How do you enter special characters (i.e. @) in the modem setup username?

You can't, due to a bug in Midori's config scripts. You can edit the PPP config files by hand and add it, although I tried doing this for a friend and still couldn't get their PPP dialup to work.

It's a while since I looked; I think it was ppp.chap.secret and ppp.pap.secret, or something like that. Do a

find / -name "*secret*"

Actually, there is no find command, so you may have to try using:

echo /*/*secret*
echo /*/*/*secret*
echo /*/*/*/*secret*

etc, to find them.

You should find four files, two of which are read-only. Edit the ones that are read-write, and then freeze the config to propogate the changes to the read-only ones.

Hello All,
I too have been trying to use the modem on the Midori Linux for the I-Opener. I contacted the author of the lastest version and he helped me find a way around the "@" in username problem.
Gramster, you were on the right track!!

Step 1) Enter your information into the (modem setup) area and click "Save".
Step 2) Run the built-in editor Nedit and drill down to //tmp/config/.eznet/eznet.conf, open it, add your "@" and save it back out.
Step 3) Click back to Opera and under (Storage), Freeze the configuration.

OK... now on to the next problem! The Nameserver.
From here you can now dial-up and make a connection. However, entering a web url just returns an error but entering the I.P. address of that site does take you there.
It seems that the Nameserver is not functioning even though you enter the correct address'.
I found the file ppp.conf and it has the correct address' in it but it still doesn't work.
BTW, I also asked the author again about this problem but he says he never used the modem so he didn't have an answer.

Anyone have any ideas??

Well, it's sorta a shot in the dark (since I don't own an I-O) but on a "standard" linux setup, you would have a file "resolv.conf" (normally in /etc) that has the nameservers, one per line. On my local networked machines, I have a domain name server running on 192.168.0.1, so their /etc/resolv.conf files are simply:

192.168.0.1

Dunno if midori does anything strange [like renaming/moving/removing/forgetting to place] the file, but maybe that'll help..

If you still can't get it to work, feel free to send me an I-O and I'll figger it out for ya ;)

IT WORKS! Thanks Zamiel. Between your instructions and JeffJ I was able to get a fully functional Opera browser in Midori m4i-2.3pre1 with the dial-up modem.

Just to be clear, in my case it required two workarounds from the normal configuration.

Problem (1): Username does not allow "@" symbol. (I.E., you can't use your email address)

Problem (2): DNS numbers are not working (address' are not resolved)
Step 1) Open the editor Nedit and drill down to //tmp/config/etc/resolv.conf , open it, add your DNS numbers as:
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
then save it back out.
Step 2) Click back to Opera and under (Storage), Freeze the configuration.

Also, I noticed that any bookmarks made during a session are not saved unless you "Freeze" them before you shutdown.
