Hello,
I am thinking about buying a WebPal.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3011558457&category=3321
I want to know if it can still be modified for Linux and how much trouble an cost there is associated with it. You can e-mail me if you wish. Thanks.

Cheapest stuff I've been able to find so far:

~$16 for 64MB of RAM
~$15 for 3GB harddisk
~$1.5 for HDD cable

Beside that you'll need at least to reprogram
it's internal FLASH, and to modify it's board
in order to enable it to address up to 64MB
of RAM. As is it can only address 16MB,
that's not enough, at least for me, and, as
I have seen, this modification is nontrivial,
if you do not have good experience in
soldering.

Vit.

My webpal is running 32MB of 2K refresh EDO from www.kahlon.com (for $8) without problem, it shows up as 2 banks of 16m, and requires no mods. Assuming you get someone else to program the flash (BigBrd was kind enough to do it for me) the only soldering job required is a 5v lead for power (if you're adding a laptop HDD) which is a VERY easy job.

The key being 2K refresh EDO - 4k aren't compatible without a PITA solder job..

I didn't think the solder job (drill one hole, lift and solder one pin, solder to one pad) that difficult at all. Certainly not a PITA, at least if you've had just a little experience with fine pitch devices.

I think I gave $9 each for my 64MB simms.

Ok, lemme rephrase, PITA for the shaking hands of a caffeine-junkie like myself >:) Still, 32MB is plenty for my uses (again, as a "toy" - it gets taken outta the closet & played with when I have nothing better to do)
