The reason I ask this question here is that its guts are almost exactly the same as those of the Webpal. The same CPU, TV-out encoder ...etc. So it should be hackable to some extent. Anyone having already done the first steps?

That looked like a stylish rig. I dare anyone out there to get up the bolz and tell us what can be done with any wtv boxes. They are probably going to be grandfathered this spring, because of ulttv. There were a few Sony and PhilMag boxes with harddrives going for cheeps. Why all the hush hush over these wtv's? Fraid beeg brutha W.G.III weel krush you 2 powda?

It's pretty unlikely that any of us have much information that can currently help. The folks who wrote custom linux bootloaders might give you some pointers on how to get an image up and running, but not knowing how they've got the rom stored (another flash simm? a disk on chip? socket/soldered chip?)
The other problem that comes to mind is that what progress has come of the webpal thus far has relied on the existance of the serial header. If someone were to pick up one of these units, it would go a long way toward a hack if it could be ripped open and poked at.
