Using IO for home Auotmation application
touch screen panel

New MessageUsing IO for home Auotmation application (modified 0 times) VMSPC
I'm planning on using my IO as a touch lcd panel around my home. seems to be cheaper then purchasing a Panja system or creston system, any ideas. Note: I'm using X10 macros.

You can buy a touchscreen overlay that plugs into a serial port for around $100.

do tell us where to get these $100 touch screens? I know a lot of us are interested in that sort of thing.

Last week at the Los Angeles Convention Center there was a huge Internet trade show. Netpliance had a booth and several iopeners on display. The interesting thing was the flat screen iopener embedded in the freezer door of a refrigerator. It was operational and used a touch screen for input. Very cool. Very, not for us yet, as far as Netpliance is concerned.

This is a lot like car companies and show cars. They show us these future cars, and 99.99% of the time never deliver them to the dealership. So, car customizers like George Barris simply build their own! ;)

Sounds kind'a familiar.

Put OS/2 Warp v4 on it with House/2 and you have a voice controlled X10 system:

http://home.att.net/~ASchw/house2.html

Even though you could get OS/2 in the SanDisk you won't have enough space when using the speech system. Hard disk required and a WinChip2 recommended. I believe 32MB of RAM would be enough for just this.

You can get Warp v4 on eBay but you'll have to check on IBM's page for support for the IO sound chip....

Regarding touchscreen at computer show:

Thats very interesting because when the I-Opener craze first started I tried to request a review product from MicroTouch technology. Here is the response I got:

I, too, would like to thank you for your contact with MicroTouch. Without
divulging specifics, we have a team working with Netpliance. I will ensure
they forward your comments and views to the appropriate individuals.

Interesting..

I've got X-10 all over my house, I did try an eval version of HAL2000 (automatedliving.com) for voice control, cool stuff, anyway, regarding the touch screen issue,, I plan on visiting Microtouch headquarters on thier lunch break soon , probably next week if its nice out. (Hopefully my Social engineering skills are good!) last time I knew someone who worked there, he said they always had a large junk bin of displays that failed QC and usually for cosmetic reasons, he gave me a 15" touch screen and control that you added to an existing monitor, Unfortunately, I was using a 14" mon at the time and only played with it a little, there was no way to mount it reasonably.eventualy it got misplaced in a move. anyway I'll be giving it a shot soon

From the information I gathered, there is a product. You can connect the cable to the mouse port and a film screen that sit's in front of screen allowing you to activate icon on your screen. a great example would be the Hometouch software (800.000) which very expensive. the cheap way of doing it, find a cheap shareware kiosk program. I'm currently using a P90 Pentium Nec Versa notebook. I run my light's, all my audio components. I'm hoping to run all my MP3 from my unit

For cheap touchscreens and other parts go to www.xopener.com and click on the links under "Display"

Check the very technical section. I've already got a touchscreen installed on my I-opener. It's a 4 wire resistive w/ a Bergquist controller. Unfortuneatly, I am unsure as the make of the screen as there are no markings. However, they all use the same "protocol", so a bergquist or microtouch controller will work w/ either. Drivers are free from both. The good thing about the bergquist one is that there is a port to bypass the serial interface and talk directly to the UART on it. This means that it will plug directly into the I-opener. Another good thing about the bergquist is that it only requires 3 wires to the I-opener (VCC, Vdd, and TX)

I know I pull this subject back to life after a year....at least I use search! Anyway I am using (trying) to use my IO for home automation. I got X10 stuff all over the house, I have the firecracker software with that thing you plug in the serial port. For some reason it does not work with the IO, and yes I have the RS232 hack, did a check on the port 2 with ndiags and it checked okey. Anybody using similar software/hardware?

I've used ECS home automation software in my house since '93. Now it's available as a Windows ap and also functions as a web page server so you can see your system throughout your LAN or the internet. I am upgradeing to the WIN version and plan to use my I/O as a touchscreen for it. Plan is to have 5 touchscreens.

ECS is great for use on a home LAN and the internet. The interface is highly customizable. They do have a 30 day tryout and a usergroup mailing list where we can discuss things directly with the author and other users. There is also a Linux port of ECS.

One of the most compelling things about the software is that it will work with a huge variety of equipment made by diffeent comanies so you don't get locked into one brand so to speak.

Deadbolt: Thanks for the post, will check out the trial version. I currently use Firecracker software and a serial plug device (really small). Unfortunately the X10 signal does not seems to go out of the IO. The software and device works on my regular desktop, only thing I can thing of is because of the IO power brick...Maybe I should try it on my notebook computer.

I have the dual serial board from badflash/r_fl_z. I used the firecracker interface with a dos command-line x10 control software to test the serial ports. Both ports were able to control the firecracker just fine.

Another great HA program is Homeseer at http://www.homeseer.com, more features than most folks will ever use and a support group of users that exchange their code and macros freely to save you the trouble of doing eveything from scratch. No connection with the company, I just love their software....
