Dumpster Diving 4 !!
Only the finest garbage comes home.

Hi All,

The last thread was once again full, so I think its time for a new one. With that said, I've got a new list of freshly picked goodies.

Last week:

2x Quantum Fireball lct 15, 20 gig drives, both took a format and dos scandisk surface scan. They have compaq OEM tags on them.
1x Western Digitan Caviar 135AA, 13.5 gig drive, also took a format and surface scan, with compaq tag.
Hitachi 4.8 gig laptop ide drive... Not tested yet, suprise, theres a Compaq tag on it.
Adaptec 2940, narrow pci scsi card, exactly what i needed to drive the HP Scanjet 4c I got a mobnth or so ago. Both work great!
US Robotics 33.6 external faxmodem, with power cord and serial cable, powers on ok, don't have much use for it though.
Socket 7 motherboard, SIS 630 chipset, compaq part, will do 550mhz without using tricks, fsb up to 133mhz, has a small gash in the side that may be repairable.
Logitech Wingman Formula Force GP, force feedback steering wheel, cable from wheel to pedals torn, no power supply. Anyone have one of these and can give me the voltage requirements? Untested until I pu a new fitting on the cable (similar to telephone handset connector) and figure out power.
Misc mouses, ps2 keyboards
5 or 6 boxes of Fasson "Offset'N Laser" paper, which is like sticker paper you print on. Its a little bigger than a normal piece of printer paper, to allow for a small border that you pull against to peel the sheet off. Sounds like a fun thing for kids. Maybe 500 sheets per box?
Printers! HP Deskjet 660c and 560c, Lexmark 1100, and a panasonic kx-p1180. All work, the inkjets have empty color carts but enough b/w to print with.
40 or so black CD-R's, memorex brand, loose in a dumpster. Washed them off, they work fine.
10 or so plastic tubs, great to use for organizing your finds. You can fit about 20 ATX power supplies in one.
4 or 5 PCI modems. Some with voice support. Not yet tested.
This week:

New fabric executive office chair. Box says missing hardware, contents appear to be there otherwise. Same dumpster, hardwarer kit for chair.
Smallish leather office chair.l This one was used, and dismantled before it went in the dumpster. No bolts but I find those all the time.
4x new wooden filing cabinets. Look better than the cheap-o my wife bougth 4 years ago, got to build it then probobly replace the old one and sell the rest.
The *duh* award of the day goes to the store that threw out a brand new 100 pack of Memorex 48x CD-R's. The only thing I saw wrong with it was the shrinkwrap was removed and the label was off of it. Maybe someone took one? Looks like about 100 CDs to me though.
3x cans of ArmorAll Tire Spray stuff, its supposed to clean your tire and make it shine, and keep it from dry-rotting.
1x each bottles of paint stripper and paint thinner, both brand new.
GBC Paper Trimmer, http://www.officedepot.com/pictures/SK/MD/330379_sk_md.jpg in case you don't know what that means. New, with some paint on it to discourage scrappers. Good thing we got that paint stripper, huh? (Guess where this one came from...)
Paymaster check security gizmo. Looks like something that could get an unscrupulous person in trouble. See the movie Catch me if you Can? Good movie. Its the device Leo had in the hotel room that puts numbers on checks. Was hoping to sell on Ebay, not looking too promising though.
New box of Quicken 2000 Deluxe (with quicken family lawyer built-in!). Hopefully will be Ebay-able.
ISA Voice Modem, 56k, jumper configurable or PnP. I prefer jumpers for ISA cards.

Thats about it. Its nice to get such a high percentage of stuff that tests out ok vs stuff that blows up when you plug it in. If I start around 8:30, I'm done with my regular route by around 11am, and I can spend a few hours looking at new places. Unfortunately, the new places i"ve been looking aren't paying off, we didn't get a single item after the regular route and were out until after 4.

Anyone finding XBOX's lately? If so, send me a PM, I'm looking for some info and a possible trade.

Squash

Squash,
Nice finds!

Just a tip,

If the spray paint is recent, try hardware grade denatured alcohol, rubber gloves, cotton rags, Do it outside someplace safe away from kids, pets. Don't let it dry until all paint is removed.
PS, alcohol is a LOT safer than paint stripper (AKA* Methelene chloride).

FYI> watch who is watching you,
I found out one of my most serious competitors is a Female security guard, She's seen what I score on and now she's a serious contender! (Her hobby is computers too!)

