A useful list of ideas for possible uses for an I-Opener in your car

Uses for an I-Opener in your car:
1. MP3 Player
2. Detailed GPS
3. Store Shopping Lists
4. Wireless Web Browser
5. Data Recorder (explained below)
6. Night vision while driving using IR USB cameras.

Explanation of data recorder:
You could setup a usb camera pointing out the front of your car, then one pointing out the back of you car. That'll give you extra vision. You can record these images, which would be great evidence if you were in an accident. You can place proximity sensors at each corner of the car, and plot distances to objects in real time graphically on the computer, so you know how far you are away from objects (great for parking, if you suck).

Ideas for getting information into your car:
Ok, so you have your I-Opener in there, now how do you get stuff onto it?

1.You can set up a wireless hub in your garage so when you pull in, you can sync to your home computer (like a pda).
2. Wireless hub in your garage so you can download shopping lists and MP3's onto your I-Opener
3. Wireless hub so you can download a Trip Tic onto your car, so your GPS can help you find your way to your vacation spot.

Ideas for displaying your desktop during the day/night:
1. Have the I-Opener on it's original stand, velcroed to the floor (so it doesn't move, and you can take it out easily)
2. Mount the I-Opener to the roof, so it swings down like a visor.
3. For Night: Come up with a HUD (heads up display) idea, using a see-through LCD panel that'll display everything in red (less bright). It'll be placed before the windshield right in front of the driver. The driver will be able to look directly through it, or focus on it to see the displayed data. This would be handy for a night vision hookup. You could output the IR Camera data to the HUD, so the objects shown on the screen match up with the actual road.
4. For Night: Get an LCD projector, mount it under the hood pointing out the front of the grill of the car. Your desktop could be projected onto the road 10 feet infront of your car. Everything would have to be weather proofed, and vibration dampeners added.

Ideas for inputting data.
1. Set the keyboard on the passenger seat (duh)
2. Get a Twiddler
3. Voice recognition.
4. Turn all those blank accessory slots into data entry points. Ie: keybads, switches, buttons, etc...
5. Touch screen LCD panel

Car automation ideas:
1. If you have powered seats and mirrors, you can hook up the I-Opener into your electrical system, and let it re-adjust your mirrors, seat, etc... after another driver has messed with everything. Personal settings. (Some cars already come equipped with this)
2. Auto iginition. Press a button on a remote keypad and the computer will unlock your doors and get your car ready to drive. The computer can sense if the temp. is under 32 degrees F, and defrost the windows automatically, get the heat going, and possibly start the windshild wipers. If it's hot out, the computer can adjust the air conditioning, and roll down windows. Climate control.
3. Don't try this at home idea: Set up a sensor array to detect the white or yellow (depends what state) line painted on the road. You can make automatic pilot this way. The computer will keep the car X feet away from the strip, and using proximity sensors, speed up or slow down the car, if it senses a slower, or faster object ahead. This idea is only practical for long highway driving or interstate roads (no stoplights). Possibly take the idea of one of those small line-following robots, and adapt it.

Well, those are my ideas that i have come up with as I've been using my I-Opener in the car. Some I have implemented, and others are on the list. Before performing the car modifications, make sure it is legal in your state first.

I would like input on my ideas, and if someone has other ideas to add, please do!

You should consider the higher cost of insurance, since while fiddling around with the iopener you won't see that car that just stopped in front of you!! :)

Seriously however, I used a GPS on one of my iopeners and found the display to be almost useless during the day and completely distracting at night. After one hot 95 degree summer afternoon the unit died so I took it all out; the iopener just can't take the rigors of temp change that often occur in an automobile. This is just my take on it, perhaps your experence will be better.

I agree with BigDog,

Practically useless in bright daylight, Wide swings in temperatures places too much thermal stress on the fragile Mobo and components.

Or won't see that pedestrian...

You're both right. The I-Opener has many short comings, including the screen washout during the day, and very annoying at night. Like I have said before, they were merely ideas, and still could be adapted to even another computer setup. Perhaps pushing the voice commands & recognition would be a good idea. I haven't yet put GPS on the I-Opener yet, but i've had it on a laptop in the car before. It seemed to work well, but that was in the back seat.

Always remember to practice safe-driving techniques while behind the wheel . Don't blame me for anything stupid you do. <--There's my disclaimer!

the best thing to use an i-o for in a car is DON'T.

the i-o is too clumsy and fragile to use in a car.

there are only two things an i-o is good for: what it was designed for and to hack.

as you read this board, you will find many stories of people spending much time and money to see what they can get an i-o to do. it is not actually using an i-o for anything productive, it is just the fun of hacking it.

have fun,

I beg to differ. I've had my I-Opener in the car since I bought it (has it been two years already?!) and it's still running strong. It's survived Miami summers and a winter in North Carolina.

