How about a link to this wonderful better deal? I may have given $200 for the websurfer pro already, but if I found a more suitable box I wouldn't cry about another $200.

http://www.acnt.com has them for $160 plus about $25 shipping (the Book PC, Keyboard, Mouse, and Speakers
come in one box weighing about 30 pounds). Mine works great. I bought a 64MB DIMM from ACNT and
a Celeron 500 PPGA from Computer Super Sales for $83.99, and slapped in a 10GB IBM HD I already
had available.

Here's the ad right off the ACNT page:

BOOK PC (BAREBONE) INTEL 810 CHIPSET M/B SUPPORTS ~CELERON 500 PPGA BUILT-IN SOUND AND VIDEO
CD-ROM KB MOUSE SPEAKERS (HDD, CPU, MEMORY NOT INCLUDED) $159.99

It is a better deal, if you're trying to build a computer.
Personally, I'm warping my websurfer into an mp3 player/fm tuner for my truck.
I'll let you know what my total cost was when I'm finished.

Picked up 3 WebSurfers today at CompUSA for a grand total of 90 bucks and some
odd cents today. How? My XYZ company discount (nope, not C-USA). The other
machine has more features but its hard to beat $28 + tax each. :) One for me, one for
a buddy and one for may dad. I was going to walk out with one $199 machine to fart
with and thought I'd ask if there was a discount for me. My jaw dropped! After not getting
an Iopener I feel happy now. Makes me wonder what the hell C-USA gets them for.

Some simple things I found out.

del key at boot brings up bios. (no brainer) esc 4 4 4 4, brings up "Missing Operating
System" The upper left key is the esc key as expected. Real usefull. :)

Looks like the "no load" area for the ethernet is for a clasic AMD ISA or
PCI (more likley) Net family chip. Should be able to populate it if I had another board
to nab them from. Lot of work but I have the equipment. The audio in/out seems to be
missing just the connectors and an inductors.

I think first thing is to put down an IDE
connector and resistor packs.

Off to playing.

I know this isn't a "steal of a deal", but check out this:

http://www.ibuypower.com/product-pc/pocket-epc.htm

The Espresso Pocket PC... talk about form factor! This thing is the size of an external zip drive! You do have to provide your own display, and the price is a little prohibitive ($899 for the base model) but who else do you know that has a full-fledged Celeron computer in a case that small???

Check it out!

I have a USB FM tuner made by D-Link, $29.99 at CompUSA. I should know if it works tonight.
One thing I have to figure out is how to manage audio in. The tuner is supposed to plug into your sound card's line-in port, which the ws pro doesn't have.

Has Book PC enough room to accomodate a normal (I guess 3.5 inch) hard drive ?

Does it have a TV-out like websurfer ?

Could not find these tech details on www.acnt.com

Can anyone tell me if the book pc has a quiet power supply? I'm looking for a very quiet system.

FYI bookpc, no TV out no wireless keyboard. People are buying the WSP for the gimmick and hackability. bookpc are for pussys.

2 type of people hangs out on this message board. WSP owner and people who want one but is too cheap to shell out $200 and wish they have something better... just my 2 cents.

Look here for the specs on the Book PC.

Yes it does have TVOut.
Yes it has an internal 3.5" HD bay.

As long as the Websurfer is selling for 3 and 4 times its original price,
the Book PC *is* a better deal, just not as much fun to hack since it
already has most of the capabilities anyone would want and is ultimately
capable of higher performance than the Websurfer. I'd rather have had a
Websurfer for the fun of making it do what I want, but I'm not about to
pay exhorbitant rates just so I can have the same fun someone else had
for $50. (I just watched the end of one of the eBay auctions end, and
the seller got $150 for a virgin Websurfer. That's better than the $200
+ it was before, but still higher than the $100 I'm willing to pay).

http://www.cmicomputer.com/special/bookpc.htm

the latter looks good.$279 8gb hdd, wireless kbd, 32mb ram, DVD. just needs a cpu. Their prices w/ cpu are on crack though. grab a cpu elsewhere for $70-100

I just wonder how crappy the 3d is on it. Would be nice to quake on the main tv.
It would truly kick ass if I could put another 10bt nic in it to use as a router.

