Linux and a V5
I'm having the greatest of difficulty installing linux on my V5

Ok, I've searched and searched to no end on this board. Pretty much all I've come up with as for how to install linux on my IOpener is to put the drive in a desktop and install linux there, and then move the drive over to the IOpener. This I have done numerous times. I've tried Mandrake 8.0, Mandrake 9.0, and Lindows. (I'd prefer to get Mandrake 9 on it). Both the mandrake flavors have some sort of error about init (I don't have it available in front of my at the moment), and Lindows just stops somewhere after Detecting Hardware. In the desktop, hda is the IOpener hdd, hdb is empty, hdc is a CD-RW, and hdd is a DVD-ROM drive when I install.

So what method should I take to get a full distro of Linux on my IOpener? I downloaded slackware last night to play with, but that's going on the desktop when I get a chance and I'd still like Mandrake 9 on the IOpener.

Second, did the V5 audio under linux ever get solved? I've searched and searched and never found a resolution listed.

Finally, I have a Farallon PN796 USB ethernet adapter with the AMDTek AN986 chipset. I googled and finally found a mention that it might be supported by the Pegasus drivers under Mandrake. Any confirmation?

Thanks for the help even though I am late in the IModding game.

The only successful way of getting any flavor of linux on my iopeners is with a badflash cable and a toshiba 1402b cdrom. The cdroms are still available on ebay. I haven't tried a network installation, though. It may be done with windows on the disk originally. I may try it when I can find the time. Dammit, like I really need another project. LOL

Certainly that isn't the only way... I could do that, but I don't want to spend any more money at the moment on this toy... the power (ha) of the IOpener just doesn't make it worth it to spend more than what I've got in it already, really, unless I was hard up for a portable system (I have several worthy notebooks, so I'm not in need of portability)

I'm thinking that I should do an install in a desktop, then boot it and remove all the devices that I can (or recompile it for the IOpener hardware)... the part I don't understand is that I can't seem to even boot with it in the IOp, even though it should be recognized as the same hda device (which is what seems to be the problem)

Any help?

well, I'd say, First thing.. get it to boot to dos... else you'll have trouble getting beyond that... then, if you have a big@$$ HD, you could install from a dos partition. Good Luck!

Hey Computerguy5,
This is actually very simple *IF* you buy a 2.5 to 3.5 hard drive adapter. There are dozens on eBay and typically sell for about $5.00. Check out an eBay Search for a list. These allow you to plug the laptop drive into your regular PC for your install. I did this last week with the latest Debian GNU/Linux and it worked perfectly. If your going to recompile a new kernel leave it in your PC and recompile there. It'll be a LOT faster unless your PC is an old P200
I also use a Farallon PN796 USB ethernet adapter and using the Pegasus drivers under Linux does work. It's the CONFIG_USB_PEGASUS=Y line in the kernel .config file.

I tried with the adapter. No matter what, I still get init errors. I had a friend mention that it may be because the desktop system is an Athlon Tbird and the IOpener is a Rise mp6, so when I get some time, I'm going to pull the hard disk and processor out of the iopener and put them in a socket 7 system with a Via chipset that I have here and try the install.

As for recompiling the kernal, I am such a linux newb (I've used it for various things over the years, but I never got very indepth with it... the Iopener was going to be my linux playtoy to learn things without tying up one of my other systems which are usually kept busy doing other things).

I'll post what happens when I try the linux install in the socket 7 system when I get around to it.

Just a suggestion, But if you use the DOS usb mass storage driver. You could install linux from a usb cdrom. Problem is, is that you got to load the driver right and any rebooting makes this a ONE time shot untill you get the USB drivers loaded for making a USB cdrom working. just food for thought.
Here is a good example http://www.pocketech.net/downloads/duse_4_4.zip This has every thing you need. Just rember you MUST boot the computer to a DOS prompt with duse being loaded HIGH. So that means you also need himem.sys.

this page may yield some aid as well http://www.bgdf.com/darkehorse/PC/DOS/Drivers/USB/index.shtml
Oh ya last but not least! DONT even bother installing from cdrom UNLESS you have the 5.40a version of the bios code for the iopener. Because you MUST have the USB fix enabled. JUST FYI. Rember when creating a kernal MAKE SHURE you get every thing you need to make that CDROM work after the dos driver has been wipped out from a reboot and self booting on its own partition.
