Found this on the web, gonna whip one up tomorrow

Hey, I found this online, and since PCMCIA-CF adapters are cheap (about $5 shipped check pricewatch), I have one on hand, and the cheapest IDE-CF's I found were $30+s&h... Gonna whip one up tomorrow & test it out in the webpal.

Let's just say this, sure, it was only about $7 in materials (which I already had laying around) but at 9 hours of labor to put it together (verify pins with meter, solder, re-verify, once all pins are done, re-check everything to be sure there are no bridges or otherwise "typical-for-me" solder jobs, package) I doubt it was worth it ;) Sure, it works, it's hellaugly, and I found adapters at axiontech (CORPSYS CF2IDE) for $19 - I'm gonna order a few next patday & save me this hassle all over again ;)

You forget the satisfaction of having done it yourself. :)
I made my RS232 level converter for the webpal with surface mount components to save space. Now that was painful. Here's a picture before I cleaned up the flux (about 1x1 inches; the chip is 3x3mm):

Yeowch - I bow to your mastery ;) Lets just say I wouldn't DARE post a pic of my.. creation.. yeah, that's it
.. But, it works, it's all taped up and housed inside an old plastic PCMCIA transport case so I don't have to see my ugly soldering :D

CSC sells those adapters direct, and the price goes down to $12 when you buy 10 (not sure what they charge for shipping). Anyone interested in a group buy?

At that price I'd be willing to take 3.

Okay, I'll wait a few days to see whether there's enough interest to justify buying more than 10 (I know I want 2 or 3, and don't mind keeping a couple around for new arrivals to the Webpal Hackers Family), and place the order.

If you're in a hurry for one, Weird Stuff had some behind the checkout counter marked $30 when I was out there about a week ago. They took $25 when I suggested that I'd be willing to accept the inconvenience of mail order to get a $20 price

Unfortunately, I can't tell you which brand it is, because I haven't figured out which box it got packed in for the trip back to AZ

If anybody has one of the ACS units made for a laptop drive connector, and would like to swap for one of the standard units, drop me an email: I lucked into an iopener at a thrift store, and I'm thinking about setting it up as a car computer.

The adapters are supposed to arrive mid-to-late next week, at a cost of $13.15 each with postage.

Since I only heard from Dave and Bill, I didn't order extras.

If either of you wants to save $3 in postage by spending $5 for gas , I'll be in San Jose in two weeks: the trailer wasn't quite big enough to empty both storage lockers, so I need to make a second trip. I'm timing it to enable me to hit the September Foothill swap (will that one be in Mountain View due to the College parking lot repaving, too?), which should make a good venue for meeting.

Drop me an email, and let me know what your preferences are.

It would be easier if you ship to me. Please let me know the total with shipping and how you would like payment.

Thanks

Ran,

I sent an email at your netgate address, but I haven't heard back from you.
If that email addresss isn't good anymore, email me at the same ID as I use here at
pacbell.net and I'll send you information on where to send the adapters.

The swap meet location appears to
still be in Sunnyvale. Here is a web page for the swap meet:
