$199.00. I told them that I have seen it
at other places for 50 bucks, but they still
said $199.00...I would look and see if there
is an in store display that says 49.95, but
then I would have to drive 150 miles

If anyone is in St. Louis area, please give

I went into Comp USA and looked for the WebSurfer. Couldn't find it. Showed the web printout to the guy at the upgrade counter and asked him where they are. He found one for me. I went to the cash register and they rang up $211 and some change. I showed him the web page printout. He called his boss. His boss took the printout and disappeared into the general office for about 15 minutes. When he came out he said they would honor the price. He said that they will be selling for $49.99 in the future but they will require you to sign up for the internet service. He said the web site "jumped the gun".

These guys know about the i-opener hacking. They still have an i-opener demo model on display but won't sell it to me!

Cheers!

Interesting story
Went to CUSA East Lansing. Got confirmation on price. Bought one, no prob. Noticed a contract attached after I left the store, with a sticker saying: sign before leaving store. Friend goes back in to buy one, manager confronts him and mentions TOS. No luck. Guess I'm the only one who will get one out of the E. Lansing store. We shoulda bought 2 at once. :( oh well.

New MessageRE:You got one? Post here- where, TOS? No/yes? Limit? (modified 0 times) MoTLD
Where: Richmond, VA

TOS: Nope, though the salesman (_very_ helpful guy) hadn't heard of the $49 special, and his manager (after 20 mins in the back room) said that it was supposed to require a 2 year contract, but that the store hadn't been given all of that info so the $49 deal wasn't even supposed to be in effect yet. But, luckily, the mgr. said to go ahead and sell me as many as I wanted at $49. (Be patient and courteous, and they might cut you some slack :)

Limit: Just stock on hand, apparently. They were supposed to have 10 of 'em, but the salesman searched high and low and could only find 4. I got those plus the display model (he even threw in some cables since he couldn't find the box for it) and gave him my first name and phone number (on a scrap of paper, not in the computer, of course) in case he found the rest, but he said that the $49 without a contract would probably only last as long as his mgr. was in a good mood ;)

Sign: Nope, just the small $199 sign and not much of a display, either.

Comments: Cash 'n' carry, of course. They didn't even ask me for my name and address. Go figure.

Also, another salesman suggested that I might try the IOpener, since they couldn't find as many WebSurfers as I wanted. The salesman who was helping me told him that they weren't selling them anymore because "they've got USB and a parallel port and all you have to do is flash the BIOS and add a hard drive to make a real computer out of it, so the company's losing their shirts", at which point I just looked quizzical and kept my mouth shut, so obviously they know about the IOpener hack, or at least this guy does. With him knowing about flashing the BIOS, it wouldn't surprise me if he knows exactly what I have in mind for these WebSurfers...and maybe has an IO and/or a WebSurfer at home himself ;)

Comments: PAID CASH! i went to the casher, and she punched in the number since it wasn't letting her scan it for some reason, and it showed up at $199.00, so i whipped out my webpage printout, and she looked at it, and changed the price, she didn't ask me any questions, didn't check to see if it was true, nothing! Isn't Earthlink primarily a West coast deal? I know they have dialups nationwide, but the WC is their "home grounds". Has anybody in the Eastern part of the state seen the special offer sign? I'm thinking that the $49 deal is a regional (not national) promo and that not all regions are in on it (yet).

On a different note: Anybody know where to get a 32meg (or larger) Disk-On-Chip? Prices?

We said we didn't want just the keyboard, so she called her manager and briefly explained the situation. He obviously wasn't too interested and agreed to sell us one each at the 49.99. Tried at the Dallas Park Lane store. General Mgr refused to honor the price and claimed the websites "were all a mistake" and spouted garbage about "regional pricing". When I showed him the pic of the floor sign on the opening page, he claimed it was a lie! What a jerk! This is customer service? Of course this has been followed with letters to the cc'd to the BBB, CUSA Corporate, and the state attorney general for false advertising and deception.

