What zmoz is referring to is what Buy.com calls the "Price mistake of the day". Look in the left margin of the main page. The price is only good for 24 hours, so we both missed it. :(

Acvanced Circuits has posted another "Free Prototype PCB" promo. This time it is either two (2) free (single or double sided) boards or $350 off a multi (3 or more) layered board order .... etc. The catch is this time you really have to be fast as the promo ends 5/31/03. If you have designed your own i-mod 3 board or dual serial board or better yet an adapter board to plug in a 1+ Ghz processor....etc. Or if you just like this sort of thing or just want to try out a free linux PCB software, or a Free Windows PCB software or a Free Mac PCB software don't sit around on this one.

Compusa has the HP 1000 Photo scanner on sale for $29.99.

I'm impressed with it. I've scanned everything from pennies to a Matrix ticket stub to a P-4 1.6ghz cpu. All looking fairly good!

If it's used on an older laptop and the scanner does not work try using a BEEFIER or shorter Usb cable.
The cable that comes packaged with the scanner did not allow enough juice to the scanner to function. I believe a combination of too long of cable and too small of cable conductors. It could be my Dumpster special P-II 300 Thinkpad Laptop Usb does not supply enough juice? I'll try the supplied cable on my new Toshiba later on...

Best Buy Has a "Kogi brand 14.1" LCD Model L4AX Monitor for $150+tax AFTER $70 MIR.
I know BB SUX but I bought it anyway.

I'm looking for a replacement LCD for a 14.1" Toshiba P-III 700MHZ Model 2805-s202. I fished out of the dumpster last year. Tossed because of cracked LCD. They wanted over $1,400 for the replacement LCD panel alone at that time!!!!

I've fished out an earlier model 14.1 " kogi last month and it also had a cracked screen. Just so happen to have an LG model LCD screen so I hope the L4AX has an LG model too!~

It actually produces a fair picture! Got it setting on top of my Shuttle SS40g for the time being...

First thing I checked for was any defective pixels..HAS NONE!

I turned uo the brightness and it gets pretty bright! Possibly good enough for car daytime use!

Requires 12DC @2A using the supplied AC adapter. Supports up to 1024x768 @75hz.

Field of view is rather narrow, approx 15-20 degrees from center each side.

Overall I give it a good rating for the price.

He he, The sales dude really tried to sell me the $50 service plan. Nada!

Comes with a Video cable that is really a lot thinner than most!

Seems to run fairly cool.

I have 2 weeks to play with it.

The factory seal came off rather easy and intact with a little heat applied.

Radio Shack is giving away a pair of FRS radios ($9.99 BEFORE the $20 rebate). See catalog #21-1894. These are rather cheap units but surprisingly are much better than what I expected. They are listed as 500 mW units with a range up to 2 miles. The pair I just bought we tested out to one mile with rather clear reception. Considering these things are mass produced I would surmise that the likelyhood of actually getting a unit capable of putting out 500 mW is rather small. With that in mind I was wondering what kind of job it would be to tweak these to increase the power output a bit. Any suggestions?

New MessageRE:Deals, Deals, Deals 4! (modified 0 times) 02U2

Doubling the RF output would only increase the actual range a very small amount.
Drawbacks to name a few would be,
#1 Violation of LAW (probably several), Voiding type acceptance.
#2 Increased RF interference(to include harmonics)with other radio services which may include fire and medical emergency services on other Uhf frequencies.
#3 Increased current consumption (shorted battery life).

Referencing the above flashdrives,
Removing the sheet metal cover (Held on with 4 slotted screws) reveals that only about 1/4th of the pcb is populated with flash memory...Lots of pads for more chips!

With the covers removed the flashdrive PCB is ultra thin, less than the thickness of the 2mm ide header. Could fit in an i-Opener with ease!

Not being an expert on flash drives, I'm wondering if the SMD chips from another same model flash drive can be removed to build a single 512MB drive or larger. Seems like there is enough space onboard for at least 1 GB worth of chips!

Comp-usa has a Maxtor 120GB 8MB Cache Harddrive for $60 after $40 MIR.

Just FYI though...Most of the Harddrive store "Product protection" warranty cores I use to salvage for some reason or another were Maxtor. Very few Western digital. It seemed like to me most of the the Maxtors were typically in store warranty replaced by Western digital brand. Some of the defective Maxtors drive cores could be restored to factory spec by using "MaxDiag" (A VERY long process but worth it!)

Gosh I love Vetco Surplus Electronics in Bellevue!
If you live near Bellevue Wa. Visit Vetco from time to time!
I usually stop by and browse almost every other day! (it's in line with my daily routine).

Just scored on a Rubbermaid plastic bin full of X-10 stuff. Most of it still new in individual boxes.

At first when I saw it on the shelve marked $39 I thought it was $39 for each item in the bin, But store dude said the price was for the entire bin! I promptly paid cash.

Contents are,
1 2.4ghz X-10 color camera with battery pack.
1 extra battery pack still in box.
1 2.4 ghz receiver.
4 Remote controls still in boxes.
4 Wireless dark grey grey mini infrared motion sensors.
1 Wireless VCR Commander.
1 Screw in light bulb socket controller
A few other items that elude my mind at the moment...
All the wall warts included.

Gosh I love this hobby!

BTW, they have reverse RP wireless SMA, MMXC, TNC crimp connectors. Little spendy but very handy!

Again for those that live near Bellevue, Wa.