Ok, I'm sorry to dump it here, but since the other threads are full, and reading filled threads takes forever on dialup...

Can I be pointed towards basic DD techniques that the sucessful divers here use? I can google it, of course, but I want to know what you people do that works and what parts of the country you guys work out of.

I'm cheap and this is cool.

My impression, from casually scanning these posts every now and then, is that one major factor is to be in a large metropolitan/tech area like Houston or something. Is this one of the first rules of succesful DD'ing?

Being in a large techically oriented city works for me! Near Billy boys home town...

Luck of the draw too!

Latest finds,

A Tiny (Brand name) mini computer. (P-III) missing CPU, Ram and harddrive.

Came with MSI Mobo, Combo DVD/CDR, floppy and MS Win 98SE COA sticker intact.

I popped in the missing components that I have salvaged from previous finds and powered it up. First thing I noticed that the power supply was emitting HOT air like a blow dryer! <NOT GOOD>

I decide to remove everything except the power supply and reinstall in a NEW mini Inwin case.

Just got the finishing touches done about a hour ago...

Celeron 1 GHZ, 256MB PC 133, 60GB WD HDD, 64 MB Rage 128 Agp Ati video card, Combo Samsung DVD/CDR Drive, Win 98SE, MSI DVD player, Nice sony speakers and optical USB mouse. (Everything salvaged except the case!)

Just can't get the cheap pctel modem working...

some other finds,

About a dozen various customer returned AGP and PCI video cards Mostly ATI but a few PNY and generic SIS chipsets.
So far the ones I've tested all work fine!

A western digital 120GB Harddrive with a phillips screwdriver tip punctured cover and PCB. The Dirty Dogs...

A Linksys USB network adapter. Get this the stupid store guy cut the usb cable evidently thinking he destroyed it...Wadda dummy,
HA! I just removed the plug out of the socket and plugged another cable in!

Slot 1 P-III 500 cpu

2 K6-500 Cpu's

3-Com 56K Pci modem ^ May get installed in my new free computer.

Several Crucial 128MB PC-100 sodims

Brand new 500Watt ATX AMD certified power supply still wrapped and in box. Barcode on box blacked out with sharpie type marker? Huh?

350 watt ATX power supply.

Lots of other kool stuff but it's late.

Perhaps I'll take pictures one of these days...

The last week has been a GOOD week! Gosh I LOVE THIS HOBBY!

Latest finds,

A MSI KT4V Box with a Motherboard in esd bag in it.
Once I got it back in the car and drove to a safe place to check it out, it was a MSI K7T266 pro2 motherboard, I also then realized it had several other used components floating loose around inside the box. Everything appears to have been leftovers from an upgrade. Note on box said "Used".

They were,
A Gainward 64MB GF2 AGP videocard.
An AMD Athlon Cpu which turned out to be a OEM XP +1700.
A used brand name fan and heatsink.
A stick of 256MB "Jetway brand" DDR Memory.

Unwittingly the same group also provided a floppy of "Trouble shooter" Diagnostics software last month.

Not surprising all the above pass all diagnostics and work fine! (Just built another FREE computer with it)

Other finds include,

An A-Open 32x12x40x CDR drive which works. A tad bit noisey but it works!

A Silver wireless keyboard and mouse. One quirck about the keyboard is the letter "L" appears 180 degrees (Upside down like a stiff 7) all other characters are fine...Humm?

A CHROME 400 watt ATX power supply. The ANTEC power supply tester came in handy again. (Passed multimeter test too)!

A "Barebones Case that has some very slight cosmetic damage to the bottom front edge plastic (Dropped)
It came with a ECS K7SEM Rev 1 Motherboard (AKA PC CHIPS? YUK!) and floppy drive. (Missing power supply and CD-Rom drive).
Running the same diagnostics it works fine!

Several other types of video cards, some ATI.

New cradles for Compaq, Handspring and HP PDA's,

6-8' Long USB 2.0 and other cables,

Lots of other stuff but it eludes my mind at the moment...Lot of things do that to me lately...

Please if one CHOOSES to persue this type of hobby, READ thru the other previous threads about ALL THE DANGERS AND MANY POSSIBILTIES OF SERIOUS INJURY that could occur in this type of hobby.

Do it at YOU OWN RISK! KNOW YOUR LOCAL LAWS! (Tresspassing for one...) There are numerous websites with a lot of helpful info if one does a SEARCH dumpster diving with yahoo or google...

