CPU Cooling Software with the Rise CPU?

My I-Opener came with no goop on the BIOS, the Yamaha sound chip, and a Rise 266 CPU.

After pulling out all of my hair trying to flash the BIOS, I finally sent the chip off to BadFlash to get taken care of (thanks Jack, it works great!).

I installed Win98SE Upgrade Edition by putting the laptop HD in my son's computer, starting the install, inserting my Win95 CD when prompted, then on the first restart I transplanted the laptop HD to the I-Opener. Worked fine. I then installed the Via 4-in-1 drivers, the CyberBlade drivers, and the modem drivers. I made sure IDE was set to primary only in the device manager (I still have one item showing up as unknown and uninstalled...).

All was fine until I tried to use the I-opener for any period of time. It would crash and upon reboot would not finish loading into Windows. If I let it sit for several minutes it would get into Windows, run for a while, then crash. After eliminating several possibilities I began to concentrate on temperature (I'm using the original HS). Each time the I-Opener crashed I'd restart right away and look at the temperature in the BIOS. Every single crash had a CPU temperature of 45 degrees C. If I let it sit for a few minutes it would start again and crash when it hit 45C.

I installed Rain and it locks up when I try to start the program.

I installed Waterfall Pro and got lost in the settings. It asks for CPU type, motherboard manufacturer, sensors, and some other options. Leaving everything set to default seems to increase the amount of time between crashes, but the crashes haven't been eliminated.

Can anyone running Win98 with a Rise CPU and stock HS tell me what CPU cooling software you use and what settings you use?

Thanks!

Did you remove/replace the heat-sink? If you've still got the heat-sink in place, did you use some thermal paste before re-attaching it? How did you mount your HD in the case?

Remember, thermal paste is your friend!

I did remove and replace the heatsink, but I didn't add any thermal tape/paste/grease etc...

I have the HD mounted externally (for now).

I ordered a Tennmax fan and it should be here any day now (and then I'll mount the HD internally). I'm hoping that it will fix my problems.

Try to add a dab of thermal paste. IIRC, there was some thermal tape or something there before -- but removing the heat sink probably horks the contact somewhat. If it's heat-related (and it sure sounds like it), the fan + thermal paste should solve the problem. If you want to test that theory before the fan arrives, try some thermal paste between the cpu and heat sink. I'd bet dimes to dollars that your "lock ups" go away.

In the past I have had problems with the unit locking up or rebooting with bad memory. Replace it and it works fine. Did you upgrade the memory? If so which one do you use?

I got the I-Opener on eBay. The guy selling it didn't seem to know much about it. It came without a powersupply or memory. The I-Opener doesn't do anything without the RAM, so I bought a stick of 32MB from Coast Memory to last me until I get everything else done to it. I thought about the memory being the issue, but I don't have anymore to test with.

I got my Tennmax fan on Friday and the clip broke while I was trying to bend it to fit on the Rise. They sent me a couple replacement clips that arrived today (along with a Pentium 200 MMX I won on eBay). Gotta love the after-sale customer service!

Tonight I'll get a chance to put it all back together and see how she holds up. If all is well I'll loop a memory test overnight.

Edited to add:

The reason I'm leaning more towards heat than memory is the timing. If I let the I-Opener sit in my trunk outside it gets pretty cold and runs without a hitch for a while. Once it starts acting up it keeps acting up until cooled down. We'll find out tonight!

Of all the Socket-7 chips that will run in a I-Opener, the Rise is by far the coolest-running, dissipating about 4W or less. If you have heat problems, it's most probably not from the CPU, and you will also see it with the other CPUs.

You've probably run into some obscure software/instruction-set incompatibility on the Rise with Rain, and it might also be the cause of the reboots.

Anyway, please post your results with the P200/MMX. Although there are better CPUs out there, this is one of my special favorites, gives good results with modest heat on very modest motherboards, with minmum incompatibility issues, and can often be found for $5 or less at swap meets and surplus shops. It's an old workhorse like the Douglas DC-3 aircraft.

Another old workhorse that I like, but for Socket-370 systems, is the Mendocino Celeron 366 to 533, with similar properties to the P200/MMX. Keep mopping them up while you can, I can guarantee that they will be usable until the end of the decade, long after all the present P3/P4s have died from heat/die-fracture related issues.

I didn't take the time to try the Rise again, I put the P 200 MMX on with my Tennmax.

All is well now - 36C while idle last I checked.

I'm still curious about the Waterfall Pro settings, however. I told it I now had a Pentium w/ MMX, but it keeps giving me all sorts of weird readings. Maybe I should ditch it for now and go with Motherboard Monitor...