Vetco surplus just got in a bunch of car 12VDC to 19VDC rated @3A, adapters. They priced them @ $20 ea.
These were made for Intermec and are in new condition still in box. I'm not sure if these will supply enough current for the modified I-opener without some internal modifications by someone else knowledgeable enough. There appears to to be room for a small fan. Perhaps the internal heatsink it could be increased in size? Unknown if the power plug is the correct size. I did not buy one, I already have WAY more than enough adapters from office depot clearances and my recycling excursions.

They also have approx 10-11" long Antenna pigtails MMCX to standard SMA with a ferrite toroid. These look like the ones that the Intermec 6640 Tablet PC have for the internal wireless PC Card.

There is SMA rubber duck antennas (Green band 915 MHZ) that fit these on the same isle. The rubber tube cover can removed and the spring antenna could be measured and cut for 2.4ghz....or remove the spring and install a DIY coaxial dipole.

Lots of other KOOL stuff in the store for the tinkerer or hardware Hacker! Some of it is from Intermec.

Definately worth a visit if you live nearby!

Not really a super deal but i'll share anyway,
Rite-Aid drugstores have a GPX wireless 2.4ghz (I'll assume B+W) Infrared LED illuminator type security camera going on sale tommorrow, $39. The current price is $59. Be cautioned IMHO it's butt ugly.

With a little inginuity I imagine one could mount it inside a car, and in the home make a 2.4ghz directional patch antenna and have a 2.4ghz receiver hooked up to a DVR or VCR recording events (security) while parked in the driveway at night.

Maybe even one of those small DSS dishes aimed right and modified with a 2.4 GHZ dipole antenna at the focal point could be used for super extended receiving ranges...

I did manage to go back get an additional "$30 rebate" price match with the Office max advertised rebate on the WD 250gb. Were down to about $40 total investment plus $5? gas for this. SWEET!

For those in Seattle/Bellevue areas...
Vetco surplus just got in a VERY few BRAND NEW Intermec 5055 Rugged vehicle pc's.

http://www.currentdirections.com/hardware/intermec/5055.html

Dude just happened to put on on dislay while I was shopping there.

Barebone unit's. No harddrive. No power cables. No antennas. (I have 2 cases of brand new power cables )

Color 10.4" TFT touch screen, 2 Pcmcia slots, and a slot for 2.5" harddrive.
These are only P-133's with 512 cache and 128mb Ram.

IMHO This would make a good Car GPS and Drive up e-mail station. (Several free WiFi sites here).

Anyway, the price I bought mine for got me all giddy!

Cost me a Grant note, I had to haggle a bit (I'm a good customer). He said they will not sell ME any more at THAT price. They only had a few at that time and that was a few days ago. Some stuff there sells fast sometimes once the geeks find out about it.
I don't know if there are any more left at this time or if they will be getting anymore. They get lot of stuff from Intermec.
On stuff like this I typically buy 2, one is usually a learning curve (oops factor) and/or spare parts so IF I can get another for a Grant note, it will definately be for such purpose.

They had a complete brand new unit with a 3gb Hdd, OS and wireless card w/antenna on e-bay recently and it sold last week for $400 +tax, so I got an excellent deal!

You can try e-mailing or calling them, There website http://www.Vetcosurplus.com

This may be a deal because if you look at the current selling price>http://www.systemid.com/barcode_products/6AA3J6.asp?source=INKTOM

Vetco surplus has 17 more NEW Intermec 5055 Vehicle PC's, Spec's http://www.currentdirections.com/hardware/intermec/5055.html

They are NOT on the floor yet, They MAY be headed to e-bay

The Vetco units are barebones IE> NO HDD or Caddy, NO Win95 os, NO stand, NO Antennas, NO RF PC Card. Just the PC in the picture less the discribed missing items. (HDD caddy can be made fairly easy from sheet metal a real no brainer)

I bought one of the first ones earlier last month for $50 (I made a cash offer ) I doubt very much if they will sell anymore at that price. YMMV...
They recently sold one on e-bay for $399.

I do not work for Vetco, Sorry, please don't ask for me to pick one up for you. I DO NOT want to deal with any possible hassles such as it's not what you wanted, shipping issues, Possible DOA, etc, etc.

Fry's has the 1 gb Sandisk CF module on sale for $69. ($49 after $20 MIR) In todays newspaper flyer.

I did a price match at the local Compusa. They did the price match but gave me a $20 Compusa gift card instead of the MIR rebate.

Wow 1GB, I paid $99 for 256 2 years ago...

Compusa's pulled all the 1gb Sandisk CF cards and hid them... The price matches was taking it's toll ;-p ... They were losing $50 each CF card.

OK, I'm venturing into really a grey area here, I imagine one could use this to mount somewhere on there modded i-appliance(s).....If they are really bored...Hmmm happy holiday decoration...

But the best part is it was FREE! I rescued it from going to the trash.

Hi intensity dual WHITE LED flasher module! Has 2 VERY BRITE white 10mm leds, module and 3 D batteries in a plastic holder.

Got it by asking! Persistantly I might say. The "Keebler holiday express" snack display at your local grocery store. A cardboard train display with the flasher module mounted in the trains "headlight" area.

The module itself has inline solder pads L1 thru L6. L4 is used for the leds. I suspect this is a sequencer module. Rate of sequence controlled by resistor.

Thank you Albertson's grocery store.

Staples has the IO Magic DUAL LAYER internal 16X DVD burner $59+ Tax after MIR.

I price matched @ Office Depot and they don't have a rebate so they gave me the drive for $59 +tax store credit out the door.

IDVD16DD is the model. Comes with Nero 6 and a BLACK faceplate! YES!