Bought one Cash, Earthlink bought Mindspring this winter and if you East coast types aint heard of them then you haven't been off of AOL for very long. My point is that Earthlink (actually Sprint/earthlink/mindspring) is not a regional thing, unless you consider the continental US "regional".

SpdRcr5g - the point I was trying to make isn't that Earthlink/Mindspring only does business on the West Coast (guess the missed the "I know their national but..." part of the post), but that this may be a *REGIONAL OFFER* - only some stores in a certain region - are getting the price break/special offer systems. Somebody at CompUSA goofed and put up the $49 price on the web page without a disclaimer, and now they're paying.

Sheesh, learn to read, OK?

Went again in the afternoon, checked stock, got manager to approve with print out before asking for item. The mananger "David" said his colleagues knows about the price and it's correct.
Maybe they are coming out with Web Surfer "Ultra" or something and dumping their current inventory now.

Still waiting for my I-opener from CC, this should hold me over for a while.

Walked in to the Beachwood, Ohio Compusa tonight and looked around. They weren't with the PCs, so I asked. The guys were clueless but they said ask at the upgrade desk. I walked over there and they had... an i-Opener! I got all excited and asked the guy if they were in stock. Unfortunately, none and they won't sell the floor model. Anyways, he took the WebSurfer sku and said they're in stock - over by the DVDs. Took me a while to find them - no sign, or anything, just a big stack of boxes clearly labeled $49.99. They also had the TOS stuck to the side and the IMPORTANT sticker. I took the box up to the counter and the guy scanned everything on it but couldn't come up w/ a valid UPC. So I pulled out my printout and gave him the SKU, and it rang up at $199. I showed him the price, he took the printout and the box to the manager. A few minutes later the manager came out and did a price override on the register. Nobody said much, nobody did anything about the TOS. I walked out, and am getting ready to open it up right now!

No luck at the Tacoma, WA store. They told me that is how they get people into the store, and would not honor the price even if I brought in the a print out of the page. Went to Southcenter store picked up three, the scanner would not read so the cashier had to manually type in the barcode and write down the serial numbers so it took a few minutes but other than that no problem. Paid cash. As of 5pm they had maybe 10 left from the floor display where I got my three. Apparently there was no limit...a sales guy was showing one to a customer and I had to ask him to move so that I could get mine. I took three and he told me to take as many as I liked.

I am told that as of 5pm there are 10-12 left. I heard there was no problem there other than they have to manually write down the serial numbers and manually enter the barcode numbers into the register. I understand the price came up as $49.99. Customers there are not being asked to sign the tos.

Tacoma, WA will not honor the ad.

A major hassle, but well worth it! Cashier rang two up at $400+tax... I pulled out the web ad... cashier called manager... he disappeared for a telcon then said okay.

Cashier started ringing me up again when manager noticed the TOS, said I had to sign it. I told him that no TOS was mentioned in the ad and if one was required, that should have been mentioned! He disappeared into the back room again for a LONG time. While he was gone, I got annoyed and went back and picked up a third machine (PITA penalty). Figure I'll use one on each TV and the third as a server...

Manager finally came out and said to ring them up... ka-ching!

WHERE: Chicagoland

TOS: About 12 on the floor, just sitting there. 3 didn't even HAVE the TOS sticker and/or the contract baggie stuck on them, so I took two of those boxes. Since they had no idea what a TOS was even about, you could have just torn em off anyhow. Or left em on. They aren't even that noticeable.

PRICE: Sign said $199. I flashed the web page print out and the young manager said "I don't know how they're doing it, but yeah that's the price then..." Paid cash. After getting home I noticed they gave me to much change, so total price after tax for each unit was like $43. What boneheads.

LIMIT: Not even. I could have walked out with a dozen of them if I was so inclined (I'm not really sure why you'd want more than 1 or 2, if you do and are not an ebayer, ask yourself what the heck you're doing and if you're just being made giddy by the price).

