IDE interface questions

I recently acquired a couple of Webpals on clearance. Through prior existing board errors and/or my own erros in not recognizing the correct orientation of the IDE connector on at least one of the motherboards, both exhibit the same problem (the third doesnt appear to do anything linux or webpalwise, but it may be DOA).... any IDE drive plugged in will not spin up if it is plugged into the webpal. If it is not plugged in the (known good) drive(s) will spin up as expected. This behaviour occors even after the U2-pin10 surgery (although not necessary since the board is of a revision with the 665GT.) So, did I somehow manage to burn out the super-IO chip by plugging the IDE connector backwards (I've never seen this happen on any PC-AT since the time when connectors were not polarized), or is there something else not clipped, cut or otherwise needed to enable IDE, or are all the boards (these are from Surplus Computers) suspect duds ? Additionally the ethernet, while recognised gives timeouts and sporadic hex code error "chirping" and ping times greater than alpha-centauri :). I'm suspecting that unfortunately I may have burnt out the SuperIO chip and the board offers no "oops" protection, however strange this seems to be. Thanks in advance for any help.

I just tried the cable backwards on the same board you mentioned for sake of argument, and no problem. I've aquired many boards from Surplus Computers and havent had any problems as of yet (except for the battery leaking all over the place) :P
The only thing I can suggest is to double check the chip rev, the pin that
needs lifted it P11, I noticed you said P10.. maybe just a typo.
BTW: If you look at the back of the board you can see the ide P1.

Hmm, I am mystified. Yes, I made a typo, I lifted the pins as described at http://webpal.bigbrd.com/idebug.jpg but yes, it's pin 11 (lower left hand corner looking towards the ISA as in the picture.) Although it's 665GT so superflous. (I got the ROM chip flashed the other week by Bill, so the image should be whatever is standard at the moment for the webpal) I can only think that the same wacky problem occurred on both boards, perhaps inadvertently hotplugging the drive(s) or the like. I can't see how this would make an error as there is only TTL level control running on 3.5" IDE cables but who knows. In any event I guess for lack of any other things wrong, I have functional busybox systems with absolutely no I/O plus an assortment of newcom doorstops including keyboards and remotes <g> :)

I've plugged in my IDE cables backwards numerous times and didn't blow up anything so this is strange. I did mess up the
serial interface on one of my boards (it was my only Vers .01 board at the time).

Do you see any IDE / hda messages during bootup (could do a dmesg after boot to see them all ) ? Could you have the drives
jumpered so they don't start up until they are accessed the first time ? I don't know enough about the IDE interface to
know how the drive motor control works, but you might investigate that and see what pin it uses. Remember that I only
have 1 working Vers 01 board and all my development is on the other boards
so there could also be some sort of bug in the bootstrap or linux with respect to these boards.
I might not be initializing everything correctly.
