Do a search for r_fl_z, or serial ports...Yes the I-opener can succesfully be used for emulation! Badflash sells the serial board mod to give the I-o two serial ports, and the Sandisk can be programmed with emu software.

I have even heard that the GCT's can be used too :)

One of these days I am going to get another Webplayer and with K-Ray's serial port pinouts; get two work RS232 ports on it too.

(GCT and Webplayers have wireless keyboards so you can stash the keyboard away when not in use)

FYI, in addition to the dual serial board, r_fl_z also did a nice emu board which incorporated the smart card programmer and emu card in a BS switchable iOemu package...complete with an internal smart card slot on the side of the iO. It uses an RJ45 shielded cable, and works with BS and NON BS H cards. The sandisk holds the image, as well as a copy of File Maven (a freeware Laplink workalike) for parallel port software updates. The whole thing sits on top of your video stack with only a 1" frontal profile. No fan, floppy, or hard drive required. What more could you want? I don't think it was mass produced, but the proto unit I saw was WAAAYYY cool.

Hey, I remember back when I used to correspond with r_fl_z about the emulation hack...Does he have any pictures of that mod around?

Hi,

Is there another way to incorporate 2 serial ports into the I-Opener besides going the Badflash serial board route? I already have the MAX chips and I was thinking of going through Badflash, but at $20 to $45 US plus shipping for the board it's pushing things into the pricey range for me since I can get a complete Pentium 166 system for $37 US. I'd really like to get my I-Opener running SLE or Pitou, but this is the only limitation so far.

Any help appreciated!
Thanks,
dawson

Gwizah:
I talked to r_fl_z, and he said he will try to find time to post some images of the iOemu soon. He's a busy boy, but I'll pester him till he does it :)
He is building one for me, so if he doesn't get to the post, then I will.

You could try etching your own board using Prefect's RS232 diagram, but unless you already have the materials to hand, it would be cheaper to purchase the bare board from Jack at Badflash.

He said he's not run it with Pitou yet, SLE only, but the linux install should work with it just fine. I have the Pitou boot disk creation package. I'll give it a shot when I get my iOemu.

I was wondering about emulation with the Gateway connected touchpad. Is it feasible to create a bootable CF cardimage of SLE or pitou and get it to boot from there? The thing is just collecting dust here on my table.

Thanks Kudzu for the reply. I should think Pitou would run fine on the I-opener. I have the 162.02 release operating on a Pentium 133 with 16 megs without a glitch. Mypitou.com and xtreme-emu.com both have the 162.02 version if anyone's interested in trying it out.

GWIZAH - I have had good luck with SLE on the GCT, I took a GCT that had a bad IDE header (someone messed up the solder pads trying to remove a header that was badly soldered on) but boots fine to DOS on the CF and I removed the USB and RG11 ports so that the Badflash RS232 board would fit in place of the modem, then made a 10pin cable to connect the Com2 port.

I added Badflash's card to another GCT with out mounting it in place of the modem and taking out the USB/RG11 ports by making a connecter cable to the modem com1 header.

I cut out the RF shield and plastic back so that the the CF card can be removed with taking the whole unit apart, I have a USB CF reader on my main desktop to make necessary changes to SLE on CF card. Works really good but I do plan on install a switch to turn the LCD off when it's not needed, I plan to tap the display power where it connects to the mainboard next to the speaker.

I have pictures, I will try to get them up to my website later today...

In case anyone is interested, I am thinking about selling my complete working setup (includes everything!) which uses a GCT with the Badflash RS232 board in it. The GCT has a damaged IDE header so attaching a hard drive is out of the question for this, the USB and RG11 ports have been removed to make room for the the RS232 board. Also, I installed a power switch to turn the LCD on and off while the unit is running and a section of the back panel has been removed to allow easy access to the CF card for "updates" and a special "Emu System" square case sticker has been added to the front. I will throw in a IDE to CF drive too.

Email me for details

I am willing to let this complete working setup go pretty cheap
