Thanks for the tip.

I printed out the web page and was the first one to get a 49.99 Websurfer Pro at the Totem Lake CompUSA in WA.

The manager looked pretty upset about selling it, but he said he would honor the price. I didn't have to pay for any subscription service.

Happy hacking!

I just picked up 2 websurfer pros for the $49 price at my local compusa.Cash and carry, baby. Now I won't feel so bad about soldering on my board as when they were $200.

just ran into an oddball issue, ide would drop interrupts if you have APM enabled in 2.3.99-pre5-pre6.1-ac1

Check out the main page, got a pic of the "sale" sign that was put up inside the store.
http://www.linux-hacker.net/

Someone spent some time making & printing the sign and sending them to the stores, so it's not a error.

Codeman figured out how to enable the external mouse & keyboard connectors, see the new thread I posted.

You never know where they may be! I found 3 units sitting (hidden?) near the back of the store, none were up front. Got a pic of them, look at the bottom part of:

isn't the deal only with the contract? how do you get away without the contract?

I think it's like the armed forces don't ask don't tell policy.

If you don't ask, they won't tell you.

I paid cash, HINT HINT, BIG HINT.

Run, don't walk to your local store before they all go the way of the I-Opener.

The web page says it's a in store only sale.

I just bought one from my CompUSA - half hour ago. The TOS is stuck to the box in a plastic bag, with a big "IMPORTANT" sticker pointing to it. I helped the sales associate locate the UPC and he did not seem to notice the "IMPORTANT" part. No mention of signing anything other than my VISA stub. The paperwork in the bag has an Activation Code, Installation Diagram and the Terms & Conditions form that I was supposed to sign at CompUSA. Looks like I got away with it. The fact that I paid with my credit card is a bit worrying, but I don't see what right CompUSA has disclosing this information to Websurfer/Innovator/EarthLink. Any comments on this?

OK, so how do I dial my own ISP with this new toy? It'll be nice to surf the web on a 27" screen!

It seems you were pretty damn lucky that person just glazed over that big IMPORTANT sign and a plastic bag sticking out the side of the box. I highly doubt it'd work at my Compusa.. but what if I was buying the thing for my mom as a present and didn't want the earthlink account right away? Wouldn't that be a "valid" reason not to sign it?

I just got 2! Comp USA in Princeton, NJ. They still have the damn demo I-Opener! (The guy tried to sell me on one of those instead of the web surfer pro! But they still don't have any in stock. I tried to get them to sell me the demo saying "Since you don't have any what good is the demo?" but they wouldn't have it). Anyway, it took a little, but I had the print out of the search result from compusa.com, and I managed to get the sales drone to drop the price ... then I went to go see if I could get two, and they balked... Crap! But, the drone called the manager again, and he agreed, although he didn't look happy, saying their cost was around $170. They have a bunch, so if you are in the area, get there quickly before they catch on! There was only a sign saying "Web Surfer Pro $199". Hahah, Got 2 for $105.98 ;).

We are hackers of net-appliances. You will be assimilated. You're technological distinctiveness will be added to our own. Resistance is futile.

P.S. Didn't have a big plastic bag, or anything about a TOS, but the box does have on it something that says "Websurfer requires monthly subscription service". I hid that part with my hand ;).

I went to 2 stores in the Atlanta Georgia area, and they would not let me get it without signing up for the service.

Anyone want to sell me one? I really want one.

Well, I wasn't so lucky today....

went to CUSA and tried to buy one. It rang up at $211 ($199+tax). I said that the sign said $49.99 and the girl went to the back to check. She came back saying that if I signed the form that they would sell it to me for $49. The contract requires 2 years at $24.95/ mo or a $200 fee if you terminate early. I left it there as I would rather have an io for $99.

I did not have the printout with me then, but I'm going to go back. They had 8-10 sitting under the io demo. BTW, saying that the 'big' sign next to it said $49 didn't get them to change their story. Seems like they may have learned from the io story!

It amazes me at the variability in policy from store to store. Hopefully better luck next time.