OTHER: One of my units has obviously had a previous owner (his full name is right on the screen). It even gives me the option to connect using his account, but of course I will not do so. I assume he bought this sucker at the original $199 and returned it. I should go back and get an open box discount hehehe j/k.

CONCLUSION: It's a pretty sweet box. Pointing device beats my IO's. Fan noise is rude n' crude, however. One unit powered on sounding like a chainsaw with a 2 cycle engine, but quieted down some after it got spinnin'. I imagine a fan replacement would be simple enough, but it's not really horrible enough to warrant that. Clarity on the TV acually is not bad, and on a big TV, this would be super for browsing the web and shooting off emails from the couch. Audio outs make it perfectly suited for the MP3 solution. Can't wait to hack mine into super cool (and super cheap) stereo component.

Advice to those who faced the TOS: Don't be
disheartened. If necessary, pay $199 and take
a unit. Then go search for another CompUSA
which does not enforce the TOS.

I went to Santa Clara first. No TOS, but sold
out a few minutes before I reached. Bad Luck.
Drove like crazy to Blossom Hill. 3 in stock,
but TOS enforced. Not all their store managers are dumb Bad luck, again. Did I
give up? No! Drove like crazy to San Bruno.
4 in stock, no TOS !!! Picked up two, left
two for some lucky people (I felt a warm
fuzzy that overcame my greed. Some of it,
anyway).

Moral of the story: Be persistent. Try, try,
try again. You will not always be lucky,
but don't be disheartened. Live and let live.

I don't understand why some say some stores seem to raise a fuss over some contract.
I just bought one more(This is my 4th one)from the MTLK TERR C-USA here in Seattle and just gave the cashier the SKU# and it came up $ 49.99 no mention of contract or nothing
There are about 9 left.....yesterday there was 12 after I was done.....I figured they would be just about sold out by now....
I really don't know what I'm going to do with "2" of the "4" but felt better to have than not to have...Maybe I'll return the 2 later on after things settle down and I have time to think about it. but then they do have some cool parts.....

Wish more i-Openers would show up! Still waiting for one more...

Manager disappears into back, returns after ~10 minutes and says yep, web page doesn't say anything about TOS. I start saying won't the websurfer call home and ask for all the info when its turned on... He says he doesn't know. Manager then says can I call my mother and get CC info. I say well, I could, but I still couldn't legally sign the contract. (!!!!) He says oh, you're right. Finally hes asks when am I giving it to her, I say mothers day, he says OK, if you bring back the TOS with my mother's info after I give the box to her, he says I can have it for $49.95! After much talk this morning they agreed to sell it to me for $49 instead of $199, but only if I filled out the contract.

Was taking with the manager (who wasn't a bad guy), and they said that all their remaining stock was being sent back to the manufacturer to prevent it from being used as a regular computer. The store had 5 in, I got them to hold one for me, but the rest were being sent back. I am going back this evening to try and get it without signing the contract. We shall see.

BTW, the web surfer has been removed from the CUSA web site.

I originally had an I-opener on order with CompUSA Mountlake Terrace, but now it seems that that is never going to happen. So I called there today to see if they had any WebSurfers, and if they can ship me one of those instead. No luck, they are sold out. So I called the Spokane location, BINGO 7 in stock. I say, can you ship me one of those, I am in Canada and Mountlake was going to get me one but they are sold out. He takes my info, and says ok, that will $199.99. I say, actually it shows up for $49.95 off of your web site. He says O.K. I will check with my boss, and ship it out. Well, he calls me back 15min later to tell me, I am sorry but we are unable to ship to Canada. Mountlake Terrace is able to ship to Canada because they have an exporters license, also the price is $199.99, unless you come in and sign the TOS, then we can sell it to you for $49.99. I say thank you anyways and hang up.

