I-Opener and XP Problem
Lockups at Initial Loading of XP

I'm trying to setup XP on my I-Opener, I've used a 2.5" 6.4GB Toshiba drive with a 2.5"-3.5" adapter and installed XP on my own system, then when I swap it in, XP gets as far as the 1st progress bar, the black and white one with vertical bars, it gets to the end of that and stops completely, nothing else happens. Could anyone point me to what the problems could be? I installed a 256MB SO-DIMM in there but I know it's not the problem because it does the same with the default 32MB SO-DIMM, a 64 and a 128.

Format, and use 9x to sys your drive, then copy the XP CD and any extra drivers you use to the 6.4GB Toshiba. Now run setup from the Toshiba drive after it's installed in the I-Opener.

I have tried the suggestions posted here to install XP with no luck. I put the drive in a desktop system, booted the XP Pro CD, formated the drive with NTFS (also tried fat32), copied the entire XP to the drive, then installed the drive back into the IO. The setup says it can't be run is DOS. There is no other program to install (someone posted there was a winnt.exe, nope).

I tried again, stopping after first reboot of the XP install, took the drive to the IO. It starts to boot up then freezes on the progess bar.

Any ideas? I next step is to install win98, then upgrade to XP (but I would rather not).

Thanks.

XP does install over 98SE perfectly, so maybe this would help. And runs pretty well too! I'm on an IO v1 with 128 mb ram and a 10 gig IBM drive

One little thing to remember, though, if you are installing XP overtop another WinBlows OS.

I know this may seem common sense, but I'll post anyway: make damn certain you uninstall OS-intensive things like Norton Utilities 2000 and such, which have a firm hand 'round the cojones of your OS. In my fervor to try out XP on my desktop, I pulled a Homer and forgot. It was like putting a prom dress on a pig, same amount of heads/limbs but not really a good fit (and where *does* the tail go?). You can theoretically uninstall XP and go back to your previous OS, then uninstall all pesky interlopers, then reinstall XP, *then* of course all your new XP device drivers.

That's if it lets you; mine did not, and I had to reformat the drive (though XP does offer you that lovely NTFS).

And of course, if you installed any software since installing XP, *especially* XP-specific software (Tweak XP comes to mind), you'll do well to uninstall them BEFORE you uninstall XP, so you can then go back to your original OS...simply, it's gotta be easier to do it right the first time.

Okay, let's say I start with an unformatted drive.
What are the exact steps?
I know I start with putting the drive in a desktop machine that has a CD.

Thanks for the help.

Do I format using NTFS?
If I have to install Win98 first, do I need all the IO divers loaded before I upgrade to WinXP Pro?
I don't want a dual boot OS, all I wnat is WinXP running.

Thanks again.

"Do I format using NTFS?"

No, 98 doesn't support NTFS

"If I have to install Win98 first, do I need all the IO divers loaded before I upgrade to WinXP Pro?"

Since all you're doing is using it as a steping stone, no. In fact installing the IO drivers on 98 might cause some problems in upgrading. Do a minimum install only, no addition programs or drivers.

"I don't want a dual boot OS, all I want is WinXP running."

There's an option in the setup to save the previous OS, choose no.

1. Using a 2.5" to desktop drive adapter, with the 2.5" drive set up as master in a desktop system.
2. Booting from Win98 bootable floppy, from DOS prompt run fdisk to partition & format the drive. Reboot.
3. From DOS prompt run sys.com to make the 2.5" HD bootable.
4. Copy the WinXP CD's "i386" folder the the 2.5" HD.
5. Copy the "smartdrv.exe" file from a Win98/ME machine to the 2.5" HD.
6. If the desktop machine can boot from the 2.5" HD, then the drive can be put in the IOpener.
7. Boot the IO to DOS prompt. Type "smartdrv.exe", Enter. Then "CD\i386", Enter, "winnt.exe", Enter.