I made a quick stop on the way to work today at one of my favorite dumpsters, found 5 15" monitors that looked like they had been dropped off of a cart. Two had broken screen, I grabbed the other 3 and they work great! A little epoxy will have them looking just fine too. I got 2 sony flat screen trinitrons, and a nec multisync, all recent or current models...

One thing I've found about cd burners, pretty much all of them work if you burn at 4x instead of the rated maximum. I think I've had 1 out of about 12 drives that just didn't work at all. Next time you get some 48x burners that don't work, try them at 4x, you might get a nice suprise.

4x is better than nothing, right?

I FINALLY got a new Palm m515 back from Palm in warranty repair? ! It did cost me $25 bucks but I'm not complaining! considering these currently sell for $200-$250.

The Msi K7T266 Mobo I found a few weeks ago had an intermittant at the dual Ps-2 riser on the mobo. Win XP would occasionally freeze on me and thats why! Sombody may have pressed to hard connecting mouse/keyboard. Some flux and a soldering iron should fix it!

Gosh the mall parking lots are looking a little bare in my areas, Fewer customers typically means fewer finds.

Latest finds,

A Samsung "Combo" CDR/DVD Drive. Works fine. It has a home already in one of my salvaged 1 ghz "Book PC" machines.
A local OEM sells a similar drive for about $80.

A HP Pavilion, Had a badly damaged case. I pulled many of the components on the spot which included an Intel celeron 766 Cpu, A 20GB HDD with Win ME and a 128MB stick of Pny ram.

A Box of about 40 BLACK CD-Rom bezels and slot covers for the Toshiba XM series drives. Most of these are still factory wrapped in protective plastic.

A bunch of different broken Compaq i-Paq, HP Jornada and Handspring visor PDA's, Most have broken screens. A few came with Usb cradles and wall warts.

A 64MB Ati AGP Video card with TV out.

A Ultra ATA 133 Pci card.

Another 802.11b wireless access point.

A 10/100 Pcmcia network card.

And more!

I'm particularly interested in all the PDA's you seem to find. What do you do with all of those??

Mick73,

Yes it's pretty much clutterd here with Office max cardboard file boxes everywhere....I use them to store this stuff.

I had really counted on going out on strike last year, But folks had some common sense and decided it would be a bad time to strike. (Dang!)

I usually have a few HUGE driveway sales to cull some of it while we are out...Last sale was about 4 years ago and I made a small fortune.

I occasionally get a few PDA's (Like the Casio E-200 backlight problem or M515 null errors) That are warranty issues but the store either got careless or just didn't care. I followed up where they left off!

The broken OOW or physically damaged PDA's, I put them all in a box and sell them as an "Experimenters special AS-IS" lot. I got a few guy's bugging me about my current collection at work, We have been haggling over the price.

This hobby is VERY addicting!

02U2,

You should think about selling that stuff on eBay. I'd be more than happy to consider bidding on a lot of broken PDA's. I've had some pretty good luck buying broken ones off ebay fixing them and reselling them again. Out of curiosity what kinda price you guys bickering about right now for your current "As is" box???

I've sold a few things on ebay, but I've found that most of what I've gotten is low-key enough that it doesn't bring a particularly high price. I'm thinking about a yard sale, but that means I would have to stockpile a bunch. I've been tossing a lot of stuff that I can't use directly, and invariably it gets picked up by another trash-picker before the garbage man gets it.

darkspectre,

I'm not sure yet. I'm hoping to find another one that has an intact usable lcd screen and a good battery in the near future.
I'm not sure if the mainboard is any good, The corrosion extends partially onto the PCB and may have pemanently damaged some of the smd components while the battery was attached.

Well, the last 4 months have been VERY VERY dry. I believe the corporates have FINALLY wised up here and are now penny pinching just about everything! Must be the state of our economy.

All those kool "product replacement" cores now seem to be history too....

I have noticed that some items have been showing up at the local used computer shops. I recognize some of the original shop service ID stickers still stuck to some of the used notebooks and other items.

My last "big find" was last month with 10 copies of Corel wordperfect 10 "Family 4" software packages.
Other than that just basic scraps.

It was VERY GOOD while it lasted Thank you corporate america!

Ah what the heck, It's been a couple of months...

Latest finds!

A Sony internal DVD/CD Rewritable drive, Model DRU-510A, The drive motor does not spin. Funny thing is on the inside of the Sony box it came in, there is a label on the lid flap that says problems? do not return drive to store, Call 1-800-XXXXXXXX for customer support. Hmmm, MFG date on drive May 2003....1 year warranty.