What I don't understand, I work for a computer chain in Canada, and I have shipped all over the world, and I don't know anything about any kind of exporters license. All I do is call up FedEX or UPS, give them the address and off it goes. I have shipped to both the US & Europe (even as far as Egypt) this way. Anyways, it seems that some stores are already catching on to the TOS, so it might not be long before the party is over.

As a side note, I have really been trying to get a hold of something like this for a while. I still have all the parts for the I-Opener, and I am out of ideas. I would be willing to pay $100US for one of these things, if anyone is will to part with one. I would be so greatful. My e-mail address is trueg@home.com.

Does anyone else have evidence that they have been pulling Websurfers from sales until the get the TOS squared away? They had about 11 of them left at my store when I left there last night, today I went back at noon time and there was none on the floor. I asked the counter person and they said they were out of stock so unless some enterprising EBayer raided the place this morning, Websurfer may have gotten wise and had them pulled from stock.

Comments: Sunday 4/30. Websurfer for $199. Web ad didn't help. Salesdroid obviously confused.
Salesdroid called manager: "Many people have been asking about an ad from compusa.com with substantially lower pricing than our sales price. What should I do?" ... <obviously downloading instructions from friendly manager here> ... Afterwards, salesdroid claimed that the compusa.com site was completely independent of the stores and the store would not honor the web price. Could not get droid to budge within first few minutes.

I knew that they were feeding me a line of crap but did not argue b/c I thought that I had my own solution to the problem.. Visiting my compusa friend this weekend...

Went over to their place and caught them up on the story. They hadn't heard about the WebSurfer until then but were willing to purchase at cost $25-$30 and sell to me (cash). They found that employees had two options: Pay $199, no strings OR Pay cost, sign TOS. Too late to work with the insiders on this deal.

Maybe next time... vx

Just got off the phone with a "technician" at the south austin store, he said they have been pulled "because of problems with the contract". Asked about buying even if I do sign a contract, he said no, said they should be back up for sale on Friday with a new TOS. Going to try engineering a salesdroid on my lunch break, will let you know how it turns out.

BTW, price on websurfer.com now listed as $249, and the whole mess about the contracts at the bottom. Looks like they have it sorted out by now. Just hope I can find a clueless person.

Went to my local "superstore", had about 10 in stock. Took a printout of the $49 ad (after a little creative cutting and pasting to look like an actual CompUSA web page). Employees didn't really know what to think - they spent about 15 minutes in a manager's office.

Came out with a contract in hand and said they wouldn't let a box out of the store without a contract and a credit card for the Earthlink service. They were referring to some kind of formal CompUSA letter that appears to have been sent to all store managers. Looks like the jig may be up on this one...

Oh well, got lucky at this store with an I-Opener a few weeks ago, can't complain too much.

He was nice but told me he couldn't let it leave the store without the form being filled out. I told him it was a present for a friend and that I'd be glad to put her info in but I didn't want to put in my cc#. No luck, didn't get one.

That was the worst feeling. I got there saw a whole crate of them behind their little tech desk but I couldn't convince the guy to part with one without a cc#. I showed him the website printout but nogo. I got somemore people who I am gonna send to try to work something out with the manager since the guy already denied me :( Im sending my sister next. She has a way of getting things her way.

Meet me infront of the Tacoma Mall CompUSA at 3:00am if you want a free web surfer. Plenty for all! :)
seriously though if we organized a thing like that we could get out of there with all of em in about a minute and be gone! Then they would learn not to oppress the hackers!

I spotted them behind the technology counter. Guy gave me a price of $199. I mentioned that the website said they were $49.99 and guy said that was with commitment. I mentioned that there was nothing of that sort listed on the website, and guy called manager. Manager said that they could not sell the units at all, that they were "defective" and being recalled. Could not persuade anyone to sell me a "defective" one

Comments: Walked in the store, didn't see them. I asked someone where they were, and no one knew where they moved to. After three people looked, they found one (why I didn't see a sign). They *claimed* it was the last one in the store (why I don't know the limit). I heard the manager tell the sales guy I needed to sign the contract, but he just handed it to me. I then went to the counter, they rang it up as $200. I then whipped out one of the cached copies of the website, and the cashier got a different manager to ring it up as $50. Paid cash, two cashiers looked at the box and didn't notice the "Customer must sign in store" sticker pointing at a contract in a bag taped to the box.

