Connecting HDD & DVD questions

Hi,

I have a project where I could use I-Opener. Before buying it I have a couple of questions:

All I want to do is to run a custom made IDE cable from I-Opener to an external box where I have a DVD (set to master) and a 80GB HDD (set to slave) and access to both devices using I-Opener for copying files from DVD to HDD. By the way the HDD is formatted FAT32 and no OS is installed on it. So my question is can I do this by just making a custom cable wihtout any OS changes on I-Opener? Can I-Opener access these drives right out of the box or does it need some modifications? So far all threads on the discussions are about installing a Windows or Linux OS using HDD.

Thanks.
Yaydo

Hi,

The I-Opener only supports 2 IDE devices at a time. The built in "disk" that holds the QNX OS that the I-opener ships with is on one of them , so if you plan running 2 drives as you described you'll have to install an OS on the hard-drive and boot from it.
I've not messed with QNX too much, but I doubt you'd find DVD ripping software for it.
Modwise, to start with you're best going to badflash.com and ordering the relevant IDE cable and BIOS from him, the basic mods to get the machine going aren't too bad, it's all screwdriver work

Before getting to involved in this, bear in mind that the I-Opener isn't exactly the fastest machine around, I wouldn't like to guess at how long it'll take to rip a DVD, and you can forget playing one back on it, the screen sucks.

Have Fun,

MrKemak

The V540a bios will boot from a properly formatted IDE CD. The CD/DVD must be able to bump the sandisk off the IDE chain. Some can do this, some can't. One never knows. It is possible with a custom cable to boot off a CD and setup a hard drive with an OS. For external drives you must provide an external power supply.

I'm with MrKemak about ripping DVD's. I have a K6III+ running at 400Mhz and it takes days to rip anything. I have another system with a 1.4G athlon with 512M DDR266 and it takes several hours.