New MessageRE:Book PC is still a better deal (modified 0 times) PussyPro
Book PC destroys the Websurfer Pro. Lets get real, you get a full pc for less. The websurfer pro is one of the lamest hacks around. The I-Opener was an awesome and worthwhile hack in that it you got a hell of alot more out of the hack than you put into it. Lets see you use a websurfer pro as a GPS for your car. Its not gonna happen. Surely the TV out isn't the websurfer's big selling point. For 30 dollars I picked up a usb TV out adapter, I wonder how much it would cost to get a nice thin LCD screen for the WSP.

If I was gonna spend 200 dollars on a wannabe computer I'd go with the book PC. If I wanted a toy that I could hack I'd go with the I-Opener. The Websurfer Pro is worth the $50 it was being offered at but at $200 only a loon would buy it.

Build your own is better! I got a MB, some RAM and a tiwan case for way less! Plugged it in and WOW! It works! No BIOS flash, no torx screws, no epoxy...

WAIT! That wasn't fun at all!!!!

Screw it, now I have just another stupid PC like the rest of the lame lusers out there. I got a book PC a few days before, but that wasn't fun at all (except opening the box, wow wee!) so I thought building my own would be fun.

DAMN! I should have had some REAL fun!

I wonder if that demo unit at comp USA is still there?

05-09-2000 20:43:06

New MessageRE:Book PC is still a better deal (modified 0 times) you fags
to all you fag book pc idiots who are bitter that you couldn't get one of these for 50 bucks.

Did you notice that the websurfer had little or no attention before the $50 price thing???

cant you see than that all of us bought this for $50. who gives a damn if you think the BPC is a better deal than a $200 WS. thats odvious. thats why we didn't pay that for them, sorry you missed the deal or weren't lucky enough to get one for $50. you dont have to gripe about it forever.
If you want a damn book PC than go get one. no one here in their right mind is paying $200 for the WS. The comp usa near me sold out the next day after the deal was discovered, now there is 20 of them in stock because no one will pay that for them.
if you think about your argument it is pretty damn stupid and doesn't really have much of a basis.

Dont you feel like the stupid person that you are

Actually You Fag (that is the name you chose isn't it?),
You might want to read these posts a little better before you attempt to flame someone. If you had you would have noticed that you're agreeing with one of the people you're trying to flame (I'm guessing its you feeling pretty stupid now) I already said that the WSP was worth the 50 dollars it was being offered at but at anything more its just a rip off. I bought 2 when they were at 50, had my fun for the first day or so then moved on. My original post was being directed towards the people (mostly eBayers I'd assume) that are actually trying to convince others that the WSP are worth the 200+ dollars some are going for. Obviously you don't think they are as you've already said in your post. What I said was If I was going to spend 200+ on a wannabe computer I'd go with the Book PC. Value wise, the Book PC gives you a much better deal with much more options. Some people say its ok to pay a little more for the fun of the hack. I'd agree with that to a point. The WSP's hack doesn't warrant an additional $150 to its $50 base price.

Speaking of the bookpc, does anyone know what audio and video chipsets are on these? I would like to get one and use Linux on it and I need to know if everything is supported. I'd also like to know for audio/video quality reasons.

They use the Intel 810 (i810) chipset -
integrated video & sound. Kinda like a
MediaGX on steroids. :>

Anyway - I think there is *some* support -
it's still kinda new though. That's about
all I know off the top of my head. :> I've
been trying to avoid the i810 based boards
(too much integration), but for a cheap "single purpose" PC or a fun toy it should be OK.

anyone know of something like this but with any pci or agp slots? i like the tiny form factor, but would need some means of expansion. if they had this with an agp or pci slot, i would buy it in a second. any ideas?

pete,

Do a search on the Soyo LI-7000 which has 2 PCI slots and has a similar
form factor to the book PC. SoyoUSA has the skinny on it, and I recall
seeing a retail site (SpecialtyTech or some such) selling it barebones
for $302.

Ok. I have both a hacked WSP and a book pc. I picked up the wsp from comp-usa for 21.99, including tax, because the dude didn't have the thing in the computer, so I got it for a mere 22 bucks. I put a 4GB hard drive, ethernet card, and an external cd-rom, not hooked up by the parallel port, but the ide connector physically comming out of a slot in my system to the cdrom. I must say it done wonders for the system with Windows 95 and 98, but I still prefer my book PC. It's a celery 533 that I won offa ebay for 250 bucks including shipping. It has all the stuff needed, and I have it hooked up to my Tv through s-video, and I have my cable modem hooked up through the RJ45 connector. I prefer the book Pc, but since I managed to make a 105 buck computer just outta #### lying around my house, it's a great second computer, especially if you want to play porn movies on it and pleasure yourself.
