Took a chance the other day and ordered a Linksys WMP55AG desktop wireless card.
Based on the picture I figured it's just like the orginal WMP11 wireless adapter which had a mini-pci card in it before the cheap'ened the design and made it non-removal.

Cool part is that the antenna is the standard mini socket just like what is found on the Lucent & Cisco mini-pci and found on most other mini-pci wireless adapters.

I threw togather a few pictures... check them out.... I resized the pictures, the orginals are about twice as large in case you want to right click and save them to your local computer.

These cards aren't Lucent, but they are 2.4 & 5 Ghz 802.11a 802.11b and Wireless G supporting 128 bit encryption. for the rpice you cant beat it and I expect that eventually Linksys will switch to the cheaper manufacturing process were the card can't be removed. Get'em while their hot !!!

FCC "asked" Linksys to stop selling these....

It's a "Signel booster" for their access points... A creative person possibly could "fix" one to allow better distance in their 2.4 Ghz wireless network.... They are on eBay for anywhere from $99 to $169, you can't buy these anymore in standard retail or from Linksys, they might be useful....

Well I take that back about buying the LinkSys signal booster in retail, I picked up one at Circuit City today for $99, my greedy inner child is thinking about selling on it on eBay,but geeky older child wants to hack it into my access point I'm running at home..... CC had a another one left and if the clerk knew anything, claimed that it was listed as a discontinued item and they wer not restocking that item.

Yea, according to CompuUSA's store finder; it's available in all the stores in Missouri too. I went back to CC last night and bought the last one with the idea of possibly modifing one for the AP I have in the house and then sell the other to pay for it.

I'm a little amazed by the FCC even allowing Linksys to market this in the first place as all the details and tech info I have found on it implies that it's amplifies both sending and receiving signal which is generally a no-no as the amp's I use on the unlicensed 2.4ghz WAN equipment at are required to be only receiver amps and not transmitting amps. I doubt that Linksys will ever bring it back onto the market since it will be very difficult for them to comply with the FCC regulations as with an external signal booster, it's hard to make work with only the equipment designated. My house is the highest house in my area and I have a couple extra 12 Db Yagee antennas at work, with this setup I could almost provide ISP service for half my subdivision!! (that would kill the bandwith on cable modem!!!).

but beware of fcc do not underestimate their power they can detect illegal radio signals and trianglate the location and can confiscate your equipment too just because it is unlicensed power above 100mw and 100mw or less is ok

Actually you can have an EIRP , or total wattage out of the antenna ,with no license, of 1 watt so a pretty long distance can be acheived.
Check this place out if your interested in WLAN.

I'm writing this sitting in my truck at a local mall parking lot with my Averatec 3150H mini laptop and salvaged Xi325 wireless pc card.

Free UNSECURE wireless internet access is available here. AWESOME downloads speeds compared to my 56k dialup! 200 kbs average when mall is closed

Anyway stumbled across a different type of Wi-Fi finder..

Ref last post^

The early radio shack "Micronta" S-Band radar detectors (<1968?) could have been used as a antenna tuner. I built one of these from a Radio shack kit when I was a young teen. The local Police chief even helped me test it using a Kustom signals 2 piece vehicle mounted radar at the police station.

I wish I could fine one of these again...
Basically they were a gun diode in a waveguide and horn antenna with a few transistors mounted on a separate pcb. A lamp and simple audio alarm on the front panel.
There was a plastic reverse horn antenna sticking out from the waveguide on the back.

Am I showning my age yet...

HA HA HA - not funny

Just because you can't see, smell or touch someting doesn't mean it can't hurt you.
IT CAN HURT YOU.

These are microwave transceivers.
IF INTENSE ENOUGH microwaves do nasty things to humans. The greater the transmission power, the greater the risk. (intensity is inverse to square of distance).

cause cancer - YES breaks apart DNA, see also lukemia
developmental toxicity - Kind of - DNA damamge to infants and children (lots of growing) is more likely to cause problems
male pattern baldness - I though it cured it (not that is a good cure)
1) tesiticals especially don't like microwaves - testicular cancer
2) damage a single strand of DNA in 1 sperm and the whole kid comes out wrong.
pregnant women - YES
women who have been pregnant - silly
women who may some day become pregnant - female sex organs are more vunerable than some other parts of the body - but it is men, whose sex organs are on the outside who need to be most careful.

Keep away from children and household pets - YES - YES - Most home wireless ethernet come with warnings to stay 20cm away - most kids don't respect/understand what they cannot perceive (invisible waves) and pets can't understand - it is your job to protect both. If you raise the power know how to protect them.

For outdoor use only - GOOD IDEA - if at regular power 20cm is recommended and you increase the power you increase the dangerous distance ( by 1/sqaure - so 4xtimes power = 2xdistance).

I know the DMCA sux, and seems to exist for all the wrong reasons, but...

The FCC regulates transceiver for GOOD REASON. They really are protecting you. If you can't understand that, and aquaint yourself with the risks, and reasonable precautions, you shouldn't mess about with these things (which isn't to say if you do, you should).

Whatever,
VERY GOOD INFO!

The eyes are also very sensitive to microwave radiation.

Several years ago many of the police that used handheld radar guns came up testical cancer due to the fact when they observed a violator they placed the radar gun in there lap then drove in purcuit unknowning it was still transmitting RF.

100mw 10 or 24 ghz gunplexer with approx 22dbi conical horn antenna in there crotch~! Slow roasted nuts!

I have a Network Security Question that you might be able to answer or direct me to the person(s) that can help me.

During the spring quarter 2004 I took the Advanced Network Security class at Northwestern University. And I worked on a security project that has gained the interest of the CBS 2 Chicago investigative unit. The project is entitled "Often Over Looked Mission Critical
Details Related to Large Scale Wireless Deployment Initiatives".

By pure accident I compromised a large City of Chicago institution over the 2003-2004 Christmas break. Knowing that I was going to take Advance Network Security during the spring 2004 quarter, I did not tell anyone what I was up to until February 2004. During my research for this project I have compromised other large Chicagoland institutions. The information that I have obtained will leave you thinking that this cant be true and will have the steam rising out Mayor Daley's ears. I will explain what City institutions I am talking about later when you return my E-mail.

For now, I would just like to know if anyone out there has penetrated the following networks and obtained any confidential data or left back doors to the following networks. Chicago Public Schools, City of Chicago, Chicago Police or Cook County.

I can send you a copy of the project if that will help.

Whoa dude...

I for one am not able to help you. I WANT TO MAKE IT VERY CLEAR I DO NOT KNOW OR want to know how to hack into networks nor do I know anyone who does. I'm just a hobbyist who likes to tinker with, Salvage, Repair and rebuild electronic gadjets. I'm 49 yrs old, in mid life retirement and enjoy my freedom A LOT!
