I installed a Quantum Bigfoot internal drive in my Surfer today. The drive is only about 3/4" thick. I mounted it over the power supply using a home-made "C" shaped bracket , the bottom leg is riveted under the power supply. The front edge of the drive rests on a small wooden block which is against the inside front of the case.Hard to explain, but its a solid, perfect fit. I've used several of these Bigfoot drives over the years.....they run very cool. The case closes without any force...there is about 1'8" clearance all around. Since this setup is over the ram chip, you cannot use one much taller than stock. My PNY 64meg chip is a good fit.

That's exactly what i did exept I used 2 U shaped risers from the MB mount screw and empty mount hole in front of the PS, and an l bracket off the fron tof the case. I had to invert the PS switch and now I have about 2mm below and above the drive to any other components.
My only concern is reduced airflow around the PS heat sinks.

There is enough room between the power-switch and the power supply to mount a small fan on the botton of the case. Of course you'll have to cut a hole in the bottom of the case for the air intake. I used an automotive body shop device called a nibbler. You drill one hole and use the nibbler to cut the rest of the hole. These are small hand tools...work neat. This draws cooler air from the underside and does not make much noise. You could rig a channel to direct the flow over the power supply.

I just mounted a 486 cpu fan along the back behind the power supply powered by nearby connector. It pulls air in from behind the unit and blows between the drive and PS. It's a little noisy so I think I'll "nibble" at the back of the case.
