Post here any good deals you find which may benefit fellow hackers. The previous two threads got too long....most of the deals don't last very long anyway.

Two good deals at Best Buy....

Visioneer scanner, One touch, 8820 USB. Great device, scans reflectives, slides, negatives, 5x7 and 4x5 transparencies. Very easy to use, supports XP, comes with PhotoshopLE, Paperport 7.0. $99..no rebates involved.

Buslink 24x CDRW, USB 2.0. Will work on your I-Opener at the slower 1.1 specs. Should burn ok if you use XP. This also comes with a 2.0 5-port pci card for your main computer. Great deal....$129 after rebate.

Here's a good deal on an 8.1gig IBM Travekstar drive. Comes in a pcmcia external case. You could probably adapt this case for your I-Opener as an external IDE hard drive. CompGeeks $77.

Hi,
Not sure if this qualifies, but Dell has been running on and off 20% off with free shipping on Dell branded products. Recently I ordered a Dell 120GB drive, a WD1200JB arrived to fill the order, price with no sales tax and free shipping was $188. This is an OEM drive (bare, no cables, software or documentation). However it is fully a WD branded product (no Dell only WD markings), it's a 120GB drive with 8MB of cache spinning at 7200rpm.

Ahh now to install then back to my video editing learning curve..............

Only bad thing is the handling fee for orders under $50 CDN (which isn't too bad since it's only about $30 US).

Thanks ckbone for the heads up on the external 8.1gb IBM Pcmcia drive!
Got mine today. Nice unit! Original unopened Ibm brown box. Very pleased with the order from CompGeeks!
Came with drive mirroring and rio port software.
A NEW 6GB Ibm oem BARE drive here sells for $99 from Harddrives NW.

Price at Compgeeks has dropped down to $68. I think I'll order a couple more and sell them at work!
That will pay for mine.

A good deal for those wanting to add a gameport to their IO or other USB capable device:

The Wingman GamePad Extreme is on clearance at Office Depot for $11.16.

The WGE features G-Force tilt to allow you to dodge in the direction you tilt the pad, and comes with a separate Gameport-USB adapter.

Not a bad deal, considering that the adapter itself usually runs $15.

Office Depot is apparently closing out of their portable MP3 players and selling the display units, I bought a Iomega HipZip drive that had almost everythig includig two clik!(pocketZip) disks, the USB cable was missing which I bought for $25 (usb cable has a special end and available from iomega for $17)

They had others too, dlink mp3 player that had nothing but the unit it'self for $25 and a Nomad II which uses smart media cards (regular $299 marked down to $79.95)

The Iomega unit didn't work at first, it just displayed "invalid disk" so I took it apart and found the ribbon cable to the click! drive un-attached. After I put it back togather it all works, it has re-chargable batterys that I am concerned about holding a charge but they appear to be standard NiCad rechargable ones so I can alway replace them later.

This might also start me in dumpster diving, the manager told me that if the other units didn't sell this weekend they most likly would be thrown away! I checked out their dumpster, it's surrounded by a 12' chain link fenced in pen which going over might be trespassing.... I might check with my neighbor who is a cop and see what his thoughts are (knowing him, he might drive the get away car!)

For those here who live in the Seattle area,

Radar Electric surplus (downtown by the space needle) Upstairs part of building, has large clear plastic "Grab Bags" of different small parts and small hand tools for $4.95. The hand tools are "GB" brand but they are good enough for home use. The same pliers sell for about $15 each at Eagle/Lowes hardware.
I've bought 7 or 8 bags and ended up with many fairly nice needle nose and linemans pliers, wire cutters and strippers.
also the bags contain LOTS of panduit and velcro wire ties and misc other stuff. Some bags have 2 or 3 sets of these GB hand tools in each bag and others have none! So one has to visually inspect each bags contents carefully.

I also picked up an all I could grab handfull of those red button clear plastic low voltage crip type weatherproof gell filled telephone wire splices for about $2.

