LTSP DoC Image Package
Discussion of the websurfer-ltsp package

The first version of my LTSP package for the websurfer pro is availabe at:

http://www.ltsp.org/contrib/index.html

It contains a DoC image (and the source for the DoC image) that is setup to connect to an LTSP server. It should save you a lot of time if all you want is to get your websurfer up an running as a linux thin client.

I'm looking for feedback on this, so give it a go.

Post comments, suggestions, etc on the package in this thread.

Enjoy.

Comments? Yeah, you are violating the GPL.

I have a distrib that I would like to distribute as well, but we cannot. Sorry.

Hrmm. Ok, I've asked the ltsp folks to pull the link.

It seems a bit odd that this is a no-no. I read the page you cited. It mentions a binary only driver violating the GPL. This apparently refers to a previous driver from M-Systems. So even if the new M-Systems patch is available as source, it is still verboten to distribute the kernel? Is this because the patch is not GPL'ed?

Well that sucks. I was just a couple hours late. I'd love an LTSP package for the WSP.

How can we properly distribute it? The only way I can think of is to distribute everything in the DoC image, minus the kernel, and then distribute a kernel .config and instructions for adding the (binary) flash driver. Then you have to explain how to add the kernel to the image, and.. sheeze, that's work.

Another idea is to boot the WSP like I do the iOpener.. a DoC with *only* (p)Lilo and a kernel. Then root is mounted NFS after bootp and the whole dance. It's not the same as the more self-sufficient LTSP, but it's close. That kernel wouldn't require the flash driver, since the flash is never mounted after boot. It does make it difficult to change the kernel after installation, though. :) Hmmmm....

Yah, violating the GPL is just as unethical as ... as ... taking advantage of a company that cant organize their resellers to get contracts signed. hmmm.

However, we did not violate any law or agreement or anything like that. The fact that the WSP was being sold for $50 wasnt our fault. Just the advertised price, and that ad never said anythign about a contract
