New MessageOther "WebTV"-type hacks (modified 0 times) NoName
Does anyone know if the other webtv type products can be hacked?

After missing out on both the i-openner, and now the websurfer, I went to see what's at circuit city. Some of the Webtv products advertised have onboard 1.0 GB Harddrive (store model for $78!). Wasn't sure if it's hackable or not though.

Anyone got one or know someone who has? Interested to find out the components inside.
BIOS/IDE connector etc...

I bought an I-opener and a WebSurfer. Since both were meant for completely different uses than what the hacker community is using them for it got me thinking "What other common appliance around the house is really a PC in disguise".

So, I started opening up every electronic component in my house looking for an IDE header. There is no computer in a cable set top box. There is no computer in a stereo transceiever. There is no computer in a TV. There is no computer in an ice maker, toaster oven or refrigerator.

Today I am going to Circuit City to replace all of the above said items due to electrical damage. So, it really was a good deal for Circuit City to sell me that $99 I-opener.

webtv's are windowsCE ... and they generally dont have usb ports..
even if you are able to override the default os, its likly not an intel cpu in the case anyhow.. no software you find will work for it.

Linux supports all the chips that wince supports. So you can recompile apps and get them working on the webtv. Whether it's worth all the effort is debatable.

Sony outlet store here, Kenosha Wis, has a stack of WebTV units for $29.99 including the RF keyboard.

Kits contains, Web TV classic INT-W250 base unit, Video/audio patch cord, dual IR blaster cable, 4ft svideo cable, 4ft RF cable, and a remote controller TV/WEB.

Inputs/Outputs
Serial
Parallel
Svideo in/out
Composite in/out
RF/in/out
Mic In
56K modem

WebTV unit is unusable without service. Rumore was that the WebTV keyboard could be used to put text into a sony CD changer. I was hoping to use as a TV tuner. No such luck on either.

Is there a way to use these things w/o monthy service?