There is a lot of other neat stuff down there to include metric screws for the i-Openers case and mobo. I bought a bag of about 50 for under $4

PS they will be moving to another location soon, so I kinda expect to see a lot of clearance stuff coming up.

The Crucial SODIMM at Best Buy is a PC133. I have a V4 IO with a Rise CPU running Win98. It does not have the DIP switches on the motherboard and I never hacked it beyond adding the hard disk and fan. As I recall, it uses a PC100 SODIMM. Does anyone know if I can just drop in a PC133 and expect it to work at the slower rate?

All memory can run at a slower speed. You just cannot overclock memory like CPU's.

Well you actually can overclock memory by raising the FSB speed. A program such as SoftFSB (by h. Oda) can do just that. You can confirm the increase in performance using a program like SiSoft Sandra.

Techbargains has posted an interesting July 4th special. Comp USA will be offering a FREE After Rebate Hi-Val External 4X4X6 USB CD-RW (287440) with the $29.99 purchase of a BELKIN ten foot USB cable (190766). NOTE: the link says the cable is only $24.99, and that is what I paid today. Buy it early and have the price adjusted. You also may want to try and price match the cable just to see how low is low. Of course you may want to get the photo copies of your receipt before trying the price match in case the rebate form has a dollar value catch to it. Techbargains also mention that CompUSA will be offering a similar deal on a scanner and a DVD player.

Here's a Radio Shack freebie, from our old friends at Cue.

Cat.#: 26-1276 (Picture)

Cue Wireless Audio Link

Wireless Audio-Link
(26-1276) Features

Your Wireless Audio-Link consists of a transmitter and a receiver. The
transmitter modulates (by FM) the audio signal from your TV or VCR and
transmits it to the AC power line. The receiver couples the modulated
signal from the AC power line and sends the demodulated audio to your
computer's sound card (through the computer's Line In jack).

These units are simple to install and easy to relocate. Because the signal
is transmitted using household AC power lines, no additional wiring is
required.

3-Channel Operation - lets you select from three different
frequencies to eliminate interference.

3-Phase AC System - lets you use the product on a 3-phase AC
Compatibility system.

VOX (Voice Activated - lets the transmitter send a signal only when
Transmit) there is sound output from the TV or VCR.

6-Foot RCA Cable with - consists of an RCA plug with a piggyback RCA
Piggyback Jack jack. The RCA plug connects the transmitter's
analog audio input to the TV or VCR's Audio
Out. The piggyback jack is a spare connector,
so you can connect the TV or VCR's Audio Out
to another device.

Your wireless transmitter and receiver are ETL listed and meet all
applicable FCC standards.

IMPORTANT: This product is designed for indoor use.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire or shock hazard, do not expose this
product to rain or moisture.

CAUTION: To reduce the risk of electric shock, do not remove cover or
back. No user serviceable parts inside. Refer servicing to
qualified personnel.

I haven't removed the shield. It does not look like there is room under it for a Mini pci card. To shallow and not long enough. More than likely it has a smaller daughterboard assembly. I'm comparing size with a mini pci modem from one of the Toshiba notebooks.

Best Data GeForce4 MX420 AGP w/64MB SDRAM and TV out $69.99 in store - $20 MIR at Fry's.

This is based on the NV17, so it's not as good as the NV25-based GeForce4 Ti cards. Nevertheless, it has stunning 2D performance in Linux/Windows as well as hardware support for DVD playback, so it's good value in comparison to the previous value leader, the GeForce2 MX series.

I pulled out my aging GeForce classic and put this card in - it worked perfectly in Mandrake Linux 8.1 with the old NVidia XFree86/OpenGL RPMs with no changes at all. It looks brighter and crisper, and 2D acceleration is noticeably quicker. Slight drop in contrast and color saturation, but nothing alarming. I'll keep it going for a week or two to test its stability - the old GeForce just finished a 4-month run without the slightest hiccup. The MX420 has no fan, so it's quieter in comparison to the old GeForce, which had a fan.