It's mounted low to the ground, so the screen doesn't look too bad during the day. One serial port drives the GPS, and the other drives an infared receiver (all my apps (StreetFinder, Winamp, and preset keys/events (ESC, Enter, Shutdown) are controlled via infared remote). Using the TL082 audio-out hack works great with Winamp.

USB 802.11b adapter lets me load up MP3s and other software without running a cable out to the car. I have a touchpad-style mouse and backlit industrial keyboard for those times when mouse/keyboard input are required (but only while I'm stopped!)

Yeah, I even mounted a USB webcam at the front of the vehicle briefly for ####s and giggles. If you remove that red plastic filter on the front, it does pretty well in low-light conditions.

I'm a bonehead when it comes to reading maps or figuring out where I am, but with the GPS, not once have I gotten lost, including during a road trip from Miami, FL to NY, and just hopping on an unknown country road here in NC...

Well...I hate to post this...knowing the flaming that I'm about to get.

I have been using my V2/IO in my car for almost 3 years now. Delorme Street Atlas Deluxe USA/Delorme GPS/Win98. 10G HD/128M RAM/Oringinal WinChip/USB to Com adapter (for the GPS). BIOS hack and HD add are the only mods done. (Now for the flame stuff). I have been running the IO off the auto 12V. Actually use a lighter plug that I attached an end to. To date...no issues... Boots up 100% of the time. Runs great.

(Before you ask), the IO actually runs on 12VDC. Every computer runs on 12VDC. This 12 volts is buffered in the motherboard (as it is on every computer) with capacitors/resistors/whatever. The computer actually reduces the 12VDC to 5VDC/2VDC for use elsewhere in the system. The 19VDC that the AC adapter uses is for...well I have never seen the reason for the 19VDC. Some laptops use odd voltages, but this is to recharge their batteries. Anyway, that's my speach to the 12VDC can't be used crowd. If I still need to be flamed...then fine, but 3 years of experience backs me up.

I have mounted the IO on a JottoDesk. Swings to the left of the radio. Easy to glance down at to get GPS information. Swings over to in front of the radio when someone in the car.

Live in DFW, TX...and I have used the IO in both freezing temps (about 20F) and Texas summers (above 105F). I always let the car run (heat up or cool off) a bit before starting it...but that's the thing I do to it.

Anyway, if there is any interest, I could post some pics...

Re: Jeff102410

Thanks for the support. I'm obviously not the only one that has attempted some new things with the I-Opener, and I'm glad to hear that yours is still kicking. I'd like to see some pictures of the mount that you have setup in your car if that's possible.

Jeff,

That 12v supply might actually be a helpful bit of information. If the IO supply system can compensate for a 12v supply, now anyone with a dead supply need not hunt for a 18v one, and can just get a 12v one. What are you using for an interface in the car? Touchpad or something? How is the GPS hooked in?

On the interface, I'm using an X10 wireless remote that has a PC mouse function...well here it is...http://www.x10.com/products/x10_mk19a.htm. I got the remote free when I ordered some other X10 stuff. The mouse part works great (thumb moves mouse and finger clicks). Since it is RF, I can pretty much point it anywhere and it works. Also, the power button on the remote is programmable, so that I can turn the unit off with one button, not having to go to the start menu. I also keep a 84-key keyboard in the glove box (just fits) in case I want to type some (like my destination address)...but I don't use it very much.

On the GPS, I have a USB to COM adapter. It shows up as COM4:. I pointed the DeLorme GPS software to use COM4: and it just started working.

I put the car in the shop...usual maintenance stuff. I should get it back in a day or so, and I'll put up some pics.

One more thing on the GPS, it takes 4 AA batteries. The unit is only on when the computer is on (I think) but I knew I would not want to change batteries all the time. More imporantly, Murphy's Law would dictate that the GPS batteries would fail when I'm showing the unit so someone, so I decided to play it safe. Got a Radio Shack variable 12V adapter, cut the end off, and soldered the wires to the GPS unit. Made a small notch in the GPS unit for the wire, and mounted it on the dash with some velcro. We have state inspection/registration stickers on the lower left of the windshield, so I put the unit under the stickers. Does not show up as much as I thought. Pics should better show what I tried to explain here.
