Basic question--help!
Basic question about dialing in

Hi. This is a very basic question--couldn't find an answer to it.

I have an unmodded I-Opener, and I want to use it check email and get on the web.

Is there any way to log in to my ISP and into my e-mail account? Can I change the phone number it dials into, and make it send my username and password?

Thanks for your help.

Yup you can do all that. But how you go about it depends on what version of the i-opener you have. If you have a version #1 the instructions are in the old BBS archives. The archives are not visable unless you are signed in. If you have one of the last of the version #5 then from what I've read herein, what you are trying to do should be an option that you can access after bootup (I do not have a V5 so this is hearsay). For every version in between I believe you will need to flash the BIOS and/or update the sandisk. There was a thread not to long ago that addressed this very subject, but I can't find it at the moment.

It seems that the standard answer for this type of question is: "Read the threads and use the search feature".

There *is* a great deal of useful info in this BBS, put its presentation is wanting!
I'd like to see more "How-To" type tutorials, that newbies can read in a linear fashion.

That said, it is important to know if your i-op had ever been in "regular use".
I.e., did it ever connect to the netpliance servers. If it did, it would get updated with software. If not, it might not have all the software you might need to do basic ISP and email. And, if it did not, it never will, as those servers are long gone.

Anyway, boot the puppy up, without a phone line attached. Goto the help link, and preferences link. You should see a link for ISP settings.

This BBS is rich on content for hacking the unit to run non-stock operating systems and applications. However, it is weak on content about what you can do with the i-op without fundamental modifications. But, I don't know of any site which focuses on the latter.

I was just thinking the same thing about the information here. I've been searching for some info myself, and it does get kind of hard. When you find it, you still don't know if it's out dated or not.
It would be really nice, if the added a forum area, for "completed hacks". For example, the USB, once the hack is figured out, a single thread "USB Hack (pr something)" containing the step by step instructions. One thread for each of the hacks. Then each fo the threads would contain any updates since this is a ongoing process (such as the Q-16 info).

If somebody could present the finalized information to me, I'd write the threads. Just an idea.

OK, I will Play. (as will Others, I Hope)
Since my ISP moved me to @Home, right before it went Down,
They have Not been able to provide webspace, but they say they are Working on it,
Yea, right ( NOT ! )
My Old Pages I am Not Happy with, http://yourpage.blazenet.net/starfish/hacking.htm

You are writing a FAQ ???

Do You have the First Post ???

Just start Here, in this Thread.
After You get it going, You can Move it to a Reference Area.
In the End, WE Want a Web Page so We can include Photos.
as We get Good Web Pages Up, I think We can get Codeman to Host them.

I would suggest using an Outline Processor (WordPerfect is Nice}

Where do You Start ? "Getting an I-Opener" or "Opening It Up" ???

What is Your First Question ?

I'll take the grumpy old man up on that, and we'll see who can be the grumpier.

I'm fairly new to hacking this thing, I got started about two years ago, and thought it had bouoght the farm so I stopped. Checking it just before trashing it indicated that it was OK. So I'm back at it.

Orginally, I had thought about getting a moderated forum (read only) for the postings (or just an area to post messages). But if you want a seperate web, we can go that way. I can host it to start with, getting it setup and pictures and stuff (it would have to have pictures I guess, you are right about that).

As far are where to start? Since I'm starting again, I should be some help there.
1) Let's start with obtaining them, since I just had a post about that.
2) Then how about things Not to do unless that does not apply, I remember there was a big thing about not turnning it on when I started two years ago.
3)Identification if it means anything (is any model identification needed?)
4)a summary of what's needed, what you can do (processor etc..., audio, USB).
5) maybe some specs such as processor,

Originally, I had thought about getting a moderated forum (read only) for the postings (or just an area to post messages). But if you want a separate web, we can go that way. I can host it to start with, getting it setup and pictures and stuff (it would have to have pictures I guess, you are right about that).

4)a summary of what's needed, what you can do (processor, audio, USB, etc...).
5) maybe some specs such as processor, memory type.

That should be enough to start with. Since I've got a new unit, I can start taking pictures. It would be nice if all the pictures were in the same format type, so I'll take pics as I move along.

Since I'm laid up with a bad back, I've got time to work on it. But mind you, I'm not a professional writer or anything, just another hack wanting to present the information in a more concise form for others. Also have a nice digital camera with macro lenses, so I can get in there to show detail.

I really didn't think anybody would take me up on it, but I'm motivated now. Shoot me an email so we can get together on a more timely level and get to know each other a little more. And shoot me what info you have to get started with. If somebody else if going to be hosting the end product, we'll keep it pretty generic.

This can take a while. Creating drawings and converting to JPG etc... Up to it?

Thanks for the answers to my original question.
I'm completely new at this--I don't know which version I have. It doesn't offer a setup screen, has a female voice, one of the screens says "2001"--don't know that I want to open it up--maybe I'll just try and get rid of it.

There are some pitfalls with the anyisp image. You can't setup the e-mail account, so the one floating around has ragnar's account on it. You can use any isp you want. I have no personally tried it with a V3. In order to do the hack you need to be able to boot from a drive, and that requires removal of the bios chip. The link given above has the info for swapping sandisk images.