1 silver faced combo 48X CD burner 16X DVD player. Nice looking but testing it with Dr Hardware 2003 drive runs a tad bit slow (22X average). It's going in my Shuttle SV24 when I get ready to sell it.

1 stick of Elixir 512MB DDR2700 ram.

1 stick of Pny 128MB DDR 2100 ram.

2 copies of OEM Win XP Home and 2 copies Win ME all with coa stickers still attached to the packaging. 3m sticky notes attached to these with comments.

1 Used AMD 1700+ Athlon CPU.

Numerous OEM Athlon heatsink and fans. Unused.

1 Asus Athlon Mobo supports 333Mhz bus.

1 Asus P-4 Mobo.

1 Tiny (Brand) Computer case with hardware.

1 30GB Ibm Travelstar Notebook Harddrive. Works fine, Passes all IBM Drive fitness test diagnostics! Loaded Win XP fine and works great in my old Ibm model 390 P-II 300mhz Thinkpad! Bios recognizes full capacity.

1 60GB 5400 Rpm 3.5" Maxtor drive.

Lots of Belkin Usb cables and other stuff.

I think the next one will be early spring.

Seems like every time I find time, I open the container door...Seems like I get a bit overwhelmed by the task at hand and end up fiddling around awhile and then putting the rest of it off till the next available weekend...Then I collect more in the meantime...(That's been going on for a long time now) I've got a LOT more testing, repackaging and labling to do.

Perhaps after December 12th I should have plenty of free time for this task (possible early retirement?)<The ugly work alternative offerd for me then is 12hr days, 4pm to 4 am, 7 days a week for 2 or 3 weeks straight in a row then 1 weekend off with no end in sight *That REALLY SUCKS*.

ONE WORD OF ADVICE! If you or anyone you know take a laptop or desktop computer to a retail service center for hard drive upgrade or repair be sure you get your old harddrive back so you can destroy it if you no longer want it or plan not to reuse it!

SMASH IT! THE HAMMER IS THE MOST SECURE WAY OF DESTROYING YOUR DATA!

Most of these upgrade centers just toss the drive with customers personal data STILL on it!

I usually 0 wipe most drives I find that are repairable with the manufactures reccommended utility software.

This erases the drive and usually eliminates any minor surface errors or defects and offers options to verify the drive is usable.

I DO NOT recover or use any personal info that may be left on the drives PERIOD! IT GETS ERASED! May not be DoD spec's but it gets erased.

***************************************************************************************

Ol' Techie boy keeps screwing up? I guess that what happens when marginal wages are offered and only attracts low end help...

Scored on a Toshiba 2.5" 9mm Notebook harddrive. 60GB, 5400 rpm, 2mb cache. Testing it reports no problems so far.

Upgraded my Toshiba 1.8ghz notebook from 30GB to 60GB using this drive!

The salvaged drive re-partitioned and formatted fine with no reported bad sectors or other problems.

Using Toshiba's recovery disks that came with my notebook, flawlessly restored the operating system on this "upgraded" harddrive. After completed restore, WinXP home CHKDSK reported no problems.

Techie boy also tossed a customers retail full version copy of Windows XP Pro W/SP1a (keycode on CD paper packet instead of in a folder?) I wonder if this was intentional or accidental? Hmmm, I'm not going back in to ask...

Also got 6 oem microsoft optical usb mice still new wrapped in original plastic.

Many brand new all copper heatsinks for Xeon cpu? Still have the plastic protective cap over the fins.

A hughs direct tv DVR console with Access card: 4 still in smart card slot. I opened the box and it's missing the harddrive DANG!

Bunch of other misc stuff like cables, bags of screws and the like.

Amazing what stuff these guys still throw away! I'm still one step ahead of my salvage competition most of the time!

Lots of Laptop power adapters,

The usual computer customer returned parts,

A bunch of 32, 64, 128, and 256 mb agp video cards. These are low end type cards nothing fancy.

A Combo beige internal floppy/usb card reader.

A ton of new crimp type barrel automotive low voltage connectors, I estimate 200-300 various sizes. Panduit ties and double back sticky foam tape. Gee if I bought these at an automotive supply or hardware store these would cost a small fortune!

1 P-4 2.66GHZ 533 512...It had 3 bent pins and I was able to straighten them. Plugged it in and boots! Watched temp in bios heath monitor and seems stable...Diagnostics later tonight? If my Cats leave me alone...

