WARNING - BIOS POWER MANAGMENT
Turning on the Power Managment may have severe consequences!

New MessageWARNING - BIOS POWER MANAGMENT (modified 0 times) Crackedup
This is not a bogus post! Please read on:

About 15 mins ago I decided to enable the power sacving features in the bios. I chose the user defined option and changed the suspend mode to 60 mins and the turn off HD mode to 60 mins also. Well, I was in Windows 98 (yeah it sucks) after the change and I noticed that my CPU FAN HAD BEGUN SPINNING ON AND OFF. The spinning would start as I opened a window on the screen or gave a command through the keyboard/mouse! It would actually come to as complete halt if there was no on-screen activity!
This is perhaps the most bizarre post on this board?

I wanted to warn others of this potential problem. I have since disabled all power saving modes in the bios and have had no further problems with the CPU fan - Just as well I had the case off!

Anyone else able to duplicate this? - I didn't really want to have it happen again.

I had a similar experience. I turned power saving on. After a few minutes of inactivity the CPU fan turned off. When I typed or moved the mouse, the CPU fan turned back on. The fan turned off again after a few minutes of inactivity.

I got worried because the box was getting hot (probably from the power supply which keeps working full power). I didn't want to risk frying the CPU so I turned all the power saving features back off. All this was with the stock QNX system from the DiskOnChip.

I plan to test the CPU temperature with the power saving features on but I haven't gotten to it yet.

It seems to me that the power saving features wouldn't do much because the power supply keeps running as it always does. The CPU fan turns off and the CPU probably slows down (or at least the BIOS says it should or the CPU would fry) but I can't imagine that any of this would affect the amount of power that the box pulls from the AC outlet. It seems to me that the only power saving features that would have much affect would be one that turns off your monitor or spin down the hard disk.

Any thoughts?

The CPU has a thermometer on it and turns off the fan when it is not needed. This action is normal and common in most newer machines.

Just seems wierd that the fan would turn on and off with the movement of stuff on the screen - is it that sensitive?
