Internet Appliance Newbie questions

I am new to the IA scene, I have been looking for something cheap that I can hack for use as a set top box for use on my home network. I am running a TCP/IP network with a Win2k Server as a PDC and Internet Proxy wia a cable modem.

I would like to find something that runs Win2k or ME.

After searching around it appears that the websurfer fits the bill.

Should I hold out for a Websurfer Pro? is it much better than the Websurfer? Or is the Pro too rare?

Is there a better set top box solution excluding the x-box.... :)

Thanks.

This all depends on your definition of a set top box. If you want to play DVDs or Divx movies the websurfer won't do it. If you just want to surf the net, that will work, but surfing the net on the TV is definitely not recommended. A TV makes a terrible monitor for displaying text.
Let me know what you plan to do and I can give a better answer.

Hi,
Thanks for The response. I was originally just looing to surf the web, I need something around the house that I have conveinent net access with that wasn't a "computer". I forgot about maybe doing DVD's what would you recommend if I want to do DVD's??

I guess if I want conveinece should look at picking up a epod? It looks like with a wirless card I could just pick it up and go.

Thanks

I have yet to find something short of a laptop that will play DVDs and surf the net well. Like I said the TV is pretty bad for web surfing. Any sites with small fonts and your out of luck. If you get an internet appliance with a built in flat screen chances are that it will be DSTN. This means that it will not do motion very well at all, movies and fast action games are pretty much out. For websurfing and word processing though, they work great. I use an Iopener in my car for mp3 playing and gps mapping. I use my 2 websurfers as a router for my cable modem and a webserver. I am still looking for the best set top box. Currently I use a bookpc, which is basically a full PC in a small case. It works well, but the TV out leaves something to be desired.
I would suggest reading through this board as much as you can, and get a good feel for the different net appliances available. If you like to tinker with electronics then a net appliance is for you. If you don't, I would suggest looking for a nice cheap laptop. I have sunk at least $500 and countless hours into my iopener.

Good luck with your search,

Forgot to mention that http://www.tigerdirect.com is selling the msn companion for $180. It won't play DVD's, but would surf the web and is definitely a nonPC.