Did some DVD playback with Ogle and Xine under Linux, and it worked fine, but with no noticeable difference in comparison to the old GeForce.

Tested Freecell in Windows, and the 2D-accelerated finish was the fastest I've ever seen, with the cards being whisked away in under 0.1 seconds (faster than the blink of the eye).

the following: NETGEAR USB Ethernet adapter model EA101 for $19.99 Cdn dollars. Which in US dollars is bloody near free!!It's limited to 10meg/sec but the 1.1 USB socket on the I-opener and your ISP wouldn't go that fast anyway. The Koss Hip Hues portable DVD player is on clearance at Target for $49.99. At the store I went to, only the magenta/blue checkered unit was on clearance, but YMMV. The best looking one is the plain silver, but that was not on sale. Kuroshin has a discussion of this unit.

http://www.kuro5hin.org/story/2002/6/4/22123/09063

Basically, it looks like a Sony discman, but plays DVDs/VCDs/SVCDs/MP3 and even JPEGs burned onto a CDR. Has Coax Video out, SVideo out, optical digital out, and various other outputs. Includes an AC adapter and a remote. The DC input is 12v, so it's ideal for car and camping use. You'll still need a portable TV or LCD panel with composite video in. Apparently, it can be made region-free and macrovision-disabled with a firmware upgrade.

the Koss Hip Hues dvd player is a nice machine.

i hooked my InterAct Playstation Mobile Monitor to it to make a personal DVD player.

the remote has a bunch of function i did not expect to see on a machine like this.

it can play regular audio cd's and cdrw, but the instructions do not mention svcd.

i put analog video on a cdrw in mpeg1 (basically a vcd written to a cdrw) and it played that. as far as i know, a regular dvd player cannot play cdrw or cdr.

i have been looking for a sony video watchman for a couple of years, but my setup beats that.

have fun,

I got a fairly good deal on a stick of PNY 512MB PC133 for $39.94 today at Staples.
The guy in front of me in line actually did it first ...
He brought in a printed Webpage ad from Buy.com advertising the above PNY for $47.01
I tuned in on his price MATCH request...
After his transaction was complete He paid $47.01 plus tax!

I asked him if he was done with his printed page and he gave it to me. I then SMILED at the cashier and manager! I would like to take you up on the ADVERTISED PRICE GUARANTEE policy.... After a bit of my clairifying their POSTED price guarantee policy of 110% of the difference to them,

Walked out with it paying a total of $39.94

The current staples price is $149.98 Ouch!

RATS, I bought the last stick...

That's not all...

They handed me a printed $50.00 mail in rebate coupon!

Hmmm, I get PAID $11.06 AMIR and a free 512MB Stick ???

I think they will plug this up soon...

O2U2,

You lucky son of a gun!

Tried this in my local Staples (Norco, CA) and didn't quite get the same experience.

The Price match should also take into account the next day shipping from Buy.com ($11.34) for this item (making it $58.35).

For me the 110% price match made it $53.00 out the door (CA sales tax incl).

Still, the rebate is valid ($50 back) so for only $3, I can't complain

Norco Staples has two units left as of 1pm today.

Cheers,

Craptastic. Buy.com PNY 256 sodimm for $31
If I remember correctly, this is the same that is sold at Circuit City for at least $60. (Guess who just sent in their receipt for their puny $15 off $70 rebate. ) Remember that you need 8chips/side for 256 to show up correctly on an IO.

Oldman, is there a deal on the Interact playstation mobile monitor? Will any of the PS/one LCD displays available at Target and elsewhere accept composite video in?

