Popping Off Topic over Corn
Deleting Active X Print Controls

How do I find and delete and Active X control?

Here is the story;

ACT II popcorn company is giving out coupons for “Any Flavor, Size” pack of Act II popcorn through their “Pop Peek & Win” page (link below). When you win the coupon the web page mandates that you allow an Active X print control file to be installed or you can’t print the coupon. The Active X print control file prevents printing more than one coupon at a time or printing to a non-printer such as print to pdf writer or print to file etc. It also keeps track of the number of coupons printed from the given machine and then limits the total number of coupons that can be printed out. There is a way around this quantity limit so you can obtain an almost unlimited quantity of legitimate coupons, but that’s another story for another time, right now I want to learn how to get rid of this Active X tracking file. I’m running windows XP and didn’t think to set a system restore point before accepting the Active X print control file. Any suggestions on identifying this Active X file and deleting it?

Here is the link to the Pop Peek & Win game;

BTW: Use bogus e-mail and profile info to avoid the spam, that info is not really needed to play the game anyway.

Why not just photo copy the coupon? :)

The coupon has a dotmatrix security bar code and the dot matrix is not the same on any two coupons that I printed, I suspect it is numbered or serealized or some such nonsence. Granted a scanner could probably duplicate it and a store would not know the difference but sine there is a weak point in the web page that allows one to obtain virtually all the legitimate coupons you could want, going through such trouble has no purpose. I just hate the idea of someome elses software tracking something on my machine. call it paranoid if you wish but I just want to get it off my machine. I did find the Active X file in the Windows\Downloaded Program Files folder and deleted it but evidently it creats some other file else where on the machine because I ran a test (played the game and won) but got the same message that the maxiumu number of coupons that could be printed from this machine has been reached. Any suggestions for killing this sucker?

This control makes a number of regristry entries. Search for cpbrxpie in the registry (nuke it at your own risk) and delete the keys. Reboot and delete the cpbrxpie.ocx in your windows directory.

I searched the registry and located cpbrxpie and looked around a bit but I'm not really sure what I'm looking at. I do not understand what you ment by "delete the keys" nor could I find "cpbrxpie.ocx" in the windows directory. There had been a cpbrxpie file in the windows folder "downloaded program file" that I previously deleted, is that what your are refering to?

What is ment by "delete the keys"?

Reez,

StrangeDog meant for you to delete the windows registry keys (entries) as he described. Do so at your own peril because you can render your system unbootable if you delete unwisely. If you have not edited the registry before, I'd recommend that you NOT start now. The cost of doing so incorrectly can be very high.

If you want to give it a look-see anyhow, go to Start/Run and type in regedit. Search around for cpbrxpie, but make changes/deletions at your own risk. At a minimum, you might want to export out a backup before you do anything.

The Active X control when installed, copies itself from the "downloaded programs" folder to the "windows" directory following youbecha's INF file. It "registers" itself in the system registry in several places. Regedit can effectively remove these entries "Keys". There is always the chance you will bork your machine beyond all hope when you fool with the registry so do so at YOUR OWN PERIL!

Could'nt you just backup your registry before doing this game. Once the game is complete and the cipon is printed. Restore your original registry ??

I do Love PopCorn....

Saving a copy of the registry first sounds like it should work great. Unfortunately, I'm well past that point.