OK, now for the next obvious question:

For those of us unlucky enough to encounter TOS, are any of you folks so overstocked, you'd be willing to sell one to a fellow hardware hacker?

Please?

There are a few other from Rochester who posted here, for some reason they wern't as lucky :)

Comments: PAID CASH!

OK, the first guy we talked to said they were Recalled and they did not have any in stock. But I just punched the sku into one of there little terminals all around the store and that told me they had 9 in stock. So we headed down to the cust service counter to see what was going on. As I was waiting in line I saw a bunch of them behind the counter in a case, hey! there they are. I asked for one and they gladly sold it to me but it rang up as 199.99, so I pull out my printout from the website and they guy calls the manager. The manager doesn't seem to really know what is going on with this contract, I guess he has been getting a lot of emails from the company and they are all really confused. So after complaining a bit about the whole situation he gave it to us for 49.99, woohooo!! And yes I paid in cash :)

Yoiks! You got one in Rochester, NY? @#$%^&*!!!! When I tried, they were on the
floor next to some DVD players, so I grabbed one and went to the front checkouts,
only to be told I had to sign the contract to get one for $49. After looking at the
contract, I left empty-handed. I guess it's a matter of what manager is on duty
at the time, plus it looks like you managed to bypass the weenies at the commercial
desk who know the score and were instructing the checkout gals/guys about how to
handle the sale.

Really Grumpy, now.

molten3: go to FV store buy for $200 then go to other store and get price protection, say you didn't see the price and live too far away to go back. Do it 10 times. Wash, rinse.
Bring two friends. This way your box won't get all sticky from that 'shove'. If they don't go for it, return it for refund unopened.

My suggestion is get them ASAP from CUSA. The corporate office has been sending out warnings about leaving units on the sales floor, and not making people sign the TOS. It's only a matter of time before all the stores catch on. If you find a store that isn't enforcing the TOS, buy their stock and sell them on eBay. That's what I plan to do. I doubt I'll make myself sign the TOS when I ring mine up. If you are in the Chicago area, try the downtown store, they have them behind the counter, but the guys that work there are pretty cool.

I could legally have bailed right there, but I wanted to cause some fuss. He denied me them, after 20 minutes of arguing, he told a saleswoman no even though she said he had to do it. I called his Boss and his Boss's Boss, I have two now, and he's unhappy :) Just go to the top.

Most of these are spoken for by friends and family, but I still have a pang in my heart for an I-Opener. Anybody want to trade a pristine IO for a Websurfer, I'll even do the IDE mod for you (I'll be doing 5 others, what's one more?) Post an address if interested.
I'm sure this late in the game this sounds like crap, but what can I say? Sometimes living in a behind the times state isn't so bad after all. I can barely believe it myself.

Long Drawn Out Details Follow:

