Can't get easyrider prompt
What have I missed?

I have a Webpal that works okay in "normal" mode (boots to startup screen, etc), and an RS-232 converter that's worked before, and appears to be working now.

If I power up/reset the Webpal without S2 pressed, it eventually spits out an X-ON (0x11) on the serial port (which minicom, curiously, displays as a ".").

If I reset with S2 pressed, the video comes up blank, the yellow LED stays off, and I get nothing out the serial port.

The CTS input to the Webpal is at a nominal 5V with the RS-232 cable disconnected, and a nominal 0V when connected to the PC.

I cut JP1, after reading a note about that here, but that had no effect.

I put a scope on the TxD output from the Webpal, and did a few reset cycles, but didn't see any wiggling that suggested the prompt was being sent.

Is there some other action that's needed to persuade the debugger to talk that I overlooked?

Thanks,

Ran

Have you tried running gdb? I remember the '.' was all I used to see when using minicom. I just flashed two more chips from scratch with no problems. Be sure that you have the baud rate set correctly, I was having problems with it changing after exiting gdb and running wpflash.

Have you tried running gdb?

Um, no, actually I haven't.

I was trying to verify the basic operation before adding the complication of gdb, and assumed that the prompt would show up on any old terminal attached to the "debug" port.

That's what I "missed".

Thanks,

Well, it definitely helps to wire up the correct connector

I'm not sure how, but I seem to have gotten the notion into my head that I was supposed to use J10, not J11. When I started triple-checking against the webpal schematic, I noticed that JP1 has nothing to do with J10, and realized I'd taken a wrong turn very early on.

Once I got connected to the right port, I started seeing the easyrider prompt, even with minicom.

Another lesson learned during this adventure: the walls don't have ears, but they do have good grounding

It's very easy to short part of a home-made adapter to the chassis, or one of the large expanses of ground plane on the board. I was lucky: apparently, the voltage regulator went into shutdown, and came back to life after it had cooled off. But I hadn't even noticed, until the webpal suddenly stopped working, what I had done.