5 Athlon all +2600 cpu's, all have a golden brown color around the core...Oh well.

LOTS of 256mb DDR ram! Most are still in oem esd bags. Some have clearance price tags still on them. One set matched 256 x 2 333mhz. Have not tested these yet.

1 256mb pc 133 sdram for notebook. Have not tested yet.

2 Hitachi 40gb 2.5" notebook drives one passes Hitachi's DFT and the other fails oh well.

1 15gb Hitachi notebook drive, not tested yet.

1 Western digital 80gb 3.5 drive, not tested yet.

Assortment of oem heatsinks and fans for athlons...

That's all for now...

YES! The 3.0 ghz P-4 cpu WORKS so far....Going to run 8hr burn in test soon!

After very carefully and tediously hand straightening the bent pins on the cpu under a lit magnifier after cleaning the silver thermal compound from BOTH sides of the cpu several times with 100 proof alchohol...some compound was bridged between the pins, The previous person was VERY messy with the thermal compound. That's probably why they returned the cpu and techie boy tossed them.

I BOUGHT a MSI uATX motherboard that supports 800mhz fsb. I'm planning on BUYING the Antec Aria mini atx case http://www.pctoyland.com/prod_656.htm and build myself a game machine. 4 card slots.

I was considering another Shuttle xPC barebones but....

I have a 2nd 3 ghz p4 with even more bent pins....this one is going to be a REAL challenge... But I'm confident now it will work too when I'm done. EEEEE bay?

Lots of finds last week! Competition snoozed. TOO BAD!

OK,

The 2.66 ghz and 3.0 ghz P4 cpu's work fine. NORTHWOOD cores, evidently according to local OEMs these Northwoods are more desireable for overclocking than the prescott core. Prescott runs TOO HOT!

I broke 1 pin off trying to hand straighten the bent pin of the 2nd found 3.0 ghz cpu, Dang! Put this one on the back burner. Maybe one day I'll try and reattach the pin????

I have to say this to one of my very stupid competitors...He is making things more difficult for the rest of us recyclers by leaving such a MESS around the dumpsters. This REALLY ticks off the store folks who have to clean it up the next day if I don't make it there and clean it up! When they are ticked off they don't leave any useable goodies for us!

This last month has been simply marvelous!
The other guys have been seriously snoozing.

IMHO most technology customers are confused or just cannot read and follow written instructions. The following are store returns,

Awesome find! A JVC dish network DVR Model TUDVR510RU. Missing remote (The DVR did look like NEW! Dissassembled now).
Smart card was still in the slot. Hooked the DVR up to my tv and it searches for a signal. I had hoped to use it as a DVR only but no on screen display for that function.

I left the dish in the trash. I already have several dishes. I did take the dual LNA though.
I opened up the DVR and it had a 120GB Maxtor harddrive. Tested the drive and works fine! Writing zeros to the drive takes forever though. The rest MAY go back to the trash except for the UHF remote receiver module.

Other stuff,

qty 3 40GB Seagate harddrives, only one works. The 2 others have issues. Warranty check at there website...still in warranty over 4 years left!

Lots of ATI video cards, AGP and PCI 32,64 and 128 Meg. Random sampling and most work. 3D Mark 03 works fine on the 128MB cards.

256MB digital mp3 player. It works but the LCD display has issues.

Lots of like new headphones! I use denatured alcohol wipes on these.

Various PCMCIA cards, usb 2.0, 1394, etc.

Several 52x CD burners.

I really appreciate the FEW retailers who don't smash these items. Thank you!

More kool finds!

Can be EXTREMELY DANGEROUS for the inexperienced! One can get seriously hurt or injured if they are not careful!
Check your local laws! Dumpster picking may be illegal in your area! Trespassing?

I'm on my way building another next to free hi end 3ghz computer! Pretty kool considering I'm in between jobs!
This month has been simply marvelous! $2K in finds. Competition sleeps...

Just need a 800 FSB 478 Motherboard, a decent case and Dual layer DVD burner!

Hmmm, since most of the stuff that is recycled seems to be retail customer returned electronic and computer throw away's, It should be easy to figure out.
Your YMMV depending on location. Like they said, check your local laws if it's legal in yur area. One could possibly get arrested and thrown in jail for trespasing or something else? Depends on how the store and your local LEO feels about it.

Be careful, It's VERY easy to get seriously injured if one is not very experienced in this hobby.
Dumpster dive at your own risk.

PS, what if your friends, neighbors and co-workers find out?
