If the drive is set to master the bios doesn't see it at all.

If the drive is set to slave it shows up as
D: only.

In both cases having the flash disk in or out made no difference.

found it. being a western digital drive I had to remove the master/slave jumpers entirely when it's a single drive. now it boots up as C:
