Idea: home-built WebSurfer-type PC

New MessageIdea: home-built WebSurfer-type PC (modified 0 times) Datoyminaytah
I'll bet with a little searching one could find a PC chassis about the form factor of a WebSurfer that would hold a small ATX or micro-ATX motherboard. If not, there are probably plenty of generic project boxes that would work with the right holes drilled. What about ISA/PCI/AGP adapters to mount cards at right angles to the slot on the MB? I'll bet they exist, and again, if not, they should be fairly simple to build.

I was thinking about looking for a second WebSurfer, but now, I may look into building a similar device around a Celeron or similar processor, and hopefully use some of the hardware I have lying around after upgrading my regular PC.

You probably want a flex ATX chassis. The flex ATX form factor is a subset of micro ATX and I know that manufacturers like ASUS, Chaintech, DFI and some others make boards and risers which would allow you to mount PCI cards parallel to the motherboard. They are terribly hard to find on the market, however. (I've been trying to scrape together parts for a cheap FreeBSD box since February.)

Good luck.

Check out the Book PC. Here's a few links from my bookmarks
to start you off:

http://www.directron.com/bookpc.html
http://www.djscomputers.com/systems.htm
http://www.ecs.com.tw/

The very last link is the site I bought my Book PC from for
$160.00, and it has been working well, so far. I put a
Celeron 500 in it, plus a 64MB DIMM and a 10GB hard drive
I already had here at home. When you select whatever you
want, be sure it has all the goodies, particularly the
multiple video output choices (VGA, S-Video & Composite),
built-in modem, built-in NIC, etc.

Grumpy.

Interesting- From the links you provided, I found some more information on the Note PC check out http://www.pcware.com/notepcframe1.htm

This is also on http://www.pcchips.com . Apparently this product has been tuned for running linux and even has 8MB of flash ROM for loading a lightweight kernel before booting off of the LAN! It's pre-hacked!

excerpt:
The NotePC has a built-in 8MB Flash ROM card that provides a minimum Linux OS solution for diskless applications. This enables access to the Internet and sending or viewing e-mail without a harddisk or CD-ROM drive in the system. You can also access software from a network and run it.

I haven't been able to find a sales web site for this product. anybody know of one?