I also made an interesting find: the Koss Hip Hues is about the only MP3 player around that can play back MP3s recorded on DVD+RW. There seems to be no other unit all the way to $1000+ with this capability (PCs can do it, of course). Not bad for a $49.99 unit.

linuxguru:

i got my interact playstation mobile monitor about a year ago. the one i got was a return to Best Buy. this was after a posting on this bbs about them. it is a great little tft color lcd with cigarett lighter plug for under $100. i do not know if there are any available anymore. i have not seen any at Best Buy in a while.

the koss hiphues is a great little machine. it runs off a 12 volt wall transformer. with the mobile monitor connected, it can be used in a car.

any playstation mobile type monitor should be capable of composite video with little hardware mod because the playstation has composite video and stereo audio output.

i originally got the interact unit to use with a camcorder that had no lcd viewer.
now i am getting into burning vcd's on cdrw to play on the combination of the Koss and Interact.

still having fun,

Hey I scored on some kool surplus "Intermec" sealed HEAVY DUTY BLACK mini keyboards at Vetco in Bellevue for $9.95 ea.
These appear to be new! VERY durable sealed rubberized keypads that remind me of military "Field keyboards"
Don't expect a lot of fast typing but they are great for mobile/automotive use such as entering street info for GPS,etc...
They get some other kool stuff from time to time but it also moves FAST!
These list for $575.00 http://www.wavonline.com/ProductFamily.asp?family=252
Intermec Part# 340-046-003
Has an 8' cord with mini din (ps-2)

Rite-aid brick and mortar. The store folks really don't have a clue either!
Have to look around a bit...

It's a rather kool little unit. Modular boards as you can see in the photos. Not a perfect picture but for $50 what can one expect?

With a little inginuity one could increase the range mounting the reciever on a dss dish.

Walmart has the HP P100 Photosmart printer on sale for $98.86. This is the portable printer you can hold in one hand. It also allows you to print directly from your CompactFlash, Smartmedia, Memory Stick. You are limited to 4 x 6 prints only. This is the lowest price I've seen for a new one.

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=1841468&cat=37807&type=1&dept=3944&path=0%3A3944%3A3946%3A5425%3A4470

Review:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,5026,00.asp

The good: Its not a refurb; Its cheap; It has gotten rave reviews; It doesn't need a PC to print; Its portable.

The not so good: It only prints 4 x 6; Its slow (3 min per print); Its an older model that's been replaced by the p130; and, Like all photo printers, it can be expensive to print.

I intend to use it Christmas day to print photos on the spot for the family. Now I need a good cheap supply of Ink and paper.

I always post here first!

Yup! $49.99 for a 2.4ghz wireless surveillance set.

I was playing around with it earlier today using my Toshiba notebook as a display. Was a little bit impressed with it.

Using a Belkin USB videobus I found dumpster diving for the video interface.

Ran the camera and transmitter off of a single 9V battery for about an hour and half, Still was going strong when I turned it off to go do other things. Range is short.

Again the picture quality is so-so compared to my hardwired home surveillance system.

Kool toy otherwise!

Yup!

The device is usually is located on the end cap of a display isle if the store clerk can't locate it. Quantity of 2 to 3 per store typically.

I got an entirely different one from C-usa for $119+ tax. Cool little self contained unit, but same poor picture quality...most stores have discontinued them.

Good deal on one of the fastest processors available to run on iopener. SurplusComputers ( http://www.softwareandstuff.com/index.html ) has the AMD K6-II+ 550Mhz CPU for $44.95 (SKU CPM10091). They are also selling a package of Norton software (SKU PromoSWW11080) including Systemworks Pro 2002, Systemworks 2002, and Personal Firewall 2002 for $30, IF your order is for $40 or more. There are Norton rebates (must be postmarked by 1/31/03) totaling $60 in package, along with old versions of McAfee to qualify for upgrade rebates. My total with $9 shipping was $83.95. Less the $60 rebates, that's $23.95 plus stamps for the CPU and a pile of software. Software includes two copies of Norton Antivirus 2002 and one of Norton Ghost 2002, along with other Norton software.
