Linux 2.3.99.x, NFS, and mpg123

New MessageLinux 2.3.99.x, NFS, and mpg123 (modified 0 times) Zonyl
Didnt see this mentioned so I thought I would post some of my findings.

Linux 2.3.99.x, NFS, Linksys 10/100 USB nic, mpg123, and unmodified hardware on the WS, is not fast enough to play mp3's (without skip) over NFS. It is fine playing mp3's locally from a hard drive but the extra burden of USB puts the CPU at 180Mhz over the top.

Is there a faster mp3 player or should I just overclock the CPU? Im a little hesitant to OC the cpu, cause I dont want to stick any more money into this with a better fan. (used up all of my junk fans on other projects already ;) ) Has there been any issues with 266Mhz and the stock fan / heatsink?

USB is a CPU hog, as you say. I would look there first. Other threads say that replacing the USB network card with an ISA or PCI network card fixes the skipping.

I hooked up my WS in the living room to the cell phone modem so I can call the other room so I can send MP3's to my stereo that I will run wires back to my living room, then have another WS take the audio IN and equalize it by sending packets over my network to my main $2000 computer (tying that up so I can't use it for anything else) then sending packets back over the internet to my friend in vancover so he can watch the little graph bars, it comes back to my work computer at the office and then is sent via satellite back to the house where my dish network box picks it up and decodes the mpg audio and it comes out my mono TV speaker.

Can you tell me why it skips? It also sounds bad. Anyone know why?

Get a $100 15gb hard drive and stick it in the WS, transfer the files and get a life! You are spending too much time trying to do stuff that makes no sense.

Have you put any more RAM into the machine? It might help since the OS won't be thrashing around during decompression.

Damn:
Its called client/server... $53 workstation's that take advantage of a Athlon 650, 512Mb memory with a 36gig RAID 5. Just $100 you say for 15gig, well multiply that times 6 machines, include IDE controllers, time to install, modify cases (you can do the math I'm sure). Would rather upgrade the server (and benefit all workstations) with that money, then throw it away so I can duplicate my apps and mp3's on every machine.

My point: $53 - someone might justify for a pc in every room. $190 - that would be a hard sell for more than 1.

"...to my main $2000 computer (tying that up so I can't use it for anything else)..." hmm. Must be a windows user.

Ledfoot:
Thanks for the advice, but my setup has no swap file. I dont expect to exceed the 16Mb of ram with the applications I am running.