In Salt Lake City? There may be hope... Or maybe not anymore.
After my heartbreaking near miss at getting the last 2 pre-pay I-openers at Pheonix Metro Center (friend showed with my cash but found they had both been sold within the last 2 hours, DAMN!!!) I decided to try my luck for a Websurfer. I had printed the CompUSA ad before but then chucked it like an idiot I decided I wasn't interested, DOH! Thanks to Kinky's 50meg.com copy of the add (I love you man!!!), I was able to reprint it yesterday. I even edited the HTML to show the date current to 5/02 and printed another for emergency use only, since one call would prove me a liar. Turns out I didn't need the printout, or the bleeding heart story I had prepared about a 4 hour drive for Mother's day Presents.
Went to the Murray store first, last night just before closing. Looked around the place, saw an IO display, but no WebSurfers anywhere. Played dumb, looking for a WebTV thing... 2 sales guys had no clue, a third said "What about those Websurfers up on the back wall?" I looked up as a beam of light settled on about 15 of the gems perched up an a high shelf. I asked the sweet guy to let me look at one. In a second I had one in my hand, I was so astonished to even get to touch one this late in the game, I didn't stop him when he carried the ladder off. If I had planned ahead and took a cart back with me, I could have loaded up several. (The cart to make it less obvious what I had on the way to checkout.) I got the guy to come back, he got me a second one. Then the manager walked up. "What's that?" Man I almost cried. He said "Yeah we just got an E-mail a couple of days ago about these things. I have a form you have to fill out before we sell it to you, or else it is $200" I tried all the arguments, no luck. He insisted. "Fine, go get the form, I'll look it over and decide." He went off to his office to track one down. I walked up to the front (now 5 minutes after close) to a clerk who had no idea what we had been discussing in the back of the store. I set the two I had down. He rang them up, didn't scan at first, then punched some buttons and $49.99 came up. He totaled them, I whipped out the cash. He handed me a receipt. I looked around, the manager had not surfaced yet... So what the hell, I took my change and took my leave... I couldn't believe it! I don't think this store will be promising again unless you get one off the shelf, into a cart, avoid the managers eyes, and get to an uninformed checker. I'm sure the manager had a big talk with his people after he realized I'd stiffed him.
This morning at 9AM I hit the other SLC store (1830s 300w). Looked around forever, no signs, no display, no Websurfers in sight. I finally asked a stock guy. 'Any WebTV thingies?' He showed me a websurfer on display right next to an IO. No signs, no decriptions, no SKU number there, but YES!!! Right above it was a price marked $49.99! I had him bring me 3. They were stashed behind the upgrade counter (right behind the Zip disk display). I stowed them in my cart, and casually RAN to the checkout. Amazing, no manager types even looked interested. I almost fainted when the checkout girl pulled out all 3 onto her counter to scan them. Nobody even looked. No stickers on them, no TOS in sight. Didn't scan at first, but when they did it was $199. Thank heavens for the price on the display. She had to go look at it, then had a stock guy look it up, and it showed $49.99. I payed cash, then boogied. I was so jazzed. Sheer greed forced me to hit the nearest ATM and get enough for one more. All the people were in place, I knew it would be a cinch, and it was. "HaHa, my silly sister just called my cel and said she wanted one too!" <cheesy grin>. Two round trips, total 6 hours drive time, and $300 cash + tax and I now have 6 of them. If you are in the area, I suggest the SLC store, but they couldn't fit much more than 2 more in the space behind the counter. I must not be the only one who found this store a cinch...

el toozero "L20", that is a lie! I went to the San Bernardino, CA store and they are back by the tech counter, all with a TOS attached and the "sticker". They wouldn't let me out for nothing. THEY DO NOT SCAN AT ALL, manager comes over because it's a problem. They fixed it on their computer TO NOT SCAN! Tried the gift excuse, no luck. You are wishing. If it was true you would have gotten them all anyway. I won't bother with a 2 hour trip there because you lie! Don't make up stories because some of us have to drive many hours to get to the store!

First of all where the hell is this "add" you guys keep talking about on the compusa website? This is www.compusa.com we're talking about right?

I've checked "hot deals", searching, and various other things and have come up with nadda! Searching for websurfer returns nothing, searching for surfer comes up with some modem.

A quick call to the store, I guess checking for pricing and availability, phone tree option, now put you through to some central office thingy. Anyway they say it's $199.

Everyone at my local store, Boise ID., says it's $199...even when staring at that damn $49.99 sign...no mention of any TOS but where the hell's the ADD!!!! I might be able to get one if I can get a copy of that thing!!

Anyone got a link, product ID number, or compusa stock number? ANYTHING?!?!!?

Thanks,

Gary
