oy! im probly spitting out an old thread, but maybe this is a quickie for most. here goes: i got an iopener off ebay. it powers on fine, i get a black screen with IOPENER (word) across it. i see a mouse pointer appear in upper left corner. then the blue screen appears with a menu (welcome to) and a short musical tune (no voices) and then i see the modem light flashing. it stops flashing after a bit. OK. here is what i have so far:

i removed the back and rf shield
i installed a slim cpu cooler
i installed a 9mm ibm travelstar 5gb hd
i put it all back together (everything fits nice!)
i used the y cable adapter for keyboard/mouse
i powered it on, pressed ctrl-alt-esc like a woodpecker on a redwood!
i crossed fingers fer good luk. did not work, no bios screen, booted normally into blue screen menu
i tried the regular f1, delete keys. nothing
i tried tried tab 4444 esc 4444, ctrl-alt-home, and all combinations thereof,
to get some response outta this thing!

Can anyone tell me what version # this is by the info above?
Do you think i need a mod bios to make this thing work?
I have read a post that the mouse and keyboard should be plugged in reversed? Is this true? I tried it with no luck at all.

Thanks for all your help! Sorry if this topic has been beaten to death, but i couldn't find anything that fit my condition exactly!

The "Y" adapter should have labels for "Mouse" & "Keyboard". When used with an IOpener, plug a normal keyboard (not the original IOpener keyboard) into the one with "Mouse" label, and the mouse into the one labeled "Keyboard". Try TAB, then Ctl-Alt-Esc, or Ctl-Alt-F12. If all else fails, order a replacement bios from badflash.com. However, if your present bios chip has "goop" on it, you'll require further engineering to get a functioning machine. At one time (don't know if the files needed are still around), those with "gooped" bios chips, were able to re-flash the bios, under the QNX operating system. Do a search on this BBS for more info.
The bios MUST be updated, in order to be able to boot from HD. The only exception would be the very earliest "V1" IOpeners, that have NEVER "called home" to Netpliance (the now-defunct ISP). The IOpener you have, has already "called home", so cannot boot from HD without either flashing or else physically swapping out the bios chip.

i suspected that it had called home already and could be my problem. i will keep the Y cable thing in mind when i get my new bios chip from badflash. no goop on bios though so i am lucky there. i plugged a keyboard straight into the ps2 port and still couldnt get the bios screen. although i did get a brief cursor flash on the screen (with ctrl-alt-esc), the iopener seemed to reboot itself (skipping the text logo) and went right for the blue menu screen. ah well. i guess the best route is the mod bios chip.

thanks again.

The later versions of the iopener were shipped with bios that could not boot from a hard drive or be hacked. The bios chip must be removed and updated. We have them in stock, or can reprogram yours.

I'd like to do some experimenting. Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced chip programmer compatable with the iopener EEPROM ?

www.badflash.com

I got the chip in mail an hour ago, pulled old one with some jeweler screwdrivers popped in badflash's chip powered the IO on and voila!! I got the post screen and pressed DEL to get into bios!

i was lucky enuff not to have to deal with the epoxy...

pop out the old chip in yer IO, then send it to badflash fer some re-education.. ;)
