Car auto boot using modem ring resume ... ideas?
Any ideas on how to get the I-Opener to auto boot and shut down?

Greetings everyone,

I have email Badflash.com on how to use the "Modem Ring Resume" in the Award BIOS, they had no idea. I tried the set the modem in the bios to IRQ 4 (COM2) and then tried shutting down the PC. My understanding is that if I tied the RI on COM2 to 5V (which is IRQ4) the PC should boot up. It didn't, what am I doing wrong. I would like to set my I-Opener in my car and I will write software that will watch the parallel port for the ignition to shut off then the PC will shut down. Then I would like the PC to boot when I turn on the ignition. The important thing is that I want Win98 to properly shut down.

Any Ideas on how to use the "Modem Ring Resume?"

Pat

The modem ring resume, as well as the other 'resume on...' features, enables an already booted system to resume from standby or other power saving mode. It will not power up the system.

I dont mind waking from stand by mode, but how do I electronicly make a "ring" on the COM RI pin to wake the system. For example is it just 5V to the RI pin?

Thanks,
Pat

For testing purposes, you might want to look in Simtel (www.simtel.net) for utilities that display a modem's blinking lights.
At least you'll be able to have visual feedback on whether or not the PC "sees" the RING signal you're trying to simulate.

It's probably just take a short-burst of 5 volts on the RI pin to generate a RING signal.

Here is what I did, I set the BIOS to boot when seeing power. I connected my power to the ignition power. I installed 98lite so I never have to shut down. Now when I start my car my I-Opener boots in about 45sec. When I leave I just shut the power off. My OS is on its own partition, the swap is on the second, and the MP3 are on the third partition. This should work but if the OS get corrupt I made an immage I can make a quick reload and I am on my way.

The goal would be to then have a relay on the main power that would delay for a 30sec. Then I would hook the ignition to the serial/parallel port and write software that would shut down the pc when the line detects a low. We can all dream that we have an unlimited supply of time for every project imaginable. ;)

Cheers

Another Option, Wire Power Supply Direct to the Battery.
If You can enable Hibernation, say in 2 hours, the I-Opener would shut itself down.
Resume from Hibernation was about the same as Bootup time for me.
The I-Opener can kill my car battery in 24 hours, if left on.

Good idea, but I agree that the i-opener will run down the battery, I don't think it will be as quick as 24 hours. Anywho, I don't want worry about if I may be in my car in the next 24 or so hours.

Cheers

I had done it a few times. I thought it would last longer.
I have the best/biggest battery, my WalMart sells.
Hibernation Mode Shuts off the I-Opener, even if I don't.
This allows me to use a full normal operating system install.
It's nice to have a full office suite, & wireless keyboard,
even if most times I only play mp3s. with ethernet in the garage,
it is very easy to move documents in or out as well as music.
I never thought I would have a full computer & Jukebox in my car, so easy
I hope your experience is as Great as mine has been, * StarFish *

Just a thought...

Why not just hack a mini-keyboard that has the Suspend button, and plug this keyboard into the IOpener? It should be trivial to tap into the keyboard's suspend-button switch. Once that's done, a simple circuit could be made to momentarily close the suspend-button's switch when the AC circuit loses power.

With this setup, the IOpener can be constantly connected to the car's battery The keyboard hack will auto-suspend the machine when you turn the car off; and since you've already got the BIOS to start when it sees power, the machine will auto-resume when you turn the car on. About the only downside is the extra wires running into the modified keyboard.
