Microwindows on Webpal
It works

I have microwindows/nano-x running on the webpal with framebuffer (no X). This little box plays a fairly decent game of chess!! I am now working on getting viewml (a web browser) to run. Hopefully I will be able boot and run this without a hard drive.

One problem I have with the webpal is that the screen is set to 60 lines per page at boot. Is there some way to change this? My eyes are getting tired from looking at it all day (or maybe I'm just getting old!)

Good luck. The more I've played with the built in browser and e-mail program, the more I'm beginning to realize what a piece of crap the built-in software is, at least the version that I have. I've discovered at least half-a-dozen problems with the built in apps. I've run across web pages that consistently lock it up, reboot it, or just take forever to render the text ("formatting" is what the WebPal calls it). After changing the time server from the default to one that worked, I sent an e-mail to myself to test the time function. WebPal's e-mail program mangled the headers by putting the date in the body of the message. Trying to retrieve that e-mail would consistently re-boot the WebPal.

I remember reading references to a later, 2MB only update. I don't know if it resolved some of the issues with this thing or not, but it would be nice to have an actual browser that works on it. :) I like the keyboard, but the mouse/remote could use a bit of work... :) I also see on the MicroWindows web page that the latest version supports rdesktop, which would make it useful as a WinTerm as well. Maybe with Linux we can actually get this thing doing something like what it was intended for. :)

I presume you're putting all of this in the flash rom since you mention booting and running without a hard drive. Do you have the 1MB or 2MB flash rom? How much room is left to play in after getting BigBird's linux kernel loaded into flash rom?

My first attempt to get viewml working ends with a seg fault. I downloaded and built the libwww and the flnx. They both seem to be working correctly. I guess I will be jumping into the code to find the problem.

I have the 1mb flash with 32mb ram and I am planning on downloading the needed files from a ftp server using wget each time the webpal boots. For development I have a laptop hard drive mounted in the webpal. There is basically no room left on the 1mb flash because bigbrd used busybox which takes up most of the cramfs space. I have been able to add a few commands that I needed. I think that with all of the microwindows libraries there will not be enough room in flash.

I didn't get viewml running but the problem was in the libwww. I tried downloading it from cvs, but then spring arrived and I have been enjoying the outdoors. I will start working on webpal stuff again soon. If you want to see my progress, I post it at: http://justdave.mine.nu/webpal
