Has anyone had success running an antivirus program? I've tried running McAfee Virus Scan v4.02 which installs but when rebooting the Microsoft screen locks up in shades of gray. What virus detection programs work on the iopener with Win98se?

I've tried Dr. Solomon's with the same problem. Norton Antivirus 6.0 worked for me though, the grey screen still appears while windows is booting, but eventually the desktop comes up. If I disabled the DOS scanning portion, everything works fine.
Hope that helps.

I wonder if thats due to the floppy drive that wont die, worse its runing in dos 'compatibilty' mode. (that's just the windoze way of telling you its not really compatable with anything)

WTF?
I'm running Norton 6, and haven't seen this grey screen you make note of. Maybe something's wrong with your setup.

I'm running Norton Antivirus 7.0 (it's the corportate edition, but I think it's almost exactly the same as the consumer version) The only problem I have is that d/l's seem to slow the machine for about a minute. I think that is due to NAV trying to scan the file, but it does that on my desktop too so it's not an IO problem. Everything else works perfect.

Disabled the dos scanning portion and it's working fine now. Thanks.
I had the same problem putting McAfee antivirus 4.0.2 on my IO. So I followed the advice posted in this thread regarding not to let the DOS scan take place and this fixed the problem. When installing the software I did a custom installation and unchecked the DOS scan and creation of the emergency disks. When booting the greyed, mixed up, win98 logo comes up for a while. If you wait long enough the system does finish booting and everything is fine. Does anyone have any idea why the DOS scan crashes the system? What is the deal with the greyed, mixed up, win98 logo screen? Could it be that the DOS scan is trying to access the non-existant A drive which in turn causes the IO to crash?

I'm us1ng Fix-it Utilities 3.0 (On Track). It's anti-virus program is "on demand". Which means it doesn't run all the time.....it'll only ckeck files, folders or drives when you tell it to. Doing it this way doesn't slow down your computer. It has a free web-update which has new virus definitions available every few days. The whole utility suite is first-class, and highly rated. Over the years Norton stuff has caused me much grief.
If your windows installation is running in Compatibility Mode, then you have driver problem or other conflict. Your system will run much faster when 'configured for optimum performance' (window's message that all is well) Email me if you need additional information.
