Maybe I am dense, but I have to know why so many people are trying to solder on the resistors? Aint a ide card good enough?

Because the resistors connect the motherboard IDE controller to the IDE connector. Without the resistors (or something bridging the pads on the motherboard) no signal can get to the IDE connector.
