I have a v5 and have enjoyed it alot. I upgraded to ma 128 compact flash with win95 lite and 128 ram. I'm thinking the cpu is fried do to a faulty fan. I have a p166 mmx and was trying to find info on switching out the cpus, but can only find reference to using amd k6, turbochip etc. I remember codemans original was with a p166, but can't remember if it was classic or mmx.

Any help on upgrading info would be appreciated. I hate to loose such a great system.

The v5 already has split-voltage built in, so you can run just about any chip you want. (Please set the voltage jumpers as appropriate, though).

I may be wrong (and someone will correct me if so), but the K6+ chips are the most painless and most effective upgrades for V5 machines when you use the 5.40A BIOS. If I recall correctly, Reverend Jones added a patch that boosts K6+ chips to run at 100MHz FSB so you don't even need to tinker with soldering DIP-switches to adjust the clock-speed.

Yes the V540A has all the latest fixes and supports the K6+ processor. It is version independant and works on all versions. To go over 200Mhz you need to use a soldering iron.

I just got a v5 from Jack, (Thanks, Jack for the quick service). But I am having a problem that I haven't seen before or heard about. I popped in a V540a chip and hard wired the iopener to boot at 500mhz. Widows will load fine, but all my version of linux, Mandrake9.1, RedHat 8.1, SuSe 8.1, and Slackware 8.1 all refuse to load. They stop when probing the processor and the 500mhz boot speed seems to be the problem. I don't feel like running at a lower mhz speed as all these versions except Slack runs sluggish at the lower boot speeds. Has Anyone else obsverved this problem??

This is alsmost always a result of running out of juice for the processor. Have you tried upgrading the power supply to LSN-2/10-D5. This gives you 10 amps at 2 volts form the 5V power supply. You can also get a 1.8V version. Tapping into the 5V supply at the USB power allows you to have the voltage switched without extra circuitry. You can get these from datel for $25 delivered. They wouldn't give me samples.

I am using a power brick that has twice the juice that the standard power brick has. But I am using the dropping resistor right now. I had a datel in my last iopener when it died. When I got the new iopener from Jack the other day I tried using this datel in the new iopener. No luck. I get out my meter and discover that the datel is toast. Check the old iopener, revert it back to the dropping resistors with q16 hooked up again and old iopener works!
What exactly is the lsn-2/10-d5? Is that a datel model number?

Yes, that is the datel number. This is a 5V to 2 volt 10 amp unit and it is tiny and over 85% efficient. The dropping resistor method is limited to around 7.6 amps and the 3.3 volt power supply is only rated for 4 amps. The poor sucker is just tapped out is all. The 5V power supply is the IO is under used and is also rated at 4 amps. With a step down switching power supply 5V at 4 amps translates to 8.5 amps at 2 volts with no problem. The K62+ needs around 8 to 9 amps to go 500Mhz.