When I tried installing XP on my version 5 iop, setup informed me that my cpu was a complete and total piece of crap ;) and that it could not finish install. By the way it is a Rise 266 but not for long. Make sure your cpu is supported by XP.

wait a sec if you have a v5 and a rise chip this means you cant install xp at all? or is this just your case?

Yes I believe this is the case. I recieved a message stating that XP required a certain instruction set that this processor did not have. "Installation Halted". Sounds like Rise and XP are definitely not compatible!

If I'm not mistaken, all the K62, K6+'s and pentium mmx(200+)cpus are compatible with XP. I personally have ordered a 266 pentium mmx mobile processor to try in my iop. Will be here 3/13 so I will be posting the results probably that evening. Computer Geeks has these processors (21.00)and supposed to be a socket 7 format. They also require only 1.9 volts to operate which should be a big help to the iop. I don't know if the Winchip is compatible with XP or not.

WinXP won't install if the MHz speed is less than 266. Whether this can be over-ridden: don't know of any method.

OK here are the results if anyone is interested. Installed pentium 266mmx notebook low voltage processor. Bios sees it as a Tillamook 200mmx. Improvement over the Rise 266. Took the notebook hard drive and installed Windows ME on my desktop and then installed it into the iop. I tried the way oldman suggested and could not get it to boot but I'm sure it was my inability to figure it out . Installed drivers for the usb network adapter while it was still on the desktop. Transferred drive to the iop and let it run. After installation was complete I loaded the video and sound drivers through the network. After video and sound I then copied my XP disk to the hard drive of the iop. Had some problems with the usb nework adapter not seeing the other computer but finally did see it and transferred the XP files. I created a folder on the desktop of the iop called XP and put the files there. All I had to do from there was click on setup and choose the upgrade option and let it go! Took over 2.5 hrs to fully load the operating system. Everything works. Had no problems with the network seeing the other computers after upgrading. My opinin is that XP does cure the usb problems on the iop. The reason I installed XP after ME is that I wanted to see if there were gonna be any overheating or lockup problems from extended usage. The iop ran from 9:00am est to 1:00 pm est non stop transferring files and loading OS's. No lockups or overheating. I would however like to increase the processor speed if possible. I tried changing the switches but no matter what I did the processor stayed at 200 mhz.

Did anyone ever figure out a solution to the original problem in this thread? I'm having the same problem and I haven't found a way to get past it. I have tried doing an update over win98 but the installer gives me an error saying that it can't build a list of the files needing to be copied every time, then I reboot and get an missing NTLOADER error. I've tried running setup from Dos with smartdrv.exe, and using my desktop to do the install and pulling the drive out after the first reboot.

MY system reboots automatically every time after the first (white dotted) progress bar.

Can anyone help me get XP on my machine???

My V3 with a AMD450 did the same thing until I lowered the cpu to 300 mhz. Would not install at any higher speed.

I've done an XP install two times on a V4b, K62+450@200mhz, 128meg ram, and 256 ram. Both installs were done dual-booting W98 and XP. Couple of crashes during the install, but rebooting continued the install where it left off. No problems at all on the second install.

I also did an upgrade from ME to XP on an I-Opener (V2) with a p200mmx. No problems there either. I've never attempted a clean install...don't know if it's possible on an I-Opener.

For anyone else having these problems, here are a few steps to try. Also be sure that you use xcopy to copy over the XP cd so that you get all the subdirectories as well. The folder with the files HAS to be named I386 as well otherwise you will get an error stating that setup cannot create a list of the files to be copied. I made this mistake.

For those experiencing the rebooting loop: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q282296&GSSNB=1

If after rebooting it tells you NTLDR is missing: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?id=kb;en-us;Q314057

To use xcopy(included on most 98 boot disks) to copy the XP cd to your hard drive type:
xcopy D:\i386 C:\i386 /e

Be sure to load smartdrv.exe before copying the files.
