What IO version I have????

New MessageWhat IO version I have???? (modified 0 times) patcat88

Okay, I looked at a list of the various IO revisions and saw that a 3b must have torx screw which mine doesn't.This is what I know:

-No torx screws.
-Rear plastic grey plate cover has following on it.

FOXCONN
EAIA1001027
REV : 3B
DATE : 2000 . 01 . 27

-SW3 is filled
-SW2 is empty
-SW1 is empty
-YAMAHA audio chip
- grey case, not black

So do I have a 3b or a 1?
Also this unit was faithfully connected to Netplience from day 1 till august 16, 2002 (by the previous owner, 8-16-02 is when the news was updated last before, I had it updated by connecting it to the web via PPP ISP.) It has the PPP interface and can be programed by going into help-preferences-isp settings. I managed to get to the post screen by doing some ctrl-something-something (can't remeber since in 8 seconds I went over every possable combo on the IO keyboard.

So will any of the QNX root hacks work?
Do I need to do a BIOS flashing?
Do I need to get a BIOS from badflash (currently I only need to do the HDD hack, then the CPU hack, but CPU is 2 months away if everything goes right (dc-to-dc and k6-2+)?
256MB RAM is being detected to 256 by BIOS in POST screen but QNX ain't using it.

Also the unit has a c6-200 Winchip and the heatsink isn't indented.

with the winchip, it is either a v1, v2, or v3. if the bios chip (u25 above the power connector) has epoxy glue on it, you have a version 3. if no epoxy, you have a v1 or v2.

if you have a v1 or v2, a properly installed hard drive will be recognized (bootable with o.s.; cmos set to auto, auto; and boot device set to 'c'). you do not need to change the bios.

the only drop-in cpu upgrade for the winchip cpu is another winchip. a upgrade cpu with socket adapter and fan such as from Evergreen may work, but you may need to cut the case for the fan to stick out.

No expoxy. To be exact, how do you tell the difference between a V1 and V2?

Also I'am planning on a intergrated USB hub and 2nd USB port (to be feed through hub first), USB ethernet, K6-2+ 450, DC-to DC convertor, IDE CDROM, USB LS-120 for floppy, and maybe water cooling so I can get to 600 MHZ.

there is not much difference between a v1 & v2.

the first thing to try is attach a bootable hard drive. note that pin 1 on the ide header is actually pin 2 so you need a custom 2 1/2", 44 conductor ide ribbon cable with the wires reversed. use 'search' to find how to make your own or buy one from badflash.

what o.s. are you goung to use? I hope you are not going to stay with qnx. you will need to find drivers for the VIA chipset, Trident display controller, Yamaha sound and ActionTec modem that will work with your o.s. if you intend to run windoze, email me your snail mail address and i will send the drivers to you on cd.

are you a technician? can you solder surface mount well? since you know about dc-to-dc, you have probably read those threads. with the right voltages on the right cpu and software speed control, water cooling is not necessary for 600mhz.

search for the thread for implementing the second usb port with hardware.

for the cdrom, try to get a Toshiba or Teac, preferably Toshiba because the ide header on Teac can short out easily. unless you want to load your o.s. from the cdrom, you may consider a usb or parallel port cdrom. then you can disconnect it when not needed.

have fun,

I have the same one. No epoxy on the CPU either. I bought mine already hacked so it came with a 6.4 GB hard Drive and it is running an AMD K62/ 300 processor. It is a good system, but I would like to upgrade the LCD and the processor to a faster one. I had an AMD K62 450, but the core cracked when I tried to remove the HS from it. I tested it first in the system, but it still said it was a 300. I am using the "a" version wild pencil bios (?)

for 600mhz you need realy just 4 things. first thing is the VMOD to your iopener. second thing is a GOOD dc-dc, 3rd/4th are a deep back case and a k6-2+\550\500. Trying to over clock a k6-3 is not as easy due to them only ranging upto 450mhz. With a deep back case you can add a REALLY good heat synk. I'd suggest one of the thin fin heat synks that has a zillion fins all in parallel. You will also want to port the exoast some how.

Is there anyway I could get the drivers from you for Windows 98 SE? I tired XP but it locked up on me during the initial boot and caused a BSOD. I don't need them on CD unless that is the only way you can get them. I do have a web/FTP that I can host this stuff from as well.

Thanks,

Askalon

badflash has posted links to the drivers in the first thread in 'i-opener technical info reference' for 2-14.

i offered them to patcat88 when some of them had disappeared from this board.

i like the older '4in1425a.zip' better than the newest via drivers.

i always put each driver in it's own folder, unzipped, and all of the windoze installation files in their own folder on a HD bootable to a "C\" prompt.

on startup, go into the cmos setup (ctrl+alt+esc) and set the HD parameters to 'auto' and 'auto and shut off the irq for the display controller, then do the windoze setup.

after you setup windoze, install the via chipset drivers. go into the windoze control panel, system and set the hard disk controller to 'only primary channel enabled'

then install the trident display driver and go into windoze control panel, display, and set the screen resolution to 800X600.

next is the sound driver. if you have a version 4 or earlier I-o, use the correct yamaha driver for win98se, if you have a version 5, the older via sound driver '68mu200a.zip' works better than the newest.

the actiontek external call waiting modem driver 'cwmdn170.exe' is correct.

that takes care of the tricky stuff.

have fun,

oldman
