AP vs. Build your own

Anyone have a good reccomendation on buying an access point/wireless router vs. making one with an old machine using a PCI NIC and a PCI Wireless Card?

Also, what PCI card is the best?

I've been reading sour reviews all over the net and can't tell if the ppl. are idiots or if the products really suck.

Pardon me, what is an Access Point (AP)? Is it different from a router? If so, what are the differences?

In this context, non-IT people usually say 'router' when they mean AP (Access Point).
