Uhm... lol... only if you had the source code and then you would have to spend a long time porting it.
Whats wrong with linux? X isnt linux its just a program, if you want a command line just use busybox or bash.

the only reason i want dos or windows is because dos would run faster on this old 50mhz computer!
I WOULD use linux if i knew for sure how to get X working - and i'm not very good at linux code. MABYE if someone could program linux and X on it for me I might just pay them. I don't appreciate getting 'flamed'.

by the way,Vit_sfba I have some words for you also - i dislike windows - but it just runs faster on a 386 (50mhz)
Vit_sfba, don't go around getting mad.

thankx

The Webpal does not contain a 386 or other x86 processor. It uses a CLPS7500 which uses the ARM instruction set. Thus, running DOS or Windows 3.x on it is impossible since Microsoft did not support the ARM instruction set for those OSs. In addition, any applications for those OSs would also require the x86 instruction set and thus not work.

BTW, tylerfixer, AFAIK, win98 or win95 does not run on 386 with any acceptable speed.

Now, DOS will give you the same command line as Linux w/o X, so what's the matter? Yes, DOS would be slightly faster on 50MHz machine, as it's not an operating system speaking strictly, but the difference is unnoticeable. I used to run both on 486DX266.
OTOH, try to run any serious software on DOS and you'll see, it's impossible w/o dos-extender. And it's way slower also due to stupid 16/32 bit models most these extenders have.

Anyway, it's a different machine, forget about dos. Period.

Thx,
Vit.

Actually he asked how to "load" dos onto his webpal.. Maybe we should help him ;)
Anyway, Microfsck sent me a letter asking me to make sure my business licences were legal..
I slaped a tux sticker on it and put return to sender :P
Lets see how they like it.

If somebody could give me the name of a website that would give me step by step instructions,
i will try linux - but - will KDE or GNOME or another frontend like microwindows work?

OR can somebody tell me how to upgrade the webpal software to the ethernet version without a modem?
I just can't get it to connect.
Firmware updates appreciated.

-thanx tylerfixer...

I do not think you'll ever find upgrade for Webpal's own firmware, as the comany that made it is dead and they did not open it's source before dying.

As for instructions, you can send your Webpal flash chip to me, or to Bill, plus a stamped and addressed envelope, so we can send it back to you after reflashing. Other instructions you can find on Bill's excellent page http://webpal.bigbrd.com/
Nowadays you can find 2GB harddisk for about $20 and network card, compatible with current Webpal Linux software for about $5. That should be enough for your purposes. Also, you'll need additional memory, if you do not want to mess with hardware, that'll be 16MB 72pin simm.

As for graphics, like X, it will work eventually, only nobody can give you a guarantee or dates, as we're doing this in our own spare time when it fits.