I got mine here in Knoxville. I had a copy of the web page with me, and walked over to the customer service desk, presented the page and asked for one unit. After the young guy looked it up on his terminal, he became confused. The problem was that it was going to ring up at $199.95 rather than $49.95, and he said, "Wow, I can't believe the $199.95 could be right, because it shows that we're paying way less than that for them." At that point he called over a slightly older young fellow -- Doug -- who looked it over, shrugged, and said, "I'll go get one for you." After Doug retrieved the unit, he noticed the plastic bag labeled "IMPORTANT" on the side, opened it up, and asked me to sign the contract. I said in an assertive yet slightly apologetic tone, "Doug, no, I can't sign that, no offense. This is a gift for Dad, and I'm not going to sign something committing me to buying his internet service. Dad will sign up for service, or else the box will be useless, but I can't sign that." Doug's answer was, "Oh, ok, I don't care. We've had these for months at $49, and suddenly this morning she came and stuck these on the boxes. Whatever." At that point, I paid the $49 and completed the transaction. That was the end of my adventure. My feeling is that CompUSA has a responsibility to honor an advertised price; what they really need to do is changed that darned price on the web site.

I got mine in Lexington, KY. It was the last one on the floor, but there have been more in teh back. Picked it up, *accidentally* dropped the pink TOS sheet before I got to the register, and walked out with a new Websurfer. I paid with a credit card, as I'm not afraid of them charging me for service.

I recentley attempted to purchase one of these critters in bellevue Washington, where the sales girl read the earthlink sticker, produced the form and asked me to fill it out, I refused using the gift excuse and professing that I would simply send it in later.. she insisted and then went on to fetch the assistent and then the "offical" manager..(due to the fact that there is no return address on the form) who informed me that the box read "before leaving store" and that if I wanted it I had to go to there little realtime web terminal and complete a earthlink registration... I refused again sighting the gift excuse and reminding them all that the unit was useless without the service (I am supposed to be a dumb customer remember) the manager shrugged said "sorry" and let me walk... despite further protest... I am lets say a little pissed... but I am off for another attempt tomorrow at a different store.. not totemlake though beans screwed that one for me

Bought 3 from CompUSA in Warwick, RI just a few minutes ago.

One from behind the counter no stickers at all.

Two were on the $49.99 display. They had stickers on the boxes that said $49.99
with Paid Internet (or something to that effect) They had plastic bags on the side
but they were empty. Go fig.

The computer said they were $199 but the Customer Service desk quite happily
reduced the price to $49.99 (and they had said they had done the same thing for
one last night) Apparently, they stocked 5 and then they just got 20 more
but I cannot verify that.

No longer listed on the compusa website (see other thread). I searched for the sku number, the name websurfer, and innovator.. all to no avail. (yesterday you could just do quick search for websurfer and it came up) Anyone here that works for compusa hear anything yet? If they removed it due to us... I have to give them credit for being one of the quickest corporations I've ever heard of.

I still wanted to get one when the stores opened this morning, but without the site to back up my claims... I doubt I will be seeing one for $49.

Does anyone have a saved copy of that page or a screencapture (something for us to print out to take in)? Thanks in advance.

I have a saved copy of the page that shows it available in the stores in my area, with the name, sku, and price. I also have a printed copy of the page with the price/sku, the page you're really looking for. I can scan that. Post your email address here or email me at erickotz@my-deja.com requesting one or both and I'll send it to you.

ARGH! I went to the one here in Tulsa at lunch. They had two on the shelf, no prices, signs, bags, nothing... Had a worker check the price at their inventory computer and he confirmed $49.99. Took the two up front, and the register rings it up as $149.99! The gal called over her manager and they were both very adamant that these were only to be sold at $149... She even said they'd "had a lecture about these this morning". Maybe someone else will have better luck. :(

Doh!
I went to the CompUSA here in Orem, Utah and they had wised up by the time I got there.
We were walking with one to the cash register when an employee walked up to us and took it away because they were out of forms. Then they took the remaining ones off the shelves.

Went to 2 CUSAs today after being turned down yesterday. In one of the stores where there had been several sitting under a demo with the price $49 and an iopener, the sign was down, the price over the demo was $199 and there were none on the shelf. In another CUSA, I had to get one from behind the upgrade counter and when the price rung up $199 I presented a copy of the web page with the $49 price. I was told that the price had changed 4 hours earlier and the clerk seemed to be holding a memo concerning something with them. The manager was rude, uncaring and walked away after a few seconds of conversation.

CUSA stinks....anyone thought of levying the blast against them that was sent to NPLI for changing the rules in mid-stream?

Do we have any recourse?
