The Vegas Free Mesh Network is up!

The first Las Vegas area MeshNode is up!

It's at the south west end of town, near Blue Diamond Rd (hwy 160) and Rainbow Bl.

Look for SSID "VegasFreeMesh" on Channel 11

It's got about a 1/2 mile range right now with a unmodified Linksys WUSB11 from fry's on sale for $40, see the link below for pics of the low cost antenna box.

Try to connect and let me know if you need any technical help setting up your own MeshNode. Point your directional this way if you have one!

I have a few more sites planned around town. If you can get one working in your area it would help!

Later on I will be playing around with low cost directional antennas and a second wireless device/port to provide a temporary way to interconnect some of these nodes.

Just a tip from experience,

Some PVC and plastic materials are not "RF Transparent" and may cause signal loss.

One quick way to check is place a small scrap piece in a microwave oven and try and bake it for a few seconds. Monitor it closely!
If it gets HOT it's not good for antennas...

You don't need any special software beyond the normal wireless stuff that comes with any 802.11b (11Mb/s) wireless adaptor to connect to a meshnode.
Doesn't matter if you use Linux or Windows. The meshnode will give you a IP and other network info via DHCP like any other wireless access point.
It would be good to become another meshnode in the network, but just to test your range or see what you can do, just click on the SSID "VegasFreeMesh", it should show up as channel 11 and "Ad-Hoc" mode.
In windows there's a program called "winipcfg" that will force a DHCP request when you push a button. More info here, including NT and 2000:

Change the selection to whatever wireless adaptor you are using.
On Linux, the "pump" program helps, on Mandrake or RedHat use "urpmi pump" to find and install it. You should also have the "wireless-tools" package installed. You can then use "iwconfig" to change the channel, or check settings. "ifconfig" should also show you some info. Both commands have man pages.

I'm over by el capitan and cheyenne, but I don't *have* my own wireless internet as of yet. -Read: jacking the neighbors' because my parents actually thought parental-controlling aol would stop me- However as soon as I get my own I would be glad to help out.

Does anyone have nodes over this way that you know of? I would have no problem bouncing the signal with an antenna or four if I could find it.

Noticed in your design that you said you sealed the top but pressure-fit the bottom. I realize that Vegas is abnormally dry, but that leaves a lip around the bottom cap that could allow seepage in. Did you do anything at bottom-of-case to ensure drainage, like drilling in a small hole?

Beyond that, very cool. I've got an old/unused 11 that I'm going to try this with. And next time I'm down in Vegas, I'll have to see if you're still online (spent a big chunk of last spring there, hopping between Summerlin and an office on Durango and Flamingo).
