WS in a car
Has anyone mounted a WS in a car yet?

New MessageWS in a car (modified 0 times) mynnyme
Hi,
Has anybody successfully managed to install a WS in a car? I understand a invertor is needed to get the needed -12V, success anyone?
Thanks.

I have not tested mine successfully yet; however, I will be this afternoon. Basically get an inverter and away you go. Unfortunately, I'm not expecting much since cars aren't the best power sources for computers.... It should work though.

Please let me know what you find. Theoretically, the car battery should act like a huge condensator to filter out a lot of noise from the circuit. On the other hand, a bad alternator can ruin your day. One time something happened to my alternator (never figured exactly what), and the voltage in the car circuit was alternating at like +11+-3 V, I could see the headlights fliker at night. The WS would probably not be happy about that.

I plan to pull out the AC-dc power supply
in one of my units. Replace it with a DC-DC supply with 5V @ 5A, +12 @ 2.5A and -12 @ 200mA. I have the part but just need to get it together. I plan to start the PCB design tonight.

I have a LCD plugin for Winamp as well as
a IR to serial port plugin. I could use the
normal IR Keyboard however.

Greg - where did you buy that DC-DC power supply, and how much was it?

Im making the supply based on the following site. The 5v section will be the same but the rest I may redesign.

In response to the question about car installation......

Phase 1 is currently working in the car! Its not pretty, but it works.(i.e. wires hanging everywhere, etc.) This weekend, is Phase 2(see below)

The websurfer is running DOS and playing MP3's fine. It is booting DOS from the HD and it boots in 9 seconds. (NOTE : while playing mp3's in DOS, the CPU utilization hangs around 30-40% so alls good.) I was going to boot off of the DOC but I decided not to spend the effort since 9 seconds is fine with me I ran it for 24 hours straight with no lock ups or freezes of anykind(which is very encouraging considering I read about people having problems with lockups... That's windows for ya!) However, I am concerned if the machine can withstand continuous car abuse. (i.e. Temperature extremes, bumps, crappy power, etc.) Bottom line though is that I don't care too much since I've only put in about $100 into this project so it'll be fun regardless....(furthermore, if it can't handle the car, I'll convert it into a component MP3 player for my stereo system.) BTW, I will be making a web page with pics of car and mods if anyone is interested to see what it looks like when I'm done. I should have phase II done this Sunday.

Phase 1 car configuration (currently complete)
------
- Websurfer w/ following mods :
- Vanilla SIIG ISA IDE controller its like model #11xx ($24.97 @ Best Buy) Boots HD fine with DOC in the
machine.
- 1 GB 3.5" HD - running DOS & MPXPLAY & lots of MP3's.
- Spliced Power Cable + extra fans.
- Generic Inverter
- Generic RF Modulator to run line outs to factor stereo.
- Standard IR Keyboard
!- Wires laying everywhere (WHAT a mess!)

Phase 2 car configuration (should be this weekend.)
------
- Websurfer w/ following mods :
- Vanilla SIIG ISA IDE controller its like model #11xx ($24.97 @ Best Buy) Boots HD fine with DOC in the
machine.
- 2 GB 2.5" Laptop HD - running DOS & MPXPLAY & lots of MP3's.
- Spliced Power Cable + extra fans.
- Generic Inverter
- Generic RF Modulator to run line outs to factor stereo.
- Replace factory keyboard w/ handheld learning remote for custom control.
!-Taking apart car interior to run wires correctly. Mounting the unit in the trunk and wiring the status lights and IR interface somewhere near the dash area. (I'll probably put it in some type of small enclosure that looks nice)

Phase 3 (hopefully in 2 weeks, depending on my amount of free time.)
--------
Same as Phase 1 & 2 with addition of LCD display on the dash to display current song, etc.

No way with an SVGA CRT in a car. Maybe a VGA LCD or something but you have to be good. I plan on putting a composite video LCD in mine but I'm not putting my WS in my car, having too much fun right now playing You Don't Know Jack in my living room. I want to put in a K6 or celeron in my Ford Explorer.

Hi all,

Phase 2 is complete! Everything is running good. I dropped in the 5GB IBM laptop drive and away it goes. I got the unit tucked in the trunk real nice like and all the wiring is hidden. There are no visual indications that the interior has been messed with. I must thank Pontiac for making a car easy to run wiring in! (My '98 GTP has an access panel in the back seat that made it real easy to run wiring.) I have pictures from the digital camera, but I probably won't setup a page until next week since I'm real busy this weekend.

On another note, the websurfer/mp3 device is great for parties!!!! I took it to my friends graduation party and hooked it up to the TV and let people be their own DJ. Great way to pick up chicks

Tested out my MP3 player this last week while driving from Sacramento to LA (Disneyland thing). Works just fine, no problems noted. Im running win98 with winamp 2.5e. UIR plugin and hardware moded from a Packard Hell fastmedia remote. LCD plugin w/20x4 LED backlite display. Cheap ass inverter (thanx Ecanem) for the DC to AC method. I havnt worked on the DC to DC yet but I have a 5V 8A Linear Tech demo board for 8v to 30v DC in. I will try out soon. The inverter originaly cause noise in the audio. Also a ground differential between the chassis of the WS and the car gave me a buzz when I completed the circuit. :) If fixed that by connecting the AC cord gnd (ie WS chassis) to the negative side of the DC inverter input. Fix it up nice!!! I couldnt believe that the gnd lug on the AC socket in the inverter went nowhere. Used the Cassette addaptor on the 1/8" stereo jack.

Just need to work on the boot time. Im going to look at DOS for the MP3 player. MPX,somthing like that. As long as it supports IR and LCDs.

hi,

in response to your looking for a quicker boot.....

I run DOS and mpxplay with a ibm 5.1gb laptop drive. It takes 9seconds for me to get music playing, which isn't terrible. If I could find a way to skip the POST I could probably speed that up significantly.

Two questions:

1. Where can I get a good plugin for winamp to support LCD plugins?

2. Where can I get a IR remote thats good.

Thanks,

You guys that are using an IR remote with that UIR plugin for winamp, are you installing a secondary IR board, or has someone managed to get the WSP's IR controller to work? I have zip experiance with IR controllers and the like, so I apologize for any ignorance. Heh.
