On-board LAN and other networking... (modified 0 times)
El Barto
OK, I don't have a WebSurfer, but I am hoping to get one (if anyone wants to sell one for $100 or best offer, email me at elbart0@home.com) as soon as possible...I'm losing sleep over these things. Anyhow, it has onboard LAN? Has anyone gotten this to work? And what has to be done to get it working? Also...very stupid question...is there any way to network via USB? Hooking a USB cable from one computer to the Websurfer? I've never dealt with USB before...don't chop my head off hax0rs.

No the onboard LAN will not work without the Intel Chip that is needed (Why would you want it when you can get a 10/100 Netgear PCI for 15.99?)
Yes you can network via but it is *very flaky*, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
Hope this helps

I want to put on the on board LAN interface because I need two NICs. I guess I could wedge two in the slots (1 ISA and 1 PCI).
It will replace a larger PC setup for my DSL Gateway/Firewall system.

Inter does sell a NIC with two interfaces on it. If you want to configure the websurfer linux but into a cool looking firewall box.

Is that really Inter or Intel?
Thanks for the lead.

Solder Boy
You can put a PIC NIC and an ISA NIC together in the WSP. If the connectors don't fit together, you can de-solder one of them and put it into the MB RG45 location and run the signal wires from the NIC car to it.

You can run the PCI and ISA slots at the same time? Wooohoo!

Wait, you guys are talking about putting in ISA and PCI cards.
How is this possible? I don't see any ISA or PCI slots on the board.. ?
Also, is there any links on how to solder on a ethernet plug?
thank you, charles

Look on the riser card! there is a shared ISA/PCI that can be used for 2 cards. These guys are trying to make a quick firewall for their networks and I don't blame them. I would have done this too but I'd rather beef up my entertanment system.
