majority of the people are either using the machines unmodified or have hacked the machine and blown away the original SanDisk image. Either way, the v5 SanDisk image with the changeable ISP settings seems to be hard to find.

TOSK: I believe that Randy ("ePods Randy") was the one that came up with this idea. I agree, it is a good idea.

Ok. I will need a copy of DOLLY. Not to kill this thread, just pause it for a bit... I am not getting my laptop drives till after X-mas. I've got everything else I'll need.
TOSK I'll trade I/o's with ya after I get the Sandisk Image off mine. It wont be till after the new year though. Or we'll just be able to flash your Sandisk and you can keep your I/O.

inx3us: I put a copy of dolly.zip in the Dolly folder here.

To create an image file of the SanDisk, enter the following from a true DOS prompt (not a DOS window in Win9X).

dolly hd129: image_name.img

Where image_name.img is what you want to name the image file.

I will send you my I-Opener when I get contact information. I expect you will be wanting to test the SanDisk image by transferring it to another I-Opener. You might as well use mine. If not, just send me yours. In any case make it easy on yourself. My dad and I really appreciate what your doing.

Wishing all a Marry Christmas. TOSK

Happy New Year! thread. I'm still a couple weeks away from having time to make an image of the selectable ISP Sandisk. I'll monitor this thread to see if there still is interest in this. Bye for now.

Gang,
A copy of the selectable isp sandisk image is on it's way to Glitch. That one is made using a copy of Drive Image 1.0. I'm not sure if it compatible with dolly. I finally got dolly to work yesterday. I will make and send Glitch a copy on a cd today or tomorrow. I tried sending it as an email attachment last night, but my service for whatever reason could'nt handle it. I am on a land line modem. Cheers, all!

Ragnar1, any chance you could send me a copy of that selectable ISP image?
I'm working with one of the Earthink Tech Support people to try and provide the service for folks at a reasonable charge. I'd sure appreciate it.
