Help for a newbie!

I just received an I-Opener from a friend of mine. I'm going to hack it, but have a few questions.

1) Do you have to upgrade the BIOS to boot a HD?
2) The screws that hold the base to the system are very strange, where can I get a tool to remove them?
3) I'm guessing that I need some sort of a kit (44 pin IDE cable, 2.5-3.5 converter cable (to install OS), slim cpu cooling fan. Can I buy all of this together, or do I have to do it separately?

I'm starting late in the game too, perhaps we can help each other. The search function on here is invaluable, as many of the web sites are no longer up.

>1) Do you have to upgrade the BIOS to boot a HD?
As far as I know, yes.

>2) The screws that hold the base to the system are very strange, where can I get a tool to remove them?
Those are torx #7 I believe. Just find a small enough flat head and wedge it in, came right out for me.
After getting those off you need to figure out which rev Iopener you have. (You have at least a v3b.) I believe Rise CPU chips are v4, and non-yamaha audio chips are v5. If its a V5, you have to extract the bios chip and replace it/flash it externally. Badflash sells drop-in replacements.

Jack's shop at http://www.badflash.com has lots of stuff for this. http://shop.store.yahoo.com/cablesonline/44pinlapinri.html also has the hdd cable and the 3.5/2.5 adapter. Their hdd selection is poor though.

If you want help/links, drop me an email at kverne at vestus dot com .

Thanks for the help Vestus!

I've managed to get my unit open, now how can I tell what version it is?

It's got a Rise 266 CPU, CyberBlade/Trident chip, and a VIA chip. I don't see any Yamaha chip.

Probably a v4 or likely a v5, though the yamaha chip is hard to read. (V5 you have to buy Badflash's chip to use a k6 replacement chip. Might as well save on shipping and get the ide cable and 40/44 pin converter while you're at it.)

I'll be taking the slow/cheap route first. Hdd and Ram, then look into a cpu. (BestBuy has cheapo 128 sodimms for $29 before a $20 mail in rebate.) I dont find k6-III+ 450s around, but pricewatch did list a place that sells k6-IIIs (currently only 333)
If you're looking to do the cpu work, Datel has dc/dc/ converters http://store.datel.com/cgi-bin/datel.storefront/3da33bbb01d3b1f0271d26aabf0206b0/Catalog/1065 for $20-30, depending on voltage.
5v-1.8v $29, 5v-2v $19.

Keep searching here for info. It takes a bit of digging, but lots of people went through the work before us.

Badflash: Does the converter you stock work only to add a 3.5" drive to an IO or can you add the 2.5" drive to your pc?
